Should tanning salon patrons be charged a 10 percent federal tax?

“It’s similar to a cigarette tax and the federal government shouldn’t decide what is good or bad for people, so I think the tax is wrong.”

Photo of William Tramp

“Absolutely, because it’s bad for their health and if my taxes are going to help pay for them to get better, then they should be helping to pay too.”

Photo of Jane Mahoney

“Yes, because they know the harmful effects they can get from tanning and they should be willing to pay extra, and it’s for their own good.”

Photo of James Carder

“I do think so, because it’s using energy and you can just go outside and get a tan.”

CO2 tax is coming to a tax jurisdiction in your area soon. Blowhards will finally pay their fair share. Another regressive tax scheme like federal and state income taxes.

I can't really object much to a 'vanity tax'. I still really think pornography could be a tax 'cash cow'.....

There should be a new tax on anyone who says "there" when they should have said "their", anyone who says "whose", when they should have said "whom", dumbocrat when they should have said socialist, and right wing when they should have said right. New taxes are the new socialist order, right, I can expect them any day!

iamtired, in this Brave New World, punishing the descendants of the White Devils seems to be okay. Look at how "Let 'em go" Holder gave a nod and a wink to voter intimidation as long as it was aimed at the correct group.

Would this tax not be racist in its selective nature? By far, the single largest group of tanning salon patrons are caucasion. This tax would seem to unfairly target that segment of the population. Yes, I know there are some African-American, orientals, and hispanics that use tanning salons; but they are in the minority (pun not intended, but ironic).

In order to make this tax fair it would have to be a line-item on income tax form and everyone would need to pay whether they tan or not.

No tax on tanning and all bikinis are free to those ladies who pass muster. Autie, I looked for 2 hours yesterday in a proven location and did not find ONE stinking morel. Try again tomorrow.

"The reason I would tax it is because tanning is not a necessity."

Nonsense. They will tax whatever they can, necessity or otherwise, in order to maintain an ever-increasing level of spending until they finally (if unwittingly) collapse the society entirely.

Our becoming inured to any new tax scheme or proposal only makes us more willing sheep until the day when we accept that we don't really 'earn' anything - we're only the vassals of a all-powerful state.

If we could just tax the federal government every time a new tax is proposed....now that would put a stop to the madness! The most effective congress is the one that stays at home!

I think they should only tax the spray tans. Seriously.

She said, "There is no reason and the truth is plain to see." But I wandered through my playing cards and they would not let her be one of sixteen vestal virgins who were leaving for the coast and although my eyes were open wide they might have just as well been closed

And so it was that later as the mirror told his tale that her face, at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale.

I really dig that tune, But what the hell is a vestal virgin? Is it like being vested in your retirement fund? If so, leave me out. I've never had a job for longer than 2 weeks. It takes, like, a long time to get vested. Another question. The winner gets a pair of my underwear. Remember those Mexican jumping beans? What makes those things jump? Man, things like that keep a stoner like me busy for hours...

I tried tanning once, against my wiil. I was hangin' out at the gym, making time with the ladies, the ones that don't vomit when they smell my musky scent(phermones, baby, phermones), when suddenly these 2 buff roid-raging punks hoisted me up and took me to the tanning room. They ripped my clothes off, threw me in the tanning bed nekked, and sat on top of it. It got pretty warm. I was screaming. My short and curlies caught on fire, those guys were laughing hysterically. But then it started feeling kinda good. The little man turned crispy black and the jewels went from shiny side out to sunny side up to well done. I was rather enjoying myself. This pissed The Situation twins off really bad. They dragged me out of the bed and threw me in the women's locker room, which I enjoyed immensely. Cuz I'm the Tax Man. Yeeeeaaaah I'm the Tax Man.........

How many years did it take the Liberals to figure out the skin cancer increases were caused not by the ozone hole over Kennebunkport, but the tanning salons on every corner? duh.

As for the tax, don't we pay enough in taxes anyway? Why not repeal the income tax, go to a flat sales tax on all businesses and put all the accountants/tax attorneys/IRS agents out of business?

0

No issue with it.

But, I do not think the issue is whether or not tanning is healthy or not. The reason I would tax it is because tanning is not a necessity. The State and Feds need money. They have to raise taxes. I would rather have them tax crap like booze, cigarettes, tanning, boats, luxury cars as opposed to food, clothes, or increasing property taxes on my house and other items that people have to have........

This tax is racist. It will overwhelmingly affect caucasian people, and have a slim to no effect upon minorities. I knew Obama's preacher and wife were racist but appreantly so are his tax and economic advisors.

Ain't Saturday "Earth" day? I believe by law on is to fish/drink beer/grill meat as much as possible on that day. Saturday is National Cheeseball Day so throw one of those on the grill as well. Arbor Day is coming up...that day one uses real wood and not charcoal in their grill...

Wonder if the resturant shift manager (note to LJW: spell-check even here in the comments tells me "resturant" is spelled wrong) who supports a tax because tanning is bad for a person's health works at a health food restAurant? It'd be funny if he made that statement then went to work at a burger or pizza place.

Just curious, do tanning salons have customers sign agreements or waivers saying that they understand the health risk of tanning, etc.? I used to go tanning in high school for upcoming dances but don't remember. Just like cigarette packs have the surgeon general's warning on them I was wondering if tanning salons offer something like that.

No,it will lead to the outlawing of lying in the sun. This will be the only way to placate the powerful tanning lobby.

How about this? All lawyers, law makers and politicians should be charged a special "corruption tax", just because history has shown that , as a group, they are prone to corruption, above and beyond that of the average taxpayer. Also, let the church start paying taxes.

Absolutely not. America needs tax relief, not new and higher taxes.

0

Why are these things always two for and two against?

Huh? I count 3 vs. 1 (yes vs. no).

Anywho, the true mark of an idiot is that who fake tans. So, not so much a tanning tax as an idiot tax. That would be great!

I must say that my plan for getting rich is still to put a tanning salon just off campus from the sororities. I will build a covered, heated path so they still can come in the winter without getting themselves snowed on. But then I might make over $250k per year...that wouldn't be good for my taxes.

0

uh..yeah...what Roe says...and make it 15% if they are smoking and eating a big Mac in the tanning booth.

0

RoeDapple 4 years ago

Yeah, especially if they're smoking! (their hides), (or tobacco . . ) (Okay if they chew while in there, be interesting to watch them spit)

(Okay, grammar police, appropriate use of they're, their and there, but too many commas, and maybe, parenthesis, ya think? maybe?)
