Up. No doubt about it. One of my favorite movies ever.

Inglourious Basterds! It's a happy movie.

"Thumbsucker"

I did go to see "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" at a theater, but that was because they serve beer. While I enjoyed it, it was not the best movie I saw this summer.

Up or Ponyo... both good movies I saw with my kiddo.

The Hurt Locker

Kudos to those EOD guys in the AOR.

People still pay to go to that theater?

I enjoyed the Hangover. Stupid, but hilarious.

Star Trek I guess. I think the only other ones I watched were Wolverine Origins which was totally off and the Transformers sequel, which unlike the first I did not have the grace to watch in Mandarin in a movie theater in China, and so had to hear and understand the dialog. (shudder) Oh, and Harry Potter, which was awful.

Star Trek, the characters were right on, Wolverine, I adore the guy, Land of the Lost, Transformers, Harry Potter, GI Joe, Public Enemy, Johnny Depp is great.

Up was great. Kids loved it too. District 9 rocked, although I had to turn away many times. The Hangover was prob the best. So funny I laughed out loud so much. And, the best part is that the movie companies didn't ruin it for me with trailers. I went into that flick only knowing that the dudes woke up in Vegas with a tiger, a baby and a chicken in their room and missing the groom. Seeing how they got to that point was hysterical.

District 9 would have been my next choice for best flick this summer.

Lots of good movies this Summer:

  1. Star Trek
  2. Moon
  3. The Hangover
  4. Food, Inc.
  5. Away We Go
  6. Harry Potter
  7. Public Enemies
  8. Taking Of Pelham 123

I still haven't made it out to see 500 Days of Summer.

The best American film of the summer is also the best American film of the year so far: Inglorious Basterds. It's a masterpiece. The Hurt Locker is a relatively close 2nd. Up up was good, but not nearly as good a film as Wall-E. Star Trek was a fine popcorn movie. Ponyo is good, but I can't include it, because it technically came out last year. Outside of Watchmen, no other 2009 film really stands out to me.

toss up... either District 9 or The Hurt Locker.

Both great films in their own right.

Irish: "...Wolverine, I adore the guy..."

Why, thank you! I had no idea.

District 9 is by far the best movie and the sci-fi.

Close call between Star Trek and District 9.

I'll have to go with District 9 as it was the most original film I've seen in quite a while, even if it borrowed elements from some video games (quake, half life). The film really takes some sci-fi tropes and puts them on their ear.

Indeed, unless getting booted broke logrithmic's mind and forced him to the other side of the ideological spectrum.

He struck me as being too dumb and too crazy to make convincing satire (unless logrithmic Was satire, in which case he's a f'n genius)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

I watched it again a couple of weeks ago. Great film, and nobody asked about the best "new" movie I saw this summer.

Best new film would be the French masterpiece, "Les Nombreux Cousins Fous d'Autie" (The Many Crazy Cousins of Autie). It follows these nar-do-well, redneck cousins around the countryside in their Chevette as they get into one mishap after another. Good times.

maxcrabb (Anonymous) says… "Inglorious Star Trekking Hungover Basterds."

I might have paid to see that.

beatrice (Anonymous) says… "Best new film would be the French masterpiece, “Les Nombreux Cousins Fous d'Autie”"

I would have paid to see that, assuming it was both voice over and subtitled. My first language is English and so I still have difficulty with Kansanese.

logicsound: It's a tossup. The name doesn't sound nearly pretentious enough, at first blush.

I wonder what movie the kids watched at home today...

0

Jimo 3 years, 8 months ago

Surprisingly, Star Trek. As one critic said, the greatest prequel ever made.

Multi, You have it all wrong. LeaverDeaAsSlaef is a tower of a fellow as strong as an ox, of dark complexion, broad shouldered, with a long black beard and moustache. A natural rough humorist, who through unfortunate circumstances was recast into an awful brute. Out of personal revenge for the bloody injustice that befell him with the killing of kinsfolk and destruction of his property he became a freedom fighter of legendary standing.

Oh Multi, Rhea Pearlman? Now that is a hoot. Not even close, but a hoot. I like the description, however. I certainly don't shy away from confrontation, as you suggest.

Multi, As to Bea think Maude. That outspoken, politically liberal woman, embracing the tenets of women's liberation, always voting for Democratic Party candidates, strongly supporting legal abortion, and advocating for civil rights and racial and gender equality. Just as on her TV show, her overbearing and sometimes domineering personality often gets her into trouble when speaking out on these issues.

But we would not have her any other way.
