mojo's was the shizzle-nizzle!
however, I think I can tell you why they are no longer around….I used to love to call in my order about 20 minutes before every KU basketball game. then, i would roll down the street and scoop up my wings and chicken strips with the best sauces ever (whiskey a-go-go, phat elvis) …one day, I didn't get home soon enough, and I called during the first half-nobody answered the phone.
I kept re-calling, but nobody picked up the phone :( a few games later-this happened again. this time, I phoned, got the ring tone, and then set the phone down, and drove down myself to see 4 employees sitting on the counter-watching the game with the phone ringing, beside them.
'aren't you gonna answer that?' I asked. ” Naw man, we wouldn't be able to keep up with the demand during games-so we just ignore the phone on game nights.” so I gave him my order and left-happy to have my wings, chicken strips and the best sauces ever created (did I mention that?) well, finally-I ran into the owner and I hate to be a rat, but since I am in a similar situation, I would like to know about bad things my employees do when I am not around-so I sez: “hey man, your employees don't answer the phones during basketball games-and I thought you might like to know.” he replied “yeah, I told them not to, 'cause its impossible to keep up with demand”

I don't get out there much anymore, but most of the ones I loved are no longer there, and the few meals I have found, don't end up being consistent. I hit upon a real find, then order it again next time and they overcook it, or they've cut back on the size, altered it in some way saying 'that's how they do it now'. I've give them a few tries on other things but those don't compete.
I'm not into restaurant chicken dishes, and at some places that is most all of their menu.
Of course, one local restaurant seems to think it's necessary to stick big whole beans into nearly everything on their menu. Talk about filler…if they followed labeling guidelines, everything on the menu should be called Beans and _____, not ” Chicken Enchilada”.
I speculate some of the bland comments come from how as people age, they lose their sense of taste. Some people may not know that is part of the aging process..food starts to just be duller than it used to be, so they eat spicier foods..this also leads to a lot of the gastric issues we see.
Pour on the capsicum and vinegar based peppers/salsa.. and pop some prilosec.
That capsicum also boosts your metabolism, fact.

We need a place with a drive thru egg banjo, open face roast beef and mashed, a pork t that tastes like the real bucky's did..not some 'nasty grease' flavor.
(I'm sure all that is at the restaurant up on the highway here…served with enough smoke to kill everyone in there, me first, probably before the meal came)
What is it with so many things now..burgers are messed up, (meaning from the 70's) fried battered things have a 'bad oil' flavor..then you go somewhere and find a real one but of course it's not 'here'.
Anybody else cold today?

You wouldn't say that if you ever saw the kitchen there. I love Rick, but I also know some of his kitchen staff.
Rudy's is the only place that figured out you need red wine and lots of garlic to make a good sauce. Everyone else uses cr*p out of a jar. Rudy's is made fresh every day. Everything at Rudy's is fresh and their kitchen is VERY clean.

Sadly, I can remember when BBob's aka The Smokehouse was brand spanking new. People were wowed by it, staff was nice as anywhere, everything was clean other than the occasional bit of missed bbq sauce, but you'll run in that anywhere until someone sees it.
A new concept place for Lawrence. Two kinds of sauce! Holy moose head! A fritter with your meal, curly fries..this was cutting edge here my friends. Those cold frosty mugs..no breweries in town yet. Coors, bud..few were really complaining, if so, they wanted a Mich, lol.
To sit in the cool basement area in summer with your friends, or upstairs, you seemed away from the world for a while. A bit like back in the Campus Hideaway days.
People as a whole had not become 'fat', so they thought that plate of curly fries was heaven. And they tasted better back then also. Now they have lost something, too dry, leathery.
Restaurants had not switched to the 'larger portions=larger tabs=cover our overhead' agenda back then, so a wheel was a regular sized sandwich, and log was for men, and both weren't too high priced. Probably kept some students from making it a weekly joint, but not all.
There was a line for seating for dinner, often for lunch…always on weekends.

Back in the 80's downtown, there was a place called Molly's something. I only got to go there once as we were a young couple spending all our money on necessities, etc. and not dining out. It had home cooked dinner food.
Real mashed potatoes and gravy. I don't remember my entree, but we both left thinking it was awesome. We knew the building space was probably expensive, I think it was in the newly remodeling area at 10th and Mass and wondered how any new place could afford it during those times…which of course, it couldn't..not being a bar.

Let's play semantics. The question was “local”, not
locally owned or non national chain. People are naming restaurants in the city of Lawrence. Therefore, they are “local”.
You've set yourself up to be the “idiot”. Good job “genius”.

Rudy's is definitely the best pizza, and they have finally started putting a fair amount of sauce on like back in the day. A few years ago there was almost no sauce on their pizza and that is the best part I think, everyone else has the same basic cheese and toppings. Matador cafe? I always liked that dive, but was in there last week and ordered chicken tacos. We only have chicken on the weekend the waitress told me. What's up with that? I won't be back any time during the week if that is the case.

I took my Mom to BuffBob's when it was still in the The Malls on Louisiana, it was decent, went a couple times downtown, first was a little below average, but could have been a bad day, you know? Last time we went about 3 years ago, that has been my worst dining experience while in Lawrence since 85. Bad food, bad service, filthy tables…ugh.
We do like our Yello-Sub, Peking Taste for Chinese, my mouth like's their Gen. Tso's but my diabetes doesn't! My Mom's vote would probably go to Paisano's, but we are on a limited budget, so can't explore all the culinary experiences out there, but would be fun! Or not, reading some reviews….diabetes and acid reflux, sure makes a guy's choice of nice spicy food or down to sweet, mouth watering desserts out of the picture. But again, maybe excess of all that, was the cause no doubt! Along with prednisone, I will use that card…lol.

Cornucopia? That goes back a ways, doesn't it? :D That was around when I actually lived in Lawrence and that was in the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth…Now I guess I would choose Local Burger instead, though I don't like their physical place much.
As an “out-of-towner,” I appreciate all the choices of places to eat in Lawrence. I love this discussion because I see some places I haven't tried yet that sound worthy.
As far as some of the other places, Teller's and Pachamama's are overpriced for me. I do miss the Paradise Cafe. Milton's is pretty good, though. Love Zen Zero, La Parilla, Mad Greek and Thai Siam for being good, and for being right downtown and easy to find. I like India Palace as well, especially the lunch buffet. Ingredients, to me, is gimmicky, loud and overpriced.
I'm very fond of the many wonderful beers at Free State Brewery, and the great location. The food is OK; I don't expect gourmet dishes from what is basically a bar and grill place. The atmosphere is a bit crowded and loud for an old-timer like me, though.
Rudy's is some of the best pizza I've ever eaten, and I've eaten a lot of pizza.
Tortas Jalisco has been very inconsistent for me. One trip the food was great, another trip it just plain sucked. And sometimes there aren't enough servers on duty to handle the workflow.
For subs, Yello Sub.
Now to make my list of other places to try…yum!

Oh here we go again!! In the words of Stuie, thats fresh JokerObama, thats fresh. So ingenious, really, so fresh.
And I love how you get in the cocaine line, so fresh. Where did you get that, so fresh. Oh and throw in the doesn't pay his employees line, so fresh and good, really good. You are special, and so fresh!
Thanks Marion and puddleglum for the plug, we have cleared up all the issues, just haven't had a chance to remove the lein.
Well I guess I have become the the new Bob Schumm for all the street kiddies who complain about everything from politics to pizza, but can't hold a steady job. [HINT: Don't steal, don't lie, show up to work on time.]
I want to give a compliment to my current staff in my Lawrence store. We finallly worked to remove all the theives, stoners, and scumbags and have a really great staff at this time. And if you happen to come in trying to get a free slice off your smelly roommate, he doesn't work here anymore, I'd try finding him over at special kmat and JokerObama's studio apartment.
And I know PK's has a lived in look, but the staff works hard to keep it clean, and we do serve 5,000+ slices a week, along with a old downtown building, it can get this look. It gets a thorough cleaning every night. And we do have health inspections, esp when a disgruntle employee calls the Health Dept and claims her sick daughter ate there. Now thats fresh, so fresh. Very new, sneaky love it! Trust me, nothing stays in that restaurant long enough to go bad. We turn our coolers over daily.
Oh and JokerObama, i'm a single dad who raises my 4 year son alone by myself. I work in the office above PK's everyday, dare you to come say those words to my face. I'm always up for a good fight, I'll let you swing first!@!! YeeHaw!!
And JokerObama, you don't have to eat PK's, Because Doug Compton is opening a Pyramid Pizza in the Hookah store. Yaahoo, pass the honey!! The crust, get it
PS, Johnny's for the classic, even if Rick did borrow my recipe
On monday had the Salad Soup combo at Free State. Cheddar Ale, Roasted Red Pepper Dressing, and Two pints of the Rye, Amazing! Way out of JokerObamas league, don't ya think?
