O_M, we tasted the nutritional yeast (now known as NY) out of the bag and it is YUMMY!! Is NY the same as brewer's yeast (now known as BY)? Or should I have gotten BY instead of NY? The clerk kind of turned up her nose when I said BY for popcorn and said no, you want NY.

BY was a lot more dough, though (pun definitely intended).

Gootsie: Did you try it though? It's yummy, I'm surprized there isn't a brewer's yeast flavor out there for popcorn or chips, instead, it's an ingredient. Crunchy, tastes like the product of cheddar, parmesan, & toasted almonds.

0

Gootsie 5 years ago

Well I went to the Merc last night to get brewer's yeast and they told me it's not brewer's yeast but nutritional yeast?

Me - I'm glad you enjoyed it. Pretty tasty!

autie - I'd guess the salted fish in a barrel with rice and vinegar is from before refrigeration. Most meats were salted or smoked for keeping.

Original_Me 5 years ago

Multi- I think I know what show you're talking about, didn't the animal turn into maggets & they ate the maggets? Something "Tribe" or "Tribal" w/that one guy. Bear Grills eats all kinds of things I think out-scales Andrew Zimmerman. Andrew just eats foods that aren't unusual to the people who've always had them. But Bear, that guy must really appreciate what he doesn't have to eat for the show when he's off-camera.

Shark,6 mths for proper decomposition. Iceland. Did Tony go there?

0

TOB, you should have called, I really missed Tony this winter.

Autie, do you know about that tribe that buries meat or a head or something in the ground and then comes back a few months later and eats it? They consider it a delicacy. THAT is my all time grossiostmost tv moment. What you see, cannot be unseen. and no, I won't watch two girls one cup for that very reason.

Jersey_Girl:

Mmmmmm!!! Thank you for sharing! My fam & I love popcorn but never had it this way. Yum! (I put some natural sea salt in it ~ the brewer's yeast really does taste like cheese.)

0

autie 5 years ago

makes me wonder about the first guy that thought, "hey, lets take some salted fish and pack them in a barrel with rice and vinegar, then let it sit for about six years..then will eat it" What the hell was he thinking? But it is interesting...the wierd foods and cultures..snake blood anyone?

I get caught up watching weekend marathons in the winter of him and Anthony Bourdain.

0

autie 5 years ago

Why yes indeed. some of that stuff he ate from the street vendors was just plain nasty. And some of that stuff in Japan..uck..that fish aged in nasty rotten rice didn't look very good either..I tend to be more of 'off the cleaning board, rinse and fry'..

0

Salamander. Now I'm thinking of the stuff I watched Andrew Zimmer eat last night...that guy will put about anything in his mouth.

Thank you 1029, I now know what to do with that leftover dab of PH breadstick sauce, there's an oak in the yard. Maybe I'll step on a squirrel on my way, I could use an appetizer, I'm hungry and dinner's not until 6:30. Time to hit the road. Now that DST in in order, I don't have to look into the sun tonight. Few perks with that but I'll take this one.

0

I'm not waiting for game night to try the popcorn w/brewer's yeast, I'm having that tonight while I chill out in front of the boob tube w/"House". He rocks!

Yes, they do apear to be extinct in Kansas and Missouri. Are you sure they can survive winters here? I believe in cold climates they get frostbite on their tails and die from infection.

0

commentator_on_the_axe 5 years ago

That actually was a coypu from another wetland. I'm hoping they will introduce them to the new wetlands too. That way, we can hold a contest to hunt them, wear their fur. Eat them,as they are lean and low cholesterol, then complain when the city has to spend $2mill to eradicate them latter on when they cause to much damage. They should make for great photos with our local kids at the hunt. In fact, I sense a whole new LJW section on How to Deal with Coypu in your yard. The possibilities are endless.

0

Jersey_Girl 5 years ago

My, where do you find such large salamanders? I have to confess, I was wondering just how satisfying salamander kabobs could be, what with how little they are. But salamanders of that size could feed an entire crowd gathered to watch the games.

0

commentator_on_the_axe 5 years ago

Jersey_Girl (Anonymous) says…

What do you put on the kabobs to go with the salamanders?

Glad you asked. I try to choose some items from each section of at the Merc, that way it gives me more chances to disgust the vegans as I ask for ideas to go with salamander meat. I had not thought about asking them if Brewer's yeast is a good seasoning for those, thank you for the idea. eg

0

Jersey_Girl 5 years ago

I personally just sprinkle it on like salt w/o salt or sugar. I suppose you could try it with either or both.

0

Original_Me 5 years ago

Brewer's yeast & popcorn huh? I need to try that. But the usual tv food is popcorn w/parmesan cheese or plain corn chips & salsa.

Jersey_Girl: do you sprinkle the brewer's yeast on like salt? Alone or w/salt or sugar?

Gootsie - so it's the old-fashioned type of popcorn. Do you use Kraft-type grated parmesan cheese or something fancy that if were shredded, would melt? - jerseygirl

Sorry I didn't answer this! You can buy packages of shredded cheeses at the grocery store (cheddar, mozzarella, parmesan, etc.). If this is put over the popcorn while it is warm (and the butter has just been poured on), it will sort of stick to the popcorn. There's always some at the bottom to scoop up and eat. I don't care for the Kraft dried cheese, just the "fresh" ones.

I don't know this interstate convience store pizza, but as an East Coast pizza aficienado, I say Johnny's Tavern has the best pizza in town. Glory Days is also pretty good. The rest, not so much.

0

(Brain fritzes at the thought).. No one has mentioned Chex Party mix.

Does no one make that at home anymore so you can eat it hot? (add peppers to that too, and extra Worch)

trinity, is that a Casey's? Never tried it, but that's closer than the Hut for me. Is it cheaper?

And I see no one has mentioned those little chocolate Hostess Donuts. Have some of those with your popcorn, we don't want Interstate Bakeries to fold now do we?

Gootsie - so it's the old-fashioned type of popcorn. Do you use Kraft-type grated parmesan cheese or something fancy that if were shredded, would melt?

0

This OTS is discriminatory against non BB watchers, I protest!

As for popcorn. Nuke (on top of inverted glass pie plate, always) a regular bag of your fav popcorn. Sprinkle with salt, (popcorn-McD's type salt sticks better), Ground sea salt adds great crunch, too much sodium, and falls off. Sugar, regular or powdered, gives two different tastes. Turbinado mostly falls to the bottom, but adds a crunch.

If you're dieting, you can sprinkle the smallest amount of powdered artificial sweetener also. It's fine enough, that a tiny bit is all it takes, and for some reason, just tastes sweet, not fake like it does in other applications.

Then, open one packet of those Pizza Hut crushed red pepper flakes and sprinkle over top. That is just enough (perhaps a teaspoon or less) to make some catch in the crevices, and a bit fall through. They do tend to also fall on your chest while eating, lol.

It's a great blend of hot, sweet, and salt. Like your hot doritos. I guess you could also use cumin if you want a mexican flavor.

(PS, you may have residue on your fingers (like with other hot chips) so don't rub your eyes, lol.

Shouldn't those of you worrying about Rome burning be doing something more constructive with your time than commenting on this poll? Leave the mundane and insignificant matters of life to those of us who make up the least common denominator of the living. Oh, and please pass the pizza.

0

Gootsie 5 years ago

First, we buy good popcorn at the Merc or (even better) from someone who grew it. We use our stovetop popper that has the stirring dealie, and use a tad bit of oil to pop it. We put it into our KU bowls (that we overpaid for old popcorn for at the game) and pour butter (not margarine) over it, then sprinkle with packaged grated parmesan cheese and a little salt. YUM YUM!

It is fattening but we don't care. It's for the team, you know.

0

Jersey_Girl 5 years ago

So this popcorn with parmesan cheese...is it microwave popcorn or old-fashioned popcorn?

I don't eat during games because I have to remain focused at all times and coach. I have to remind the guy on the free throw line to take a deep breath, relax, etc. It's a tough job but I love it.
