Pink_Sock~ Depends on what you do on your dates! And I'm not saying that anyone is ever justified in calling someone that--they're not. But, sadly, you're right--there is a huge double standard and girls who are sexually active at a young age usually do get the negative reputation, while the guys get high-fived. Totally unfair. I dated a lot but was never called a slut. If anything, I was probably called a pr*** tease because I turned down so many "kind and generous" male offers.Of course, what I was called is just as bogus and insulting as the other term. There are some guys who believe that if the date doesn't end in a home run, the girl is automatically a tease--even if she gave him no reason to expect it would end that way. A good way to weed out the undesirables is to avoid getting too close too fast. The guys who respect that and even expect to wait awhile = gold! Paying your own way on dates helps, too--the nice guys appreciate it (at 16 or 17, they usually don't have any more money than the girls do) and the ones who turn out to be jerks are thrown off balance and don't get a chance to feel "entitled to compensation." You can also quickly find out if they have macho/controlling issues. If they get belligerent and refuse to ever "let you" pay, walk away.

Pink_SockI think it was Dear Abby who just said, "Remember the line, A slut is anyone who is more popular that you are!"

I hung out with girls, did stuff that most consider dating. Movies, restaurants, arcade, hanging by the lake, parties, etc..But the girl I wanted to date... naw, never got the time of day...

Multidisciplinary 5 years, 2 months ago

Maybe, What's love got to do with it"?Or this one..They all said Louise was not half bad It was written on the walls and window shadesAnd how she'd act the little girlThe Deceiver, don't believe her, that's her tradeSometimes a bottle of perfume,Flowers and maybe some laceMen brought Louise ten cent trinketsTheir intentions were easily tracedOh but everybody thought it kind of sadWhen they found Louise in her roomThey'd all, put her down below their kindStill some cried when she died this afternoonLouise rode home on the mail trainSomewhere to the south I heard it saidToo bad it ended so ugly,Too bad she had to go this wayAh but the wind is blowing cold tonightSo good night Louise, good night

I learned the truth at seventeenThat love was meant for beauty queensAnd high school girls with clear skinned smilesWho married young and then retired. The valentines I never knewThe Friday night charades of youthWere spent on one more beautifulAt seventeen I learned the truth. And those of us with ravaged facesLacking in the social gracesDesperately remained at homeInventing lovers on the phoneWho called to say come dance with meand murmured vague obscenitiesIt isn't all it seemsAt Seventeen-Janis Ian (I guess that's why she likes girls...)

I wonder the same thing, Calliope. I think back to the guys I was absolutely over the moon for my senior year, and now? Married and married. Thank goodness those prospects didn't pan out for me!

Sorry, Right-thinker, but I've rarely had the energy or the inclination to hate. It takes way too much energy.

I dated a little bit during my junior and senior year of HS, but that's about it. I don't understand people who are still dating someone from junior high or highschool...it seems to me those relationships would get stagnant after a while, but I guess it works for some people. All the more power to them.

omg, now i don't know what was funnier; the "look at this Richard, just look at it", the "yellow shafts of sponge" line, or the "crime scene cookies"! that was a great letter, loved it!

Jonas, it's OK. I was a rebellious little sh*t in high school too. Hated the jocks, although I played baseball. Hated the teachers, hated the principal, hated the "in-crowd" etc etc. I and my brother had our circle of friends that we got stoned with each and every single day, multiple times--before school, after school, that night.....I didn't give a flying flip about what anyone thought of me. I just did my time and got the hell out of that depressing place.

much to my mama's chagrin, yes. But she wasn't too worried after that fall musical!!

Not users, but "Lawrence Journal Wingnuts".Sounds about right, doesn't it?trinity,If we look back at the fish I released with compared to who I married, you would laugh. I wasn't smart enough to fish for big game, I just dated people I ran into and liked. The fun part, is how after all these years, many of those men I released are getting back in touch. I guess the 'fishing trips' are fond memories, lol.

Yep, Right-thinker, it was the truth. Perhaps because a lot of high-school kids, in general, are terrified of deviation and free thought, often self-delusional, and constantly looking for a scapegoat. . . . . should I say it? . . . . . . yeah why not?Much like wingnuts.

you md obviously are a better "picker" than i; now that i'm looking hard at the big 5-0, i can see how right mama was! her favorite word for 'em was "bums". :) but hey, i always chose ones with really cool cars! :) and musicians...have always had a musician kinda thing...and no i don't know zetta-i don't think!

I dated a lot....surprised I didn't get some kind of reputation. I guess that's because I never dated a guy from my own town and just dated guys from other towns. Maybe my reputation wasn't so good in neighboring towns. :-) For me it was a game, I wanted to date as many guys as possible. I only wish now I would have dated for quality and not quantity. I would have loved to have had a high school sweetheart that I dated for 3 years instead of 3 months. Then again, maybe that's why I'm happily married....I sowed my wild oats early on.

invictus 5 years, 2 months ago

I had to beat the ladies off with a stick in high school because I was already dating my future wife. But we went on dates every Saturday night.

0

zettapixel 5 years, 2 months ago

I was in the only rock band in my particular zip code, so yes... I "dated" a lot. ;)

Interesting ways people are taking this question.I would read that as, did you date a lot, or stay home without anyone (date) to go out with. But it seems some are taking it as meaning how many different people did you go out with.So I guess it requires two answers?Typically was attached so was out or in with someone nearly every fri and sat, maybe sun and some after school stuff. One kid for 1 1/2 years pretty much then two more the next 1 1/2. A couple of strays in between long terms, in teenage measurements. And trinity, my mama didn't mind the oldest man, I think she saw that PhD and was trying to marry me off! lol. Comically, she told my sister's (who died) boyfriend a few years later, that he couldn't date me as the age difference was too great. (5 yrs). Then, I ended up marrying someone the same difference.

Abbi - you stick to your plan, no need to date until around 27.

as in go by and pick her up, meet the folks, go to a movie? I think not. it was more like third rate romance, low rent rendevous.

"...and I was the quiet wierd guy in high-school..." -JonasNoooo!!??

0

trinity 5 years, 2 months ago

much to my mama's chagrin, yes. if you can call what went on between myself and much older guys "dating". don't be readin' this, hawklet! ;) hey it was the early/mid 70's ok???

I remember "going steady" in 6th grade, although the only place we went to was lunch and recess. It sure seemed more important then than it does now.

0

mom_of_three 5 years, 2 months ago

no, not really. Depends on who you compare it to. Remember watching reruns of "The Brady Bunch" and Marcia had like a couple of dates a week, each time with a new guy. Didn't know if that was real or not, but not in my life. I moved a few times in my freshmen - junior year and that made it kind of hard. But I had a boyfriend my entire senior year.

not really just kinda went out with groups of friends never wanted to just hang with one peron that much. of course my graduating class was only 33 so you kinda knew everyone to well.

RETICENT_IRREVERENT 5 years, 2 months ago

Well,I guess, kinda sorta yes. What else does a red blooded american with commitment issues do?

0

jonas_opines 5 years, 2 months ago

Generally I've found my significant other through friends. I've never tried the first date blind date etc scene, and from the opinions of those who have, I don't regret it, either. Oh, and I was the quiet wierd guy in high-school, probably because I hated it there, so no.

Donnuts 5 years, 2 months ago

I heard of people dating each other from grade school on. I was never part of that. I tried to get to know some girls in junior high but I guess I was "really weird" to them as they stated in the yearbook. In high school I actually had some dates. I think sometimes I picked the wrong girl to end up with for three years. After that I dated a few and found that it was much more ado that was worth it so I pursued a career instead and found that people scoffed at that but remembered wasting so much time on a worthless relationship that I did not want to again... for a long time.
