I think the feeling might be similar if it were McCain, it is the hope of recovery from the worst administration in American history.

Agreed Aji! We can hold our heads up once more!

"You can only blame Bush for so long, then who will the Democrat President, Democrat Senate, and Democrat House blame for the problems in this country."The speech was yesterday, not six months from now.Certainly many share the blame for the mess we are in, but no one deserves more blame than Bush, and those who have (and still) supported him.At any rate, I got no impression from this speech that Obama intends to spend much time looking backward at the jerks who created the mess that's now up to him, and us, to clean up.

jumpin_catfish 9 years, 4 months ago

Stay on the meds folks you are going to need them in a few months when the economy nationally and globally goes down the drain. One consolation we can always blame Bush.

Godot 9 years, 4 months ago

It was a compilation of tired, old cliches, delivered very powerfully. The best part was the use of lyrics from a song from an old Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movie: "pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again." Pirouette, grapevine, jazz hands, big smile, slide.......unfortunately, he said it so earnestly and with such gravity that I do not believe he knew he was lifting song liyrics without attribution.

Shane Garrett 9 years, 4 months ago

Thought the speech was average. You all know those relaxed banking regulations were put in under Clinton. Bush tried 19 times to have them changed but was blocked by congress.

Mary Darst 9 years, 4 months ago

The speech was good. Inspiring. I hope the world will start to respect us more and we can shake that bully attitude. I feel he has the right attitude. Things are not going to happen overnight and anything that happened before Monday at 12a.m. eastern is not his fault.

"...I got no impression from this speech that Obama intends to spend much time looking backward at the jerks who created the mess..."...but some of the posters on this board will continue to do so for years to come.

flux 9 years, 4 months ago

I hope Obama doesnt take 4 vactions in the first 6 months of office like Bush did.

Flap Doodle 9 years, 4 months ago

Is it now okay for us peasants to speak Barry's middle name since he used it while taking the oath of office?

ms_canada 9 years, 4 months ago

I wish to give a great big compliment to all Americans. You did yourself proud yesterday. I was enthralled by the whole day. You must all cling to an audacity of hope for your future. I just pray it is as bright as it seems now. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!

Better then just plain loosing it....liberty 1.

sfjayhawk 9 years, 4 months ago

I thought it was good, but pretty sober. My guess is that Mr Obama had a chance over the last couple of weeks to get a really good look at the mess he is faced with. After seeing all the problems, my guess is that he toned the speech down quite a bit.

Left_handed 9 years, 4 months ago

flux,Just what the heck is a 'vaction'?

sfjayhawk 9 years, 4 months ago

At least he used real words, not the made up variety that his predecessor was so found of. Oh, and complete sentences with proper grammar and good diction as well. What a refreshing change! Its hard not to admit that having a president that can use his native language properly and with eloquence is a nice thing.

flux 9 years, 4 months ago

That would be vacation dumb ass. I know I miss spelled it but come on, its not that hard to figure out. My god, you used the word heck, you freaking hillbilly.

Christine Anderson 9 years, 4 months ago

Okay. I did not want this man to become president. I didn't vote for him. But..yes, the speech was good. I really think, though, it's way too early to be celebrating. I still have some major reservations about Obama politically. No matter who the incoming Pres is, he has to prove himself over time. In other words, how can some of us be whooping it up about how great Obama is, when he is just now beginning his job?? I would rather take a "wait and see" attitude. On the other hand, politics aside, the man did look incredibly HOT in that tux, tails, white shirt....

sgtwolverine 9 years, 4 months ago

I don't know; I didn't watch it or listen to it, and I haven't read it. It's just another speech, and I don't think it holds much relevance to my life today or his actions and decisions over the next four years.Also..." is the hope of recovery from the worst administration in American history."It's WAY too early to declare that. It takes a couple generations to gain the necessary perspective on an administration to make broad judgments like that.

jonas_opines 9 years, 4 months ago

Aw, poor Larry. Degressing to the point where he has to make personal slights on physical appearance. I guess he finally realized he has little else to offer.

Larry - you can joke all you want at our Health Care system but I wonder if your mom or grama has health care that she can rely on with paying a cent. As a senior I pay no premiums or co-pays. Can your grama say that? Can she go to the health clinic any time of the day or night, get excellent care, blood work, ECG, exrays, and even a CT head scan at 2am. That recently was my lot. when my BP went sky high. Diagnosis, Meniere's Disease. (disturbance of the inner ear fluid that causes extreme nausea and affects your balance) And yes, my teeth are just fine, thank you

Bias polling by the LJW....The Merc, give me a break!Try polling a business where real people (not KU lemmings) do business. Not likely to get such positive and warm comments.

Flap Doodle 9 years, 4 months ago

"He won't get anything done if the Republicans refuse to support him and accept difficult challenges ahead..."Have you noticed that Democrats control both houses of Congress?

Godot 9 years, 4 months ago

That Obama is a man of honor is yet to be proven. I can't site a single example so far. Let us all hope that he becomes one. Hopey. Changey.

purplesage 9 years, 4 months ago

In the interest of history, I watched an old video of Dr. King on Monday evening. I think many people were anticipating a day like that one, with a speech of that caliber. He failed to deliver and I fear the administation will too. When many folks come down from the euphoria they need to listen again. Our nation needs leaderhip. I think this adminstration is more about the leader than anything else. I'm not holding my breath. Change we will get; but will it be for the better?i

purplesage 9 years, 4 months ago

President Obama identifies himself as African-American. though he is of mixed race, 50% White. He identifies with the Civil Rights movement though he (thankfully) has no slave ancestry. It is a blight on our nation's history that any man or woman of any race has a slave ancestry. And on the race subject, Rev. Lowry's final jab may the "white find the right" was a racist comment and highly inappropriate.

Flap Doodle 9 years, 4 months ago

For the last 8 years, we've been hearing how dissent is patriotic. Now that the O'dude's taken up residence in the White House, that's not going to change, is it?

oldvet 9 years, 4 months ago

Will one of his speech writers have their butt in the ringer for the error in the second paragraph? Or did the messiah write this himself and blow it?"Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath."No you big dummy, only forty-three Americans have... Grover Cleveland took the oath two times, once as the 22nd President and once as the 24th President. His terms were split by the 23rd president, Benjamin Harrison, thus Cleveland took the oath two times...Way to blow it on day one... the first of many to come...

beatrice 9 years, 4 months ago

Funny how only those on the right are calling him "messiah." I guess it goes hand in hand with their denial that they broke what needs to be fixed in the first place. True Americans are with you Mr. President.

I went to the gas station this morning. Those racists wouldn't take a slightly used B. Hussein bumpersticker as payment for a tank of gas.

Max1 left out the guts of Limbaugh's remark about his desire for Obama's success: From the transcript:"So then the question becomes: Do you want him to succeed? RUSH: Now, this... (turns to camera) I am so glad that he asked me that question. (turns back to Hannity) I am so glad that you asked me this question. HANNITY: I'm glad to. (chuckles) RUSH: I'll tell you why. I am hearing many Republicans say that very thing. "Well, we want him to succeed," and prominent Republicans! "Yes, we want him to succeed." They have laid down. They have totally. They're drinking the Kool-Aid, too. They have no guts to stand up for what their beliefs are because they're afraid of criticism. They're afraid of being called racists. They're afraid of not having gotten with the program. Now success can be defined two ways. I said earlier, "I don't know about this guy." I really don't. I've got my suspicions and they're pretty close to convictions, but we're going to have to wait to see what he does. Now if he turns out to be a Reagan, if he adds Reagan to his recipe of FDR and Lincoln -- HANNITY: (laughing) RUSH: -- and if he does cut some taxes -- HANNITY: Yeah. RUSH: -- if he does not eliminate the Bush tax cuts, I would call that success. So yes, I would hope he would succeed if he acts like Reagan. But if he's going to do FDR -- if he's going to do The New New Deal all over, which we will call here The Raw Deal -- why would I want him to succeed? Look, he's my president. The fact that he is historic is irrelevant to me now. It matters not at all. If he is going to implement a far-left agenda... Look, I think it's already decided: a $2 trillion in stimulus? The growth of government? I think the intent here is to create as many dependant Americans as possible looking to government for their hope and salvation. If he gets nationalized health care, I mean, it's over, Sean. We're never going to roll that back. That's the end of America as we have known it, because that's then going to set the stage for everything being government owned, operated, or provided. Why would I want that to succeed? I don't believe in that. I know that's not how this country is going to be great in the future; it's not what made this country great. So I shamelessly say, "No! I want him to fail." If his agenda is a far-left collectivism -- some people say socialism -- as a conservative heartfelt, deeply, why would I want socialism to succeed?"

TopJayhawk 9 years, 4 months ago

Soaring rhetorc, empty words.I still don't know who he is. well really I do.Firt he's JFK, then it's FDR, (another socialist) now he's honest ABE.Did anyone tell him that during the Civil War, Abe suspended habius corpus, and threw away the key untill the war was over? Sorry to throw out "inconvenient truths" at all of you.How many more criminals is he going to appoint to his cabinet? HMMMM?Ethical government indeed.

TopJayhawk 9 years, 4 months ago

ms canada. No you don't pay a dime. All of the taxpayers have to carry your water. Pay attention to your own politics. Which are very convenient for you. Canada gives no foriegn aid. You rarely help (afghanastan exceepted) and you spend very little on your national defense because you know we guarantee your safety. So, be quiet, and go stand over there.

oldvet 9 years, 4 months ago

beatrice (Anonymous) says…Funny how only those on the right are calling him “messiah.” I guess it goes hand in hand with their denial that they broke what needs to be fixed in the first place.Actually, beatrice, it was Obama's own who called him the messiah..."Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, another powerful Chicago-based political figure associated with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and other long-time associates of Democratic Party presidential candidate Barack Obama, is leaving no doubt about what he thinks of the leader in the campaign for the White House. He says when Obama talks "the Messiah is absolutely speaking." is the looney left that considers him their messiah...

Schumer did, indeed, cause a run on Indy-Mac. The only question is, why? What did he have to gain from that?
