Nope. I don't need someone else's junk. got plenty, thanks.
ohjayhawk (anonymous) says…
Absolutely. Most of the decor in our house has come from garage/yard sales.
trinity (anonymous) says…
oh heck yeah, i gather tons of neat stuff at garage sales...use what i can, then have my own garage sale...only i have yard sales because i don't have a garage :(

Why wasn't this question asked at The Merc, or downtown?
Did the LJW think they would find a better/different response at HyVee? Sounds like the usual bias to me. But then the LJW is an award winning newspaper. What is next? Asking the people at Dillons on Mass, "Do you live in a trailer"?
autie (anonymous) says…
trinity, do you call it "Flip this Junk?"

I like to go to garage sales, but don't always buy. I have a friend that goes to garage sales and looks in every box, hoping to find a bargain. I have had many garage sales over the years and they are a lot of work.
RoeDapple (anonymous) says…
consumer1 - no coffee this morning?
;-)
The_Original_Bob (anonymous) says…
Oh, hell no.Garage sales are just passing along crap that was previously bought at garage sales. Although, having a garage sale is a good way of getting rid of junk to suckers.
RETICENT_IRREVERENT (Ronaldo Ignacio) says…
No.
Garage sales create a huge carbon footprint, are associated with traffic problems, and endanger the whole community with the spread of pestilence and disease.
In a city as green as ours, these triggers of mass extinction that change the atmospheric composition so dramatically that vegetation is irretrievably damaged.should be banned.
Mark my words, the heated frenzy created by these will be the starting points for the riots

When I was outfitting my first apartment, I bought some items at garage sales. Not that I had much time to do it, but sometimes its a good place to get kids clothing.

Roedapple you are correct. I found and removed that bug that has been up my Arse for some time now. Thanks for pointing out my negative attitude.

When I used to work second shift, I would hit the sales fairly early on Fridays. I still go but only occasionally...just not enough time.
A better question might be - What is the coolest/weirdest thing you ever got at a garage sale? About fifteen years back, I bought a mid-sixties Honda 305cc cycle for fifty or sixty bucks. It was completely chromed including the frame, swingarm and gas tank. I was told that a Honda dealership had it done as some special promotion. Too bad my brother talked me into selling it to him. It is long gone now.
autie (anonymous) says…
oops..I didn't do that right. try this one.

RETICENT_IRREVERENT (Ronaldo Ignacio) says…
Any of these "garage sales" that sell childrens clothing, toys, or furniture are going to be operating illegally.
Tuesday, the brand-spanking-new Consumer Protection Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) went into effect. This lengthy, vaugely-worded piece of legislation regulates the amount of lead and phthalates (a type of plastic softener) that are allowable in products marketed toward or inteded for use primarily by children under the age of twelve.
Under the new law, each individual component of items must be tested by an accredited laboratory. Testing runs $70 per component for lead, and $250 to test each part for phthalates.
Are the people who hold these "garage sales" going to have their wares tested?
No.
Shut them down!
autie (anonymous) says…
I did buy a shirt at a garage sale once, for a quarter. Got home and found a five dollar bill in the pocket.
trinity (anonymous) says…
argh, my first post made it sound as though i carry home truckloads of crap from garage/yard sales, lol...i am very selective about the crap i buy, and it is not in mass quantities! some expeditions result in a lot of stuff, other? go home empty handed. i actually prefer estate sales and auctions to garage sales...get my game face on for those, lol.
hmm, coolest/weirdest thing ever gotten at a garage sale...that'd be a tie between my pez dispensers and the chrome toasters i used to collect.
The_Original_Bob (anonymous) says…
I'm with R-I on this one. Ban garage sales to save our planet... and others. Look what our carbon footprint is doing to Jupiter.

No, at semester's end I drive the alleys in the student getto and apartment parking lots and get everything for free. What i don't want, I give to a buddy who has a garage sale in august selling the crap back to the students.
Don't listen to R_I, I think his remarks are part of the pump and dump of carbon credits he is trying to pull off.
Bob, we are quieting the sun for our children by our actions.

I am writing a book to bring this to the light of day, "Silent Solar Spring".
Dejacrew423 (anonymous) says…
I love going to city wide garage sales. I'm so glad it's garage sale season again!
RETICENT_IRREVERENT (Ronaldo Ignacio) says…
prospector,
Your assumptions are flawed, the Maunder Minimum between 1645 and 1715, and it's associated "Little Ice Age" was a fluke.
Show me the total solar irradiance (TSI), indexes from that period.
The_Original_Bob (anonymous) says…
Prospector -
Our earthly actions are not only killing our planet, but also the entire solar system? We, as a country, should be ashamed of ourselves and wallow in self-loathing. Someone pass me a carbon credit to dry my tears.
sgtwolverine (anonymous) says…
I used to shop at garage sales, but then I found the garage I wanted, so I stopped.
HermioneElliott (anonymous) says…
Anyone every buy something for twenty-five cents at a garage sale, take it to Antique Roadshow and find out it is worth $100,000?
Me neither, but I love it when it happens. I'd just like to know how they do it.
prospector (anonymous) says…
R_I, as for the TSI, the only thing constant is change.
Ponder me this. After the next geomagnetic reversal, will the Garmin Nuvi © information be upside down?
The_Original_Bob (anonymous) says…
"After the next geomagnetic reversal, will the Garmin Nuvi © information be upside down?"
Trick question. It won't matter after the riots because nothing will be recognizable and the Nuvi is for finding and not fleeing.
cj123 (anonymous) says…
sometimes! it is fun looking at the junk people collect!
autie (anonymous) says…
We will still be able to navigate and locate by the stars, right?
R_I, as for the TSI, the only thing constant is change.
that is TMI..way too heavy to worry about in July.
RETICENT_IRREVERENT (Ronaldo Ignacio) says…
prospector,
T_O_B is spot on, plus in a real total geomagnetic reversal, the magnetosphere will basically disintegrate and the resulting solar wind will take out all the GPS satellites.
I sure hope that your sextant has an artifical horizon, that, and you have the proper insignia on your escape vehicle.
consumer1 (anonymous) says…
I like check out the junk women carry in their trunks.
prospector (anonymous) says…
R_I,
I keep the USGS topos stashed deep in the mine. I have learned to read them upside down. I will never have any travel troubles. I don't have to escape from anything. After the Smithing lessons from Walt, I have no worries. The need for an escape vehicle will be to escape from me. It is sad that some think knapping skills will suffice. You know the old knapping joke, what did one knapper say to the to the other knapper? Damn, my thumb hurts!
What glee I will find as I listen to all the Fred's out there yelling "Willllllmaaaaaa, run faster!"

I wonder if "retail manager" Brad is a member of the Eudora Chamber of Commerce? I certainly hope that he doesn't tweet about his excessive garage sale usage.

maybe better get that old foxfire set out and dusted. Stow em up in the dry bag for later. Next to some field guides, might be the most important references to have.

autie, I got foxfire & firefox crossed up in my mind & was wondering what the heck you were talking about.

I bought a leather jacket at a garage sale and when I went to wear it discovered a bag of weed in the pocket!
Had I been frisked the cops would have never believed it!
RoeDapple (anonymous) says…
My sister has made a modest living in recent years buying garage sale/yard sale items, limiting her purchases to 25 cents per item. She is very selective with what she buys. She then advertises on ebay, often selling items for $25 or more.
My grandmother used to go garage sale shopping every week, then twice yearly have her own sales. She always made low offers on boxes and trays of costume jewelry. Once found a $6000 ring mixed in with everything she brought home.

Same thing happened to me when I went to R_I's garage sale. Let me say this... he has a friend that knows the good stuff.
