Man, like H. Kevin Fulk, I also immediately thought of Subaru-Mitsubishi! What a tremendous rivalry. I can recall so many times I've watched the international racing scene and thought, 'What a great rivalry this truly is.'Jeez. Give us all a break, dude. Nobody cares about your fringe sports.

I remember Colorado v. Nebraska being a fairly serious rivalry, at least when I was at CU. I also went to one Harvard v. Yale game, while in law school, and that was pretty severe. I haven't been since, being that alumni tickets are ridiculously expensive and Harvard's team has been somewhat lacking (even for an Ivy League school).

True. CU v. CSU have always been a big game, but that is expected in an intrastate contest. The riots to which Daytrader23 is referring explain why the games have been moved to Invesco Field. They believe moving it to a neutral site might minimize the chaos.I'll be there this year, as I have been every year since moving back west.

This is such a BS poll. The Newsweek/Kaplan Poll wasn't about sports rivalries. That's why none of the better known ones were included. Besides, the KU/MU rivalry (while it's pretty intense) is not really a 'nationally known' rivalry. It's more well known regionally.

(not allowed on campus) Plus Boulder always finds some excuse to throw a good riot. Sometimes it starts as a party.

Let's not forget the most important rivalry right now ... Michael Phelps vs. the world! Because NBC really wants us to know that Phelps is the Greatest Person Ever To Live. Also, he's going to win eleventy-billion gold medals, which is more than even the great Zeus won in his olympic event of mortal-smiting. Of course, he wouldn't have been able to smite Phelps, as he's not a mortal. Obviously.Actually, it was funny when NBC did its piece on him last night, because here I am 15 miles from Ann Arbor and NBC is showing various Ann Arbor restaurants Phelps likes. He went into one Asian restaurant and was greeted in a warm, friendly manner by one of the guys who runs the place, and a friend of mine said, "Hey! That guy is never that friendly."

The Alabama vs Auburn SEC football rivalry (Iron Bowl) is HUGE. It's been going on since as early as 1905, maybe earlier. For years the game had to be played in a neutral location because both sides felt it unfair when the other team had home field advantage.

"Longhorns vs Sooners"I completely agree. Throw in Ohio St. vs Michigan. The big difference between these two rivalries is that BOTH teams have consistently been good/great every year, reaching back for many decades. KU vs MU in basketball is more like OU vs Oklahoma St in football. Oklahoma St is usually really bad and sneaks a win in on OU every few years, just like MU does to KU in basketball, but MU is not consistently good. Last years MU-KU football game was between 2 great teams, but great rivalries need to be founded on both teams having continued success against the other teams on their schedules. Both KU and MU have not held up historically in football and only KU holds up historically in basketball. Sounds like a good rivalry, but not great.

St. Louis Cards vs Chicago Cubs & Yankees vs Red Sox possibly, but I put them at the same level. I think the fans actually hate each other more in the KU vs MU rivalry, the Cards vs Cubs rivalry is fairly friendly, just a lot of trash talk, but not many fights or threats, etc.
