“I’m pretty big on Oscar the Grouch. I’m a huge pessimist, but I’m a lot nicer about it than he is. I wish I could be that mean sometimes.”

“Beaker from the Muppets. It was my nickname when I was little; sometimes my mom still calls me Beaker. He’s fun because he doesn’t really talk. He just makes sounds to express himself.”

Photo of Andrew P. Witt

“Lambchop. Sherry Lewis was creepy, and her relationship with that puppet was supercreepy. There was always a really strange vibe about the whole show. I suppose I’ve always kind of liked things that are creepy.”

“Elmo. I used to love ‘Sesame Street,’ and he was my favorite character because he was bright red.”

Definitely Franklin from Arrested Development.

Is this a trick question?

If not, then I vote for Lambchop.

sourpus, that's awesome! Mr. Hat is my favorite, too. For a while there I was loving Mr. Stick, but Mr. Hat won me back over. I always kind of dug Chuckie, too.

My least favorite puppet is Cheney Tool George W. Bush.

Dale Stringer 7 years, 10 months ago

I don't mean to be a grinch but is any muppet or puppet truly a "who"?~)

Ignoring that silliness I have to go along with Gootsie's choices. I am only familiar with the Ed Sullivan "version" of TG, though.

another vote for Kermit!

can I vote twice? Mr. Hat was pretty good too.

The American people, the Bush Administration pulled our strings so skillfully during the last presidential election.

Very hard to top Lampchop with Shari Lewis from the old days. And the quintessential puppet, Mr. Moose, on Captain Kangaroo. They rocked!

Janet Lowther 7 years, 10 months ago

Charlie McCarthy from OLD, OLD reruns & tapes.

I wonder if Edgar Bergen even bothered to use Charlie in the radio studio. . . On TV he was an horrible ventriloquist, but on radio that didn't make a bit of difference 'cause he did the character so well.

conservativepunker 7 years, 10 months ago

Hillary Clinton, Dianne Feinstein, Chuck Schumer, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Kathleen Sibelius, Paul Morrison, the city council of Lawrence.......

ImTooOldForThis 7 years, 10 months ago

The Jackie puppet from the "old" Howard Stern show. The pot smoking beer swilling racist puppet cut everyone down to size, no matter who they were. Did a great Marge Schott impression...The Jackie puppet was the funniest thing Billy West ever did. Even funnier than Futurama .

I have to echo the Statler & Waldorf comment.

Triumph to Vegas criminals: 'I poop on you' LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AP) -- Triumph the Insult Comic Dog is now an honorary member of the Las Vegas police department's K-9 unit.

The cigar-smoking, foul-mouthed hand puppet given life by comic Robert Smigel is the first toy Rottweiler adopted into the elite group of bomb-sniffing dogs. The honor was bestowed at the weeklong Comedy Festival that kicked off Tuesday.

"I will do my part to get all the drugs and hookers off the street, and into my hotel room," Triumph said in accepting the honor.....for more on this story, click link:

I was always a big fan of fraggles, too. I absolutely hated the muppets and the sesame street puppets. Still do, too.

Nate Poell 7 years, 10 months ago

The bots from MST3K: Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot, Gypsy and Cambot.

acg, I hate to break it to you, but the Fraggles were muppets.

quietgirl 7 years, 10 months ago

I have to say Kermit also. I LOVE him...

old school -- a tie between Punch and Pinocchio honorable mention -- The Thunderbirds song -- Coin Operated Boy, by The Dresden Dolls

acg 7 years, 10 months ago

Well I never saw any fraggles on the muppet show and I never saw that annoying kermit or mrs. piggy on the fraggles show, so I'm cool with it.

jonas 7 years, 10 months ago

Since my joke about W has been taken, gonna have to side with yoda.

Grundoon Luna 7 years, 10 months ago

Muppets = Mechanical Puppets. Not every movement is generated by humanoids.

Fraggles were also created by Jim Henson which is why thems be muppets.

On to other burning questions or world problems to solve . . . . .

acg 7 years, 10 months ago

A_A totally semantics. To me, muppets are the annoying ones on the muppet show. My mom used to make me watch that and Seasame St. when I was a kid and I hated it and I would tell her but she didn't care. I had nightmares about the two grumpy old men for a year when I was little. Fraggles came out when I was a tween. They weren't scary like the Muppet Show muppets were.

PrincessConsuelaBananaHammock 7 years, 10 months ago

Puppet, Muppet, whatever you want to call him, I have to go with Grover from Sesame Street but only the ones where he was the waiter and annoyed the crap out of that fat blue headed guy!

yourworstnightmare 7 years, 10 months ago

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.

I love this thread....to poop on!

erod0723 7 years, 10 months ago

My favorite puppet: The lawrence city commission and city manager. They are obviously not controlled by developers and interest groups and are looking out for the all of the disenfranchised groups in lawrence, in addition to fulfilling budgetary promises to organizations.

compmd 7 years, 10 months ago

Trekkie Monster.

Because he knows that in a volatile market, the only stable investment is porn.

Linda Endicott 7 years, 10 months ago

I'd forgotten about Madame...yeah, she was pretty funny, too.

Ralph from the Jimmy Dean Show was really one of the early muppets. In fact, he was in a lot of the episodes of the Muppet Show.

I loved those two old guys in the balcony, too...lol.

Yeah, Edgar Bergen was a terrible ventriloquist, but the lines were so damn funny you hardly ever noticed. Matter of fact, I didn't notice till I was in my teens that his mouth moved all the time...lol.

ZDW 7 years, 10 months ago

hmmm, it seems like it could be a toss up between Condoleezza Rice and Animal from The Muppets.

Larry McGlinn 7 years, 10 months ago

Mortamer Snerd!! (he was a friend of Charlie McCarthy)
