Whom would you nominate for Kansan of the year?
Asked at Massachusetts Street on January 25, 2007
“I would suggest the mayor of Lawrence. I’m impressed with a lot of the work he’s done so far.”
“Kirstie Alley, because her weight loss is an inspiration to Kansas women.”
“Thomas Witt, the chair of the Kansas Equality Coalition. I would actually like to nominate everyone in the organization, but if I had to choose one.”
“I’ll go with Paul Morrison for getting rid of Phill Kline. He’s a professional prosecutor who will bring dignity and restraint back to the attorney general’s office.”

I have no nomination, it is just too difficult to choose just one.
sgt, The DeLay + Brownback comment... :) I hear those sing-song words now.. Tom and Sam sitting in a tree, K. I .S........

Changed my mind.
Kathleen Sebelius.
Maybe she will start "The Govenor's one shot ferel pig hunt"?
Gootsie 6 years, 4 months ago
Lots of us on the OTS deserve this nomination. Right now I think it goes to Ceallach and her daughter (tie) for how much strength and fight they are showing.
Kirstie Alley, not so much. Interesting nomination.
Great answer 3of5. I could say the same about my daughter!

Das: Does that mean that Zach was last year's winner?
ba dum chingk
Blue73Harley: Not questioning your assertion, but I fail to see how irritating PETA would cause a rethink on Kansan of the Year. If anything, I would assume that it would actually reinforce it.
Now find me sum swine! SUUUUUEEEEEYYY!
jonas 6 years, 4 months ago
Really, in terms of famous figures or celebrities which are the ones who actually get this award, the one who actually has already been proclaimed KOTY (like POTM! HAHA!), Max Falkenstein, is probably the most logical choice.

faceit, nothing nearly as interesting as this one.

I nominate ms_c as Kansan of the year. I know, technically, she's not from Kansas, but I wanted to try something a little different.
Also, in the "Opinions & Blogs" section of the sidebar, I keep seeing the headline "Tom DeLay likes Sam Brownback," and I keep thinking I'm back in middle school or something.

Kansan of the year - gee this would be a real hard decision. Politicians are not people I would normally vote for let alone nominate for this award. Celebrities get paid for their roles or publicity from everything else that they do, good or bad. Yet, the people who most touch my life probably mean nothing to the others of this world. So, I going to say my first granddaughter. She has done so much in the way of taking responsibility for her own actions and matured in a way that I had formerly thought to be an impossibility. She has made me very proud of her. I nominate my granddaughter for Kansan of the year.

I'd have to nominate anyone who would bring me chips, guac, and margaritas in my time of need. :)
cutny 6 years, 4 months ago
Dennis "Boog" Highberger gets my vote.
oscarfactor 6 years, 4 months ago
Not a single one of the people mentioned so far come close to deserving anything.
Every Kansan fighting/serving in Iraq and Afghanistan deserve this award... give it to them as a group.
RETICENT_IRREVERENT 6 years, 4 months ago
sue, Did some super Kansan do that for you?
Ceallach 6 years, 4 months ago
Thank you, Gootsie :*) My girl should get it -- she's rather weak right now but what a fighter!! All I do is support her efforts. I also have lots of g'baby time, always a good thing. (I've certainly been reminded of why it's best when younger women have the babies and raise the children:)
If we should not nominate a relative I will nominate the bearded_gnome. Talk about an over-comer!! The gnome is like a Timex watch . . . just keeps on ticking. We haven't seen him much on this board lately, but he is still flitting in and out of the other articles.
sgtwolverine 6 years, 4 months ago
As a Michigan resident, I have to mention Kansas natives Walter P. Chrysler and Barry Sanders. Not that they've been too active this past year, but I had to mention them anyway. Michigan appreciates them.
If you've never seen Barry run, you missed out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6YQznRq0sM
Ceallach 6 years, 4 months ago
Thanks, sgt. I may not understand a lot about the game : but I do enjoy watching those loverly men run :)
ms_canada 6 years, 4 months ago
sgt and I_P - thanks very much. But I do think, as ceallach says, the honor should go to bearded_gnome. He is one courageous fellow. A very modest overcomer for sure. His posts can still be seen occasionally on the Sunday question, What are you reading?
Ceallach 6 years, 4 months ago
Reading: "MySQL & mSQL" by O'Reilly -- do I know how to have a good time or what? :P
ronwell_dobbs 6 years, 4 months ago
Clearly, you should be nominated. After all, you were Time's Person of the Year last year. That's a hell of an accomplishment. Go ahead, crack open that Budweiser and give yourself a pat on the back.

The girl in my third hour world history class who can't understand why I threw her test away for text messaging in class. Furthermore, she can't understand why I sent her to the office for cussing at me during her rant on why it should be allowed.

Phill Kline for trying unsuccessfully to prove that no one should be above the law and for suffering through the hate mongering of Kansas' corrupt media.
Kansas, as corrupt and bigoted as you think it is.
ms_canada 6 years, 4 months ago
person of interest - my thoughts on losing weight and inspiration. I don't think the fact that someone else lost a load would inspire anyone. Losing weight is mind over matter as I see it. One must have a certain mind set before the inspiration sets in. I went to Weight Watchers and lost 34 pounds but it took me 1 1/2 years. The real battle was to keep the same mind set once I lost and started on a maintanence program. Sorry to say that I am not doing so well. Can't get that mind set back and neither Kirsty Ally, Oprah or Princess Fergie can help. It must be my own effort.
mushhawk 6 years, 4 months ago
kirstie alley!??????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! shmuck! yeah......i'd bet that her "weight loss" is an inspiration to women across the globe!!!!!!!!!
"ppppppssssshhhhaaawwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
??? LOL!!!

RI, you said "perl" . . . UGH, perk is much better :)
RETICENT_IRREVERENT 6 years, 4 months ago
perl was intended... just for Ceal's sake...:)

Okay. I thought you meant it, but I had to make sure. Either way, big pile of bonus points for that one. Very well done.

I THINK IT SHOULD BE "KANSANS OF THE YEAR"
I NOMINATE "ALL OF THE MILITARY PEOPLE" WHO ARE OVER THERE FIGHTING BUSH AND CHENEY'S STINKING WAR ...
jonas 6 years, 4 months ago
Someone else said that already, and they didn't need to shout, either.
sunflower_sue 6 years, 4 months ago
RI, yep! Your spousal unit gets my vote for Kansan of the year! Her timely delivery of "the comfort meal" is the only thing that got me through that horrid day. I will nominate her for sainthood...someday...far in the future, of course! (besides that, if she is able to put up with you, I'd think some kind of award would be in order...) :)
countrygirl 6 years, 4 months ago
I'm lucky enough to work with the bearded gnome. He's been busy lately, but doing well. I'll tell him he's missed!
Ceallach 6 years, 4 months ago
countrygirl: please do, we haven't had an update on gnome dog for some time now :)
RETICENT_IRREVERENT 6 years, 4 months ago
sue, Yes the spousal unit is deserving of awards. As you stated, she puts up with me, and since I am a shallow and much troubled man, the spousal unit does deserve sainthood.
In recognition of this, we should start addressing her as "St. spousal unit".

Dang--I've been out & about all day & am just getting here. Is it too late to kill a feral hog? How about a domestic duroc or something? I want to kill something. Kill! Kill! Kill! Something porcine and bristly!!!! Wanna p*** off PETA, too! Come on, somebody line me up with a swinish target.
Did somebody mention Phelps? Psuuuiiiiiiieeee!!!
Kansan of the year? Ms C, of course.
sunflower_sue 6 years, 4 months ago
Kansan of the year nominees:
Ms_c i_p sgt. wolvie bea
who did I miss?
Py, I've got a couple of puffle headed chickens that are all yours! Shoot 'em, axe 'em, wring 'em...whatever will make you feel better. Then you can take 'em home and put 'em in a pot, or you can throw 'em in my burn barrel on your way out. Enjoy! (They kinda look like they could be relatives of the Phelps klan.) do take note that they attack...which is why they are headed for the chopping block
RETICENT_IRREVERENT 6 years, 4 months ago
sue, Though she was your first nomination, you did not include the nun / Saint in your list...:(
Pywacket 6 years, 4 months ago
Sue~ Let me at those chickens!! Some day maybe I'll tell you all about the one I weedwhacked! (Not intentionally, mind you--it was roosting in some brush and I didn't see it. What a noise it raised!) Or the close-to-roadkilled-but-no-cigar injured duck I had to choke with my bare hands to put out of its misery... I have a long fowl history of killing, yuk yuk yuk....
TOB~ Thanks for the great link. How do you think zombie jerky would taste?
And speaking of "kill! kill! kill!", I wonder if Arlo himself has any Kansas ties. I'd be proud to nominate him (or his old man posthumously) for Kansan of the Year.
Gootsie 6 years, 4 months ago
And Ceal and female offspring.
RETICENT_IRREVERENT 6 years, 4 months ago
Py, Arlo's paternal grandmother was born in Kansas before she ended up where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain. Thats a tie to Kansas right?
gregl 6 years, 4 months ago
I thought that all of you people who were critical of the Kirstie Alley comment should be aware the the reporter on the street asking who should be Kansan of the Year suggested to Lindsey that Paul Morrison would be a good choice....a great example of attempted media manipulation by the Lawrence Journal World. I applaud Lindsey for having a sense of humor and nominating Ms. Alley. I find humor in that people take Lindsey's nomination so seriously, she considered it funny too.
Thanks, Lindseys Dad

Kansan of the Year - Lindsey Long (for having a sense of humor)
and a caring father.....

budwhysir 6 years, 4 months ago
I nominate frosty the snowman, he has made many appearances right here in our home town
sunflower_sue 6 years, 4 months ago
RI, I was trying to limit my 2nd list to non-current-Kansans...duh!
Py, you and I would get along great! ;)
budwhysir 6 years, 4 months ago
Bud:
You cant nominate yourself for this award

3hkjabdio3q4yr9134fklc io23y4r913 know what I mean?!!?
sgtwolverine 6 years, 4 months ago
I'm good with Lindsey's dad, too. It is hard to spot sarcasm in the answers.
TOB, I'm with you -- I'd probably want to give some snarky answer. The challenge would be to make it snarky enough to be funny but ostensibly straight enough to make the cut.
budwhysir 6 years, 4 months ago
Sean, I think you are on the wrong post
budwhysir 6 years, 4 months ago
I nominate budwhysir
Pywacket 6 years, 4 months ago
RI~ good digging. Not surprised. I wonder if that connection is cause for amusement, embarrassment, pride, or indifference...
Sue~ I agree! Let's get together some time, share some margarita pitchers, and kill us some chickens! Then we'll go throw paint and feathers on PETA people! ;-)
yousuck 6 years, 4 months ago
wow, everyone in lawrence has their head stuck so far up their ass, and are oblivious to the world around them, that they think that the mayor of lawrence should be kansan of the year, as for kirstie alley, its pretty funny, and i knew from the minute i read it that it was a joke, obviously some people on here are way to uptight.
