Should a House committee consider a bill that would pre-empt Lawrence from adopting a domestic partner registry?
Asked at Borders, 700 N.H. on February 16, 2007
“I’m all for the domestic partner registry, but I understand their concern that the city would undermine the policies of the state.”
“Absolutely not. First of all, it’s none of their business, and I think it’s mean-spirited not to allow the law to develop. I can’t see any legitimate reason for the state to get involved.”
“I don’t think so, because I’m in favor of there being a registry here. I think people are entitled to the rights it would provide.”
“They should consider it only because it’s bound to become a statewide issue eventually. I think in the end it should be decided by the state and not by individual cities.”

James has a pretty good answer. Mine is that the push against is just as big of a waste of our politico's time as the original registry was in the first place. I'm all for a show of solidarity with the gay community, but if the govt. gets involved it should produce something of value.
I know, I know, govt./produce something of value is kind of a paradox. I can hope, can't I?

Interesting that when people wish to expand rights to include everyone (not just a privileged group) that there is this uproar. I would ask anyone on the streets if they would be ambivalent or opposed if a company/local government were giving someone health insurance that the state failed to provide? Why have local governments if they can't have local law? Why question the right of other people to live their own lives, especially when it is none-of-your-business?
meadowbreeze (anonymous) says…
So Jonas ... does value = marriage? If so, fine by me. But are we allowed to say that in Kansas?
busymom (anonymous) says…
I believe since the ban on same sex marraige is based on religion, that lawrence should recognize and let these people have the rights they are supposed to have anyway. In fact I think the ban in all states it's in should be overturned as it is unconstitutional ie freedom of religion.
jonas (anonymous) says…
I don't know if marriage should be the end goal. I don't believe that is a reachable one, at this time. To be totally honest, I am of the opinion that the time in which the homosexual community might have aquired some rights to union is passed for the time being. I think there was a chance, before the '04 election, at snagging civil unions as a consolation prize, and then building off that when the world and society did not collapse around our ears as some believe that it would. With the push towards full marriage and full equality, the return push was too hard, and now it's not really very likely. As harsh as it sounds, I think that it's time for the homosexual community to table the issue, or adapt it to make it specifically about property and decision rights.
The_Original_Bob (anonymous) says…
If I were gay and wanted to get married, I'd be mad as hell about a "domestic partner registry." All it is some 1/4 ass compromise that will not mean a thing. It sounds like it is nothing different than getting your pit bull or boat registered.
Topside (anonymous) says…
Don't people read the Xmen comics. The registry is bad. They just want to round you up do experiments and exploit your superpowers of style and design.

"superpowers of style and design" -- great one, Topside!
This is just more of the typical hate coming from the hard right. Those folks won't be happy until everyone conforms to their extremist, fundamentalist standards and becomes as miserable as they are. Ugh.

The government is wasting time and money on this issue. I wish people could live their lives without government interference (life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness). How many hours are being burned on this issue. The government's job is to deal with the general public (housing, security, economy, etc.). Didn't we learn anything during the civil rights movement.

When TudeDude was about 9 years old, Mississippi Burning was showing on Network TV. He saw the church burning he had an awful look on his face. I said, "the church was burned just because black people worshipped there and the white people were trying to control them." So then he popped off with the above quote. I thought to myself, "wow, they are teaching some really good stuff in school these days!" I asked him if he learned that in school and he says, "No, X-Men!!" What an awesome thing to learn from a comic book series!

Perhaps the only answer to many of our political problems in Lawrence is secession. Lawrence doesn't like Kansas, Kansas doesn't like Lawrence, we just oughta split the blanket and be done with it.
Bobby, did you catch the Friedman interview on FoxNews this morning? I just love that guy, particularly fond of his solution for securing the border roflol!!!
Pywacket (anonymous) says…
It's high time for Lawrence to secede from the miserable, jerkwater, uberconservative state of Kansas. Perhaps Lawrence could become a satellite city of Wisconsin, Oregon, Illinois, or another blue state.
Lawrence might still be more progressive and socially accepting than its new state, but if L'ville picks a state that isn't chockful of fundies and homophobes, the city is more likely to be allowed to do its own thing without intervention from Big Brethren.
James has a good point--or would have if he lived in a less lockstep-conservative state--but I think he underestimates how many centuries it will take for this matter to become "a statewide issue" here.
I'll take his supposition one further and say it should become, not a statewide, but a nationwide, issue--preferably at such time when the Supreme Court isn't packed with Scalias & Thomases--but for people who are looking for social and legal justice now, progressive cities like Lawrence may be their best hope--unless the state is allowed to undermine the city's efforts.

The_Original_Bob (anonymous) says…
Lawrence hates KS/ KS hates Lawrence is just not true. One crackpot politician introduces a crackpot idea and all of the sudden he speaks for the whole state? I understand there are political/social/cultural differences amongst the two. Can we just say that Lawrence is the independent and wild and slightly crazy sibling?
I was living in SW KS back during secession talk because the state was not helping secure water rights that Colorado had stolen. A couple other reasons as well. They looked like fools because instead of addressing the problem, they wanted to run and hide and avoid dialogue. Not everyone gets what they want. Grown folks know how to deal with it though.

No, unless they also consider a bill that pre-empts Lawrence from proclaiming such things as International Dadaism Month.
The underlying issue:
"Domestic Partner Registry"
Domestic Partner Registry, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, y'all
What does this registry accomplish?... Zip
It is in essence a public record allowing the Phelps clan to picket on the sidewalk in front of your abode.
From the related article: "This isn't a game," Taylor said. She said the registry also would help gay and lesbian couples to be with their partners if they are hospitalized.
Your partner is transported to St. Francis in Topeka...

"Registered Domestic Partnership" in Lawrence, KS"... "So?... Have fun in the North Dakota State Penitentiary"

TOB, I refrained from using "hate" because that is too strong. However, I still believe the majority of Lawrencians would rather not be associated with the values (traditional, conservative, right wing, whatever) they associate with the State of Kansas. [A good percent relate more to the east and/or west coasts -- if not to European political philosophies.]
RETICENT_IRREVERENT (Ronaldo Ignacio) says…
T_O_B,
The City Bainbridge Island is the whole island. The City annexed the whole island sometime back.
So the island Ipso facto is the city.
Centrist (anonymous) says…
acg ... that is a good one!
The_Original_Bob (anonymous) says…
R_I - Ahhh, annexation! Just like Johnson County.
Ceal - Having lived 1/2 my life in rural KS and most of the other 1/2 in Lawrence I'd just say that people that hold that point of view tend to be the same that don't ever venture more than 1 mile off I-70 or the Turnpike assuming they even get out of Lawrence. On the flip side, folks that dislike Lawrence have never been here and thus have terrible assumptions about the gheys and freaks and hippies and loose women with questionable morals.
Basically, it's my tired old 5% argument... there are very small minority that hold extreme views on each side and are very loud and bombastic. Unfortunately, the other 50% too often falls into the trap that the 5% speaks for the other 45%. And you think I could explain my tired old argument better. Ye gods.
I've rarely met a person from outside of Lawrence that does not want to come back to visit. However, I know and from reading the BIG! OTS for the past few years, many many Lawrencians that hate Lawrence.
It's Friday. I don't mean to be contrite with you. You think I would be in a great mood knowing our superhero from the People's Republic walks with us again.

Just seeking clarification:
"it's Friday. I don't mean to be contrite with you."
So you are feeling feeling regret, sorrow, and are seeking atonement for once again bringing up "that gene" issue with Ceal....
"Ceal- On the flip side, folks that dislike Lawrence have never been here and thus have terrible assumptions about the loose women with questionable morals."
But you do not want to feel that way?

Paladin~ Try this: Squeeze a couple of lemon wedges into the coffee pot, dump in a handful of salt, add several ice cubes, shake & swirl (while shimmying around the kitchen intoning, "Friday, Friday, FriDAY!"), then let the pot sit awhile...maybe 10 min. or so. Continued dancing during this time is optional. Give the pot a final smart swirl, rinse thoroughly, and that baby will sparkle--and smell nice. I learned that working as a waitress long ago and far away.
Ceal~ willya look at that--you and I each posted secession suggestions within a minute of each other. I was mainly kidding (like it would/could really happen) and suspect you were too (?), but it's funny to see how earnestly Bob responded to the idea. Bob--make sure you do something laugh-out-loud fun today.

This was a WAAAY long time ago on this thread, but the worry about not being with your partner if he/she is hospitalized is moot. The patient has only to designate you as their "liaison" with the hosp. and you have the same rights to be in the room, etc. as a spouse. I had to do that when my (opposite sex) fiance' was very ill. I would presume that it works the same way for anyone.
Go back to Genesis and read. When Adam got busted by God, what was the first thing he did? Pointed at Eve and said "She made me do it!" Some things never change...
I predict the Anna Nicole saga MIGHT be resolved in time for that poor baby girl's college education.

Daughters of Eve,
"a few whiffs of a chemical found in male sweat is always enough to raise levels of cortisol, a hormone commonly associated with alertness in heterosexual women."
Women who sniffed androstadienone , the chemical found in male sweat, reported a definite improved mood and extremely elevated sexual arousal, and the displayed uncontrollable physiological responses; increased blood pressure, heart rate and panting.
So get any ideas of servitude out of your heads.
Because you would be clobbered by the monkey hammer of love, drawn to men like a moth to a flame, a rat to cheese or a butterfly to butter, thanks to the sweet, sweet androstadienone containing sweat that envelopes men like stink on a skunk ape.
