Do you think the Chiefs can win in Denver without Trent Green?

“I don’t think they can. Their whole offense revolves around him. They would at least need some sort of new leadership.”

Photo of Twyla Crowghost

“No. I’m not sure they could win if they had him.”

Photo of Tony Ford

“I say yes. He’s been playing like a second-string quarterback, so maybe the back-up will be able to get it done if they give him a chance. He should be used to having to prove himself.”

Photo of Adam Warshaw

“No, not in Denver. Their offensive line won’t be able to get them anywhere. That’s the reason he’s hurt.”

The Broncos are as poor offensively this year as the Chiefs. Of course KC can win. But it's not likely....

Richard Heckler 11 years, 9 months ago

Chief fans should know more about this at the end of the fourth quarter.

sgtwolverine 11 years, 9 months ago

Two things:

1)Damon Huard. Not exactly a top-shelf backup. 2)If I remember correctly, Denver has the best home winning percentage of any NFL team.

But hey, sometimes a backup qb plays extremely well for one game. You never know. The Lions have had a number of backup qbs who replaced a starter and played very well for a game or two.

Linda Aikins 11 years, 9 months ago

I don't think Tim should have been asked this question about his brother Trent. Doesn't seem like an unbiased answer.

Now Adam is invisible. What's up with this?

I'm Gootsie and I support this answer.

sgtwolverine 11 years, 9 months ago

TOB, I don't know how it is down there, but in Detroit, it is quite common for the biggest hero of the Lions to be the backup qb. Usually one who hasn't actually taken a snap. We have a long history of first-string qb busts, and of backups who looked really good for one game.

Dave Krieg is the first name to come to mind in the category of Lions Quarterbacks Who Looked Good For One Game. I think he even got a starting job somewhere else because he looked good for one game.

There was another Lion, too. I can't remember his name, but I think he went to Washington after the Lions. I remember that he sustained a mild concussion because he head-butted the stadium wall one time during a game. I think he was celebrating a touchdown.

That is the level of intelligence we have had in Detroit quarterbacks.

christie 11 years, 9 months ago

The Chiefs ( chumps ) like the Royals ( rats ) will lose most of the games because they are pretenders just like everything else in KC.

audvisartist 11 years, 9 months ago

Wasn't Christie one of the Pretenders too? No wait, that was Chrissie.

I actually saw the Chiefs win in Denver without Green. I believe their QB was some Montana guy? So yes, the Chiefs can win in Denver without Green. Their best offense will be Plummer's errant passes.

RonBurgandy 11 years, 9 months ago

Umm...not likely.

Magic 8-Ball what do you say? "Good Luck with that."

OldEnuf2BYurDad 11 years, 9 months ago

1) Plummer will get his act together

2) We probably would have lost WITH Green.

Chief's lose.

Topside 11 years, 9 months ago

NO not if they're going to play Huard. They need to just put Croyle in there and get him some action. He played better than Huard from what I saw in the preseason.

heather5 11 years, 9 months ago

Huard played horrible on Sunday, but hey what else can we expect out of someone who hadn't played except in preseason since what was it like 2000. I also agree I don't think the Chiefs would win with Trent Green the offensive line has to step up which I don't think will happen. Look how many times Huard got sacked or was hurried. It's going to be like every year the Chiefs won't make the playoffs once again. Or if they get lucky and do they will lose in the first game. Last time the Chiefs won a playoff game was when I believe it was when Joe Montana was the quarterback. The Chiefs are a joke and always will be.

SouthernBelle 11 years, 9 months ago

Easy question........Of course the CHIEFS will WIN!!

sgtwolverine 11 years, 9 months ago

TOB, I found it -- the head-butting qb was Gus Frerotte. He played a couple really good games for the Lions when some underachieving Lions qb (oops, that was absurdly redundant) went down with an injury, and then I think the Redskins picked him up the next season.

That, of course, was a mistake.

Berserk 11 years, 9 months ago

No, becuase the Chiefs can't win in Denver regardless of who is QB, plus I think Trent was pretty much doomed this year anyway, hes too old, too slow and we have no offensive line anymore.

Tony Gonzalas pretty much sucks anymore too, what did he get, an average of 34 yds a game all last year.

I was looking forward to getting Ty Law, now I realize the rest of the team is no longer there, maybe we do have a good D now, but our O is bottom of the barrell anymore, and what were they thinking, only one good reciever!?!?!

betti81 11 years, 9 months ago

Tony G does not suck. the reason he had a bad year last year (in my opinion) was because of double and triple coverage and a lack of actually having balls thrown TO him (or in his vacinity). he is still ranked as one of the best TEs in the NFL AND if you watched the game this weekend, after trent went out, TG took up the slack. he layed himself out to catch two poorly thrown passed by the backup, catching, i believe, 4 passing on the touchdown drive AND a TD catch.

yep, sounds pretty worthless. sure wouldn't want that guy on my team...

sorry, i have a soft spot for TG. I am glad to see, what i hope, is the cheifs finally realizing he is their best receiver. boyfriend is a Lions fan. (loves everything detriot). I feel sorry for you guys. did you see charles rogers got a tryout with the dolphins?

Teapot9 11 years, 9 months ago

The Chiefs are arguably the worst franchise in professional sports. They will get smoked in Denver and Dick Vermeil will cry at the podium once again. The only team the Chiefs MIGHT be able to beat are the Oakland Raiders.

conservativepunker 11 years, 9 months ago

God I hope not. I hate football. I just laugh every time the Chefs lose.

RonBurgandy 11 years, 9 months ago

Vermeil? Wow.

Tony Gonzalez doesn't suck, not real sure where you got that one. Last year he had to block a lot of the time b/c of weakness in the o-line. Can't exactly catch a ball when both hands are on a defender. He is still one of the best tight ends in the NFL. I don't see Green being too old or too slow either. He may be getting older, but he is still a good NFL quarterback.

So Teapot, are you saying that the Chiefs are going to have a 2-14 record this year? Because I will take that bet.

Betti - I think that the Chiefs realize that Tony G. is their best receiver, he just usually gets double teamed.

heather5 11 years, 9 months ago

Tony G is a good TE Eddie Kennison is also a very good reciever now we just need an offensive line that can give Trent Green some time to throw the ball. But he is injured for now so we have Huard and a horrible offensive line. I also laugh when the Chiefs lose cuz everyone was talking about how good the Chiefs would be this year because we were getting Ty Law. Well defensive can help win games, but if the offense can't score you won't win either. Everyone says it's because Willlie Rolf retired but that is BS that is one guy and yeah he was awesome, but one person can't do everything. THe Chiefs are doomed to suck again this year.

Teapot: Learn who the coach is before you try and post on here. Do you know how dumb your post sounded?

they are looking to triple troop strength* in Iraq and Afghanistan...send them there......things are not too good over there....get ready for the Selective Service letters....America

*and they dont know how they are going to do that!

Angel Gillaspie 11 years, 9 months ago

Dave "Fumble-aya" Kreig - the Chiefs signed him in 1992. I believe he had the highest number of fumbles of any quarterback ever. He was sacked 7 times in the AFC Wild Card playoff game against San Diego on January 2, 1993. We lost, 17-0. I hated him almost as much as I hated Elvis Grbac. And who could forget Steve DeBergh? In the September 10, 1989 game against Denver, the first pass he threw was intercepted for a touchdown. We lost, 34-20. Sheesh. Trent Green has been a breath of fresh air, I hope he comes back soon... But we'll be lucky to win 6 games this year, I'm sorry to say.

sgtwolverine 11 years, 9 months ago

betti, your boyfriend must be a man of endless patience. That is what the Lions require. At least he has three other good teams to enjoy.

I did not hear about Rogers' tryout with the Dolphins. That would be ironic -- two Detroit first-round picks ending up with the same team. Maybe at some point Harrington would get in a game and get to throw a pass to Rogers.

sgtwolverine 11 years, 9 months ago

agilla, you are correct about Kreig and his slippery hands -- I think he might have set the record for fumbles while he was playing for the Lions. Not sure on that.

Angel Gillaspie 11 years, 9 months ago

Oh, I forgot to mention that Trent Green has some awesome stats - in the current Sports Illustrated, for example, they state that "Green started 80 straight games from 2001-2005, while Kansas City gained more yards (30,470), scored more touchdowns (262) and rushed for more TDs (131) than any other team in the league." And, in addition, "Green's 20,117 yards passing and 111 touchdown from 2001-2005 were exceeded only by Peyton Manning." So, yes, the Chiefs will miss him, dearly. Come back soon, TG!

mom_of_three 11 years, 9 months ago

I remember Dave Kreig - that's when I actually watched football.

Rich Gannon was probably one of the best quarterbacks the Chiefs let get away.

I remember he went in to Steve DeBerg (or was it Joe) when the starter was injured and did great while he was in there. Accomplished more than the starter.

No, I don't see the Chiefs being too successful without Trent Green. They struggle enough with him.

heather5 11 years, 9 months ago

And the Chiefs are so caught up in those stats that I guess they thought he was also invinsible because we don't have sh*t for a backup quaterback. Trent Green is an awesome QB, but it will be tested this year without a decent offensive line to protect him. He will be hurried more than he has in the past years.

Agilla I agree the Chiefs will be lucky to win 6 games.

betti81 11 years, 9 months ago

sarge--ha. yes endless patience...i guess hockey starts soon, so he is excited about that.

i hadn't thought about harrington, how funny. i just keep saying the Lions need a better o-line.

Bone777 11 years, 9 months ago

Rich Gannon never wanted to lead the Chiefs, anyway.
I remember when he had a chance to start, he would hem and haw about how this was Steve Bono's team and he was only a back-up.

The Chiefs won't likely win in Denver, but there are a lot of teams that wouldn't likely win in Denver.

One last thing. Cincinnati played really well.

Bone777 11 years, 9 months ago

When you think of Chiefs quarterbacks of the past, one name should come to mind...

Todd Blackledge

omb: the team must have a gigantic expansion effort underway, those little rascals are all over the place. Can't walk through the yard without being attacked by one.

bangaranggerg 11 years, 9 months ago

The Chiefs best bet to keep the score down is to take a page from the Trent Green playbook and just lay motionless on the field for an hour.

bangaranggerg 11 years, 9 months ago

change the name to .... The Kansas City Possums

i_have_only_valid_opinions 11 years, 9 months ago

It doesn't matter if Plummer sucks ass on Sunday because they will just put in Cutler (who is even better than Plummer). No way the Chiefs will win, with or without Trent Green.

To the person who said they have previously seen the Chiefs win in Denver...obviously not this year, not with the current coach and not with teams identical to what they have now. Denver has a good defense and KC has a piss poor offense. Not a winning combination.

Go Broncos!

sunflower_sue 11 years, 9 months ago

To all of you fair weather fans...I'm w/ my gal Southernbelle. Of course the CHIEFS will WIN! WaaaHoooo! (If enough of us believe it, maybe our team will, too.) How about some encouragement. Go Chiefs! Whip those Colorado ponies!

Ceal, et tu?

They are stallions, sunflower_sue, not ponies (except Plummer, he's a jackass).

youngitized 11 years, 9 months ago

Any team can beat another team on any given day.

beatrice 11 years, 9 months ago

Sure, they can win, but it doesn't matter. The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to repeat as champions once again. Go ahead mortals, try to look upon the Steelers' greatness through the shine of their many championship rings.

Though don't give up hope, KC fans. Perhaps someday in the distant future the Chefs might realize some of the success already realized by the Steelers -- but I personally suspect global warming will destroy the planet before then. I could be wrong. Keep hope alive.

sgtwolverine 11 years, 9 months ago

I always enjoy fans of last year's champion. Thanks, bea.

lunacydetector 11 years, 9 months ago

trent green has the numbers, but when it comes down to crunch time or the money plays - he is over-rated.

perhaps the backup will kick some tail like Warner did after green got hurt in st. louie. we can only hope.

whitetower 11 years, 9 months ago

beatrice, I read all of these posts to get to yours; I didn't realize it at the time... now I know.

I once liked the Steelers... until last years AFC championship that is... Sigh... Now its just a bitter taste.

Can the Chiefs beat the Broncos in Denver? Of course, it's the any-given-Sunday rule, especially if the Chiefs have that special 12th man on Defense. No not the crowd, Jake. Being a Bronco fan I know that Jake sometimes plays a lot of Defense. However, if we look at last year, Jake did the same thing in the opener in Miami then came back and played nigh-perfect the rest of the season... until the aforementioned game. In conclusion we realize hope is not in vain only in low percentages.

beatrice 11 years, 9 months ago

sgt, just to clarify, I have always loved football and have always been a Steelers fan -- even before they had Terry Bradshaw, if you can believe people are still alive from an era so long ago. It is true that they won it all last year (and likely will again this year as I have already mentioned), but I am hardly a band-wagon fan as your post appears to suggest.

Or are you just saying you like fans of last years' champion since last year the Steelers won and clearly any fan of the Steelers is a good person -- is that what you meant? At any rate, Go Steelers!!!

tob: I miss Free State beer. : (

sunflower_sue 11 years, 9 months ago

IHOVO, more like geldings! :P insert horse whinnying sound here

Bea, I'll give you Terry Bradshaw...gotta love that man. But the Steelers??? Oh, I held out so much more hope for you.

RI, et tu?

beatrice 11 years, 9 months ago

tob, alas you are correct. I have made my choice, but did I know I was headed for this?

Okay, yes I did, but it is still horrifying that this stuff is made about a 20 minute drive from my house. (But I do like the movie theaters -- including 2 multi-screen drive ins still in use! I just miss a cold Ad Astra.)

Linda Aikins 11 years, 9 months ago

Prospector, you crack me up!

There was a Lecompton guy on the 1970's Steelers team - Marvin Kellum. I knew him at Wichita State. I loved the Steelers then too!

kcwarpony 11 years, 9 months ago

I remember a game in Denver the Chiefs won! October 1995, big snow storm and Elway couldn't handle a wet ball. What did I do the next day?...I drove on into Denver and on up to Ft. Collins visiting friends and wearing a KC Chiefs jacket! It's a wonder I made it back alive!!

I say 50/50 on Sunday :)

sgtwolverine 11 years, 9 months ago

Doubt this will get read, but...

Oh, no, bea, I wasn't accusing you of being a bandwagon fan. You had given no such indications. I was just saying that I enjoy fans of last year's champion, particularly in the NFL, where repeating is difficult for any team these days. The Steelers are good -- and I must say, I like Cowher -- but your confidence about this season, only one game old, is dangerous. A lot can happen in 16 games!
