Aw Shelby the original's was so repetitive and self-congratulatory. Typical 1970s American music bombast and nothing more :)

tyger_lily 11 years ago

The new Battlestar Galactica on SciFi!!

Bone777 11 years ago

The Courtship of Eddie's Father. I remember this little kid and his dad throwing rocks in the water and that song would start up "Let me tell you about my best friend........."

ms_canada 11 years ago

Favourite theme song. The Peter Gunn song and the theme from a little kids show called Wind In The Willows.

sgtwolverine 11 years ago

Oh, and the Bob Newhart Show theme song has an amazing ability to get stuck in my head for hours at a time. It's really quite remarkable.

jonas 11 years ago

betti: If I'm going solely on theme song, the best would have to be the one for Furi Kuri (FLCL) by the pillows. A few of the Inuyasha songs are great, and the one for Dragonball by the time it gets to the equivelent of american GT segment is wonderfully catchy. Excel saga has a great opening song too. Cowboy bebop has a great one in the American version, but I've heard the japanese one is great, too. And Trigun had a great song, too.

An anime fan, I presume?

oldfashiongirl 11 years ago

Will you allow me to tell you of my favorite old radio broadcast-"The Shadow Knows". It was riveting music.

Last weekend on the way to Alabama I saw a sign of "Davey Crockett museum." We all began singing, "Davey, Davey Crockett, king of the wild frontier." We were sick of it by the time we got to Tuscaloosa.

LJW/OTS, please add my name to those wishing to reinstate One More Bob. While you're at it do the same for "Easy Money."

What ever happened to "KU Law"? Graduated??

jayhawks71 11 years ago

The original Battlestar Galactica theme was not a John Williams (best known for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc) creation.

Stu and Glen Phillips are the composers.

I have always enjoyed anything by Mike Post; He is, by far the most prolific TV theme composer and many have been listed here. Here is just a sampling of what he has done: Hill Street Blues, LA Law, Law and Order, Rockford Files, Wiseguy, NYPD Blue, Greatest American Hero, Magnum PI, A-Team, Doogie Howser MD, etc....

(I think the CSI "themes" are sort of cheating, as they are actually songs that were composed not as themes).

Larry 11 years ago

Wide World of Sports. The Rifleman was good too, especially at the beginning when you hear the sound of bullets flying. "Welcome to North Fork. Check your guns with Micah, and stay a while"

The original Transformers cartoon. They were more than meets the eye!

Ceallach 11 years ago

TOB, I did a "user" search, found everyone I tried, except omb :( I hope they give consideration to our requests for his reinstatement. Sure he can use another name, but hey, he shouldn't have to do that. After all, he's good enough, he's smart enough and dog gone it, people like him :)

I wrote this:

One More Bob was apparently banned and I would like to make a case for his reinstatement. I read most of his post and they were very enjoyable. I am not a part of the LJW staff and I don't consider myself an expert on much of anything, but I was never offended by anything I read. I think that the boards are a lot like a stew and I think that the different spices are what makes it interesting. I am out of state, but have lived and have family in Lawrence, and continue to read LJW on a daily basis. These boards are entertaining because of people like One More Bob, The Original Bob, Beatrice, Marion, Sunshine Sue, Reticent Irreverent, and many more of the regulars. Much of the post are said in jest, and as a regular, I do look to see how the others will respond. One More Bob was very entertaining and I would like to see him reinstated, please!!!!!!!

Dallas. Whenever I would hear that very distinctive beat blaring thru the house on Friday nights it was like a kickoff to the weekend. My mom, sisters and I would curl up in front of the t.v. to see who JR was going to screw over, ruin or sleep with next. I loved that show!

Aileen Dingus 11 years ago

OH! The Animaniacs!!! I sing that one with my kids.

Northern Exposure or Sopranos.

I'm off to Texas! "See" you later!

Ghost78 11 years ago

Tough call ... for current shows, I like the upbeat NCIS opening music, and the manic retro Venture Brothers theme. Classic shows ... definately A-Team.

juscin3 11 years ago

That is a great practical joke. Wonder how many times it played the song over and over again. There are alot of songs that you all have listed on here and the songs go through my brain. Hubby will sing to the kids from time to time "The Facts of Life." They never seen the show, so they look at him like what the heck are you singing?!?!?!? Too funny! I like the song of Good Times and One Day At A Time, Sanford and Son, The Jeffersons. Wish they still show all of them. I do know that they still show Good Times. I tell the kids about that show and they actually seen it a few times and like it. They enjoy watching Fresh Prince...gotta love the Carlton dance! LOL

Shelby 11 years ago

and the ORIGINAL Battlestar Galactica theme song....incredible piece by john williams.

And I absolutely hate the Six Feet Under theme.

I also hate The Wire's theme song, though it's without question the best tv show in the history of television.

jonas 11 years ago

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was great when I was a kid. Haven't had the chance to hear the new one. Other than that, most of them are from Anime's, so I'm probably the only one here who's ever heard them.

Shelby 11 years ago

Repetitive? it's about 3 minutes long. sophisticated variations on a theme. have you no soul?

beatrice 11 years ago

I think it should be a song written specifically for a show, not an existing song that has been plugged into opening credits. For that reason, The Smiths tune used on Charmed is out, same with The Who's song on CSI.

There are a few I can think of that became hits -- Friends, Welcome Back Kotter, The Monkees.

But best TV Theme Song -- Twilight Zone. That simple, little "ding ding, ding ding," let you know you were in for something spooky. I still love it. Second favorite might be Six Feet Under. Again, an other-wordly tune, which is absolutely perfect for the show.

sgtwolverine 11 years ago

I concur with bea. A theme song must be written for the show to be eligible for prizes. Man law!

It should tell you something about our current society that a lot of people know the words to these assorted songs better than our own "National Anthem."

As a practical joke, my last day at a job, I put 5 CD's into the player that had nothing but the Golden Girls theme song in it. "Thank you for being a friend". Took them about a week to find all the CD's in the 60 disk changer.

This question takes me back to simpler times. Gunsmoke,Waltons, Flintstones. I catch myself humming those on a regular basis. If I were to sing a song my fav would be The Brady Bunch and Happy Days and the partridge family. My daycare kids and I sing The Addams Family alot.

jayhawks71 11 years ago

RI, I don't know the answer to your question but Joey Scarbury was the vocalist on the Greatest American Hero theme.

Peter Gunn or Pink Panther. HEHE I like Mancini I guess.

Janet Lowther 11 years ago

Secret Agent had to have had the best theme ever: People would turn it on, listen to the theme, then change the channel. Unfortunately the theme was so much better than the show. IIRC it only lasted one season.

Since I'm celebrating 20 years without a TV, I have never heard a lot of the suggestions. . .

betti81 11 years ago

jonas: anime novice, more like it. FLCL made me late to class few times b/c i had to catch it at like 1 am or something. Inuyasha's is good, but FLCL i like alot.

betti81 11 years ago

jonas: what anime's?

currently on air: 1. sopranos 2. south park (which btw was hilarious last night!) 3. (and because of #2 last night)-Dog the Bounty Hunter--(Ozzy-seriously, need i say more ;)

all time: 1. sopranos

sgtwolverine 11 years ago

Also worth mentioning might be the Animaniacs theme. And Mary Tyler Moore.

Incidentally, when I started buying Magnum P.I. on dvd, I learned that the show didn't start with the famous Magnum theme song. The first season featured a more jazzy, laid-back song. The second season started the famous theme.

They booted OMB? Man, that blows!! He rocked!

I had forgotten about Fraggle Rock. I loved that show when I was a kid.

sunflower_sue 11 years ago

How about ending show song?

"I'm so glad we had this time together..." insert ear tug here (Carol Burnett)

Also love all the Hee Haw songs!

"Gloom, dispair, and agony on me...Woah! Deep dark depression, excessive misery...Woah! If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...Woah! Gloom, dispair, and agony on me!"

"Well, we're not one's to go around spreadin' rumors. Why, really we're just not the gossipy kind. No, you'll never hear one of us repeating gossip... So you better be sure and listen close the first time!"

sunflower_sue 11 years ago

OK, My letter is sent. Hopefully soon we can all sing the theme song to "Welcome Back Cotter" for our OMB.

mom_of_three 11 years ago

Some of the most popular theme songs were written by the same guy - Mike Post. Magnum, P.I., NYPD Blue, the A team, Hunter, CHiPS, Black Sheep Squadron, Riptide, Quantum Leap, Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law,Rockford Files.... I did an Engish assignment in college about tv theme songs.
I like "High Chapparel" which some basketball bands play, and E.R. and Magnum

What's the deal with OMB Day? Can someone fill me in?

sunflower_sue 11 years ago

Theme song for OMB:

Him an' his jokes travelled all through the land an' his speeches made him friends to beat the band His witty criticism was their favorite brand an' everyone wanted to shake his hand One More, One More Bob, helpin' his legend grow!

He knew when he spoke he sounded the knell of his hopes for a laugh and pleather fame as well But he spoke out strong so hist'ry books tell an' patched up the crack in Inmate's cell. One More, One More Bob, seein' his duty clear!

He heard of Houston an' the Astrodome so to the Texas plains he jest had to go Where freedom was fightin' another foe an' they needed him at the OTS, Oh! One More, One More Bob, the man who don't know fear!

Shelby 11 years ago

No, it was kind of obscure...probably didn't last more than one season. It was in a modern setting (at the time), too.

the_seeker 10 years, 7 months ago

in reference to the question from Shelby. ...Does anybody remember an early-80s tv show that was about a white guy in his late 20's or early 30's and an old japanese guy who taught him how to be a ninja?

It was an NBC show called the Master starring Lee Van Cleef.

He also used to star in so-called "spaghetti" western movies. Also even though he isn't in it, you might want to see "Blind Fury" starring Rutger Hauer.
