What would help make Lawrence a more healthy city?

“I would say having more bike paths, so you can really bike through the city for recreation and to get around.”

Photo of Nicole Walters

“I think they need more recreational parks where you can do activities with your friends instead of parks with just a lot of open space.”

Photo of Bryan Reynolds

“I think it has more to do with the individual’s motivation to exercise and eat right. We have all the things we really need. Lots of parks and a health food store. It just takes a little self-discipline.”

Photo of Lexi Welch

“More bike riding trails through the middle of town instead of on the outskirts.”

We could kill off the unhealthy people!

Will this get pulled, I wonder?

Lee Eldridge 8 years, 9 months ago

Let's see. We could outlaw beer, ice cream, hamburgers, french fries, pop, all fatty foods... Can't anyone take any personal responsibility? Oh, I guess that isn't politically correct.

Lee Eldridge 8 years, 9 months ago

A serious answer? We should offer better health education to parents and their children. Most parents don't understand what they're doing to their children when they feed them fast food 5 times a week.

Purell 8 years, 9 months ago

Distribute Purell to the citizens and have a cable Hygeine channel. Quarantine the sick in the hospital with the tall crematorium towers.

More friendly competitions:

Fruitcake Flipping (thanks Liberal KS) The Roundabout Relays Balloon Balancing The Annual Adults for Profanity Run

things like that

What is the deal with so many posters (only one today so far, but we get them on a regular basis) that hate the fact that we spend some time each week posting on this message board? It seems hitme thinks we should only exercise 16 hours a day and do nothing else. Dialogue is not exercise, but it is healthy for our community.

I for one agree with Brian Reynolds. We have what we need in Lawrenceto get fit, we just need to do it.

Linda Aikins 8 years, 9 months ago

I have the fittest fingers in town! That counts.

sgtwolverine 8 years, 9 months ago

Gootsie, there could also be straw house building. What strenuous exercise that would be!

Or everyone could join the Missouri basketball team. That would certainly be an exercise in something.

trinity 8 years, 9 months ago

futility, sgt? ;)

gootsie ya took the words right outta my hands! :p

i agree wholeheartedly with brian reynolds...it isn't that the opportunities aren't available, it's that folks just ain't usin' 'em. i myself am gonna exercise my mind&take an english grammar course, lmaooooo...

sgtwolverine 8 years, 9 months ago

Yeah, trinity, I figured I'd let other people finish the Missouri jokes. I'm more qualified to make Big Ten jokes.

Anyway, since I live near what is sometimes listed among the least healthy cities in the nation (Detroit), I would also echo Brian's answer -- if people don't really want to be healthy, then it doesn't matter what's available.

Expand local farmers markets. Bring in fresh local farm foods to market in Lawrence. Local beef markets and local chicken markets etc.

Encourage new inventions for alternative energy. This should be done on the individual level, not at the college level (they already have their funding). Have a local and online invention fair that could create future jobs in Kansas through these new energy and other inventions. Help line up companies ready to assist new inventors to get a patent and or bring their device to market.

Liberty 8 years, 9 months ago

Also funding for emerging inventors. (They still need to eat while trying to help the rest of us... The funding would help supply materials for the inventor to bring the device to completion.

sgtwolverine 8 years, 9 months ago

Between Ron's Burrito King comment and the smell of freshly-delivered food in my office (some people ordered breakfast), I'm getting kind of hungry.

And when I get hungry, I don't go to a health food store.

Ceallach 8 years, 9 months ago

Lawrence would be a healthier city if all y'all joined me for a cup of coffee -- I will even provide the coin for the machine!! Am I nice -- or what???

After you open the link below:

  1. PUT THE COIN IN THE VENDING MACHINE
  2. CHOOSE YOUR DRINK
  3. CLICK ON THE CUP WHEN IT IS READY
  4. CLICK ON "APRI" **(this one is very important, don't forget!)

TOB: you are a cynical man in a cynical age!

macBeer...LOL! served with MacBeernuts?

ljreader, right on! get a dog, and really spend time with the dog, good for both of y'all.

finally, fix sidewalks, and otherwise make lawrence a more walker-friendly city. walking is great exercise for mind and body. oh, that includes ripping out all the roundabouts by their roots as they needlessly complicate intersections for walkers!
oh, how does hitme know we're not exercising while on OTS? that's awefully presumptious of HITME!

bearded_gnome 8 years, 9 months ago

what I mean, I just don't know how you could be so cynical as to think another ban was in the works...terrible cynicism...

bearded_gnome 8 years, 9 months ago

okay, newsflash, and it might relate to the OTS question.

full bell alert on the teletype!!!

Alert: Santa Cruz CA area police authorities are, this morning, investigating the theft of a "rubber sex doll." police are optimistic they will crack the case.

end alert.

Ceallach 8 years, 9 months ago

These bans are for our own good. We need to trust that the commiss cares deeply for us and for our well-being. They work so hard, spending long hours of investigation and debate to improve our lives and the lives of our fellow Lawrencians. It must be terribly painful to them to know that some of their wards actually question their motivation or competence. I for one want to say thank you and offer them a free cup of coffee.

jonas 8 years, 9 months ago

Yay. Genocide appears to be an acceptable topic for the readers boards!

sgtwolverine 8 years, 9 months ago

Hey, yeah, you could turn Lawrence into the Mackinac Island of Kansas -- no motorized vehicles. I bet everyone would love that.

kansas_prairieland 8 years, 9 months ago

I agree, Bowhunter!

Yes, it's true, there is a lot of bad food in this world.....but ultimately it's about personal responsibility.

You know, if tomorrow everyone woke up and discovered that there was only good, healthy food in the world......there would still be fat people all around us!! They'd be pigging out on fruits and veggies and whatever else they could shove in their mouths in large volumes!!

I once saw a lady in front of me in gracery store and her shopping cart was full of weight watchers frozen food! I mean it was packed with wieght watchers food! And what was funny about it was the fact that she had "weight watchers eclairs" "weight watchers cupcakes" "weight watchers pizza" etc. etc.

It was obvious to me that although this woman was trying to cut her calorie consumption....she still wasn't willing to give up what was basically junk food that she had stuffed in her cart!!

And by the way........I think that the site moniters zapped "Black Monolith".

Gee, I don't think anyone on this board ever said so little....and got zapped for good!!

So long, BM....we hardly knew ye!!

sunflower_sue 8 years, 9 months ago

Cea, Thanks for the cup 'o joe. Don't know if it's a coinkidink but there is a fashion monkey out there named "Joe." He's on everything from socks to hats. And now, apparently, he's in our favorite beverage???

Lawrence a more healthy city: This is a very simple ? to answer. We need to ban everything that uses gas. We need to ban all delicious food. We need to ban all desk jobs and just live to survive. Plow up the yard and grow our own food. Get the kiddies to weaving their own cloth to make their own clothes. Heck, make the kids do everything because after the age of 30, we need our rest. Excuse me while I go sanitize my hands. Someone may have breathed in the direction of my keyboard recently and you just can't be too careful!

Linda Aikins 8 years, 9 months ago

Hi to you too C1!

Good one, Hannibal. Are humans red meat or white meat?

hits another monkey in the head with a bone club

"My God, it's full of stars..."

Sorry, that's just been running through my head since that person started posting. Had to get it out.

What will make Lawrence a healthier city? Well, as others have said, when the people who live in it decide to make healthy lifestyle choices a priority in their lives.

What can Lawrence do to promote or encourage it? Well, they could offer better nutrition classes in the schools (for example, teaching about how to eat healthy when the only options are fast food, or how to cook healthy meals that are neither bland nor vile), and when they get requests from people who are living healthy lifestyles, then they should consider those before looking at things that might encourage the unhealthy to become so. For example, there have been a lot of requests from the cycling community for certain trail improvements. A dynamic community that participates in and promotes an activity is a lot better incentive for involvement than just the existence of facilities or equipment put in with the hope that they will nudge folks into using them just by existing.

You know, some of the 'perfect pill' diets are dumb, but some work. Weight Watchers and several others all work by teaching healthy food and exercise habits and clearly lining out the amount of work that you need to make your body do to consume a certain amount of food. I know, for example, that a Snickers bar is 2-3 miles on the treadmill. If someone's not willing to get into the idea of building a balanced diet with a steady caloric intake and regular exercise, the programs won't work. But, if someone is committed to the weight loss and just doesn't have the skills to build a diet and exercise program, then those programs are great because they provide support and structure. Any weight loss program can be good or bad depending on how it's followed and implemented.

HAL_9000 8 years, 9 months ago

Dave, may I remind you that there are many people in the world who suffer from obesity.

acg 8 years, 9 months ago

Make people healthy? If people want to be healthy, that's awesome. If they don't, that's there own damned problem. Why would I give a crap if someone decides to spend all of their time stuffing their fat pie holes? And, whoever is going to say it, you can spare me the whole "health care costs, government supported programs that pay disability to the obese, blah blah blah" nonsense because that s**t isn't ever going to change and we all know it. Truth is, people are weak. Most of us have a vice, whether or not they want to admit it. The difference with fat people is, their vice is visible and we can all judge them for it.

sunflower_sue 8 years, 9 months ago

Silence, not true. The Germans just did a study and they found that the best way to stay healthy was to get mad.

sgtwolverine 8 years, 9 months ago

Wait, I thought the Germans stayed healthy by drinking.

RonBurgandy 8 years, 9 months ago

Wolverine - I thought that was the Irish.

sunflower_sue 8 years, 9 months ago

manly_essence, we are all glad that you control the rate at which you "let off steam." It's all about control. ;)

sgtwolverine 8 years, 9 months ago

Ron - as a Michigan fan, I accept any opportunities to take a jab at Notre Dame (the Frightened Irish, as I call them). Thank you for your consideration.

What I have learned on OTS today: German alcohol is for physical health; Irish alcohol is for mental health. Drink both, and you'll be all-around healthy!

Confrontation 8 years, 9 months ago

I think we should get rid of all dogs. They leave their urine and feces all over town. I guess we should get rid of the humans who do the same.

samsnewplace 8 years, 9 months ago

How about finding a home for all those homeless that like to sleep/camp-out in front of the nice stores on Mass. street? It is very embarassing to have the City lined with homeless all the time, and MOST ALL choose to be homeless. That is my suggestion.

Prod_The_Goat 8 years, 9 months ago

I have the solution to this problem, as well as to the problem of making Lawrence more entertaining: Make the unhealthy ones fight to the death in front of the public! In fact, why stop with Lawrence? Let's spread that trend all over the world!

HAL_9000 8 years, 9 months ago

Good idea, Prod.

Oh, and Prod, if I may, with reference to a post you made yesterday afternoon....a "Briton" is someone who is either a native or an inhabitant of Great Britain.

Enjoy the rest of your day, Prod.

sgtwolverine 8 years, 9 months ago

Uh oh. Don't tell me we're going to have a homeless debate now.

brainfodder 8 years, 9 months ago

In some cities there are parks that have exercise stations along a walking path. "Do 10 pull ups on this pull up bar" or "Do 10 push ups then jump up and tag this sign 10 times." They are simple, require no gym memberships, and could be built along any of the existing walking paths in town. I'm sure there's even some zealous graduate student who would love to make that a thesis project. It would be something that a family could do together to encourage adults and kids to both lose the pounds.

Confrontation 8 years, 9 months ago

I'd like to see a YMCA in Lawrence. It would be a lot better than spending money on these overcrowded and overpriced gyms.

super_b 8 years, 9 months ago

We had something like what brainfodder mentioned in my hometown. People walked around a track that surrounded a pond and every so many feet there would be a station with a specified activity. It was pretty easy for the regular walkers to add one or two of them into their routine.

Linda Aikins 8 years, 9 months ago

I don't think e_m is the same as our previous e_m either.

sgtwolverine 8 years, 9 months ago

I think the brownies made everyone forget about the question.

And in a bizarre twist, this question has actually inspired people to give answers.

Ceallach 8 years, 9 months ago

Yeah! Where is our extreme, extra, even, etc??? Make yourself known, man! Don't make us come and get you -- remember, I know where you live :):)

sgtwolverine 8 years, 9 months ago

Okay, there's a tornado watch for my area now. Could you guys stop being so generous with your weather?

sgtwolverine 8 years, 9 months ago

Oh, and if you send this beloved Katie Horner to cover our tornado watch, I may have to call the National Guard.

sgtwolverine 8 years, 9 months ago

Multi, does "late-breaking" mean they're always the last ones to have the news?

kcwarpony 8 years, 9 months ago

How about bike paths and decent sidewalks to places people NEED to go to, instead of leading everyone around in circles and getting nowhere. When I was a much younger pony, I would trot off to the grocery store for my mother two or three times a week:but now that I think about, that means SHE was avoiding the exercise herself! Geez: Anyway, the sidewalks are so bad carrying a bag or two makes its dangerous to maneuver around all the pit falls. The city needs to be the one to fix the sidewalks.

Ceallach, I knew there was some reason why I can't stand coffee!! Not even the smell of it and I don't want to know how they get the foam on top!

Confrontation 8 years, 9 months ago

I think the city should have its own bike program, like the one that failed at KU. You take a bike and leave it in a designated area. We'd have to add devices to the bikes that would make the bikes explode if they head out of town or into the Yellow House.

sgtwolverine 8 years, 9 months ago

Exploding bikes! Somebody should make a movie from that concept.

Ceallach 8 years, 9 months ago

I just wanted to enlighten my fellow OTSers about the reason so many people need to use cream and sugar, splenda, equal [in their coffee that is :]

sgt: with Katie you can't even call out the guard, she will have them taking cover too!

kcwarpony 8 years, 9 months ago

MD, you asked for links on the wetlands/SLT issue. Did you see them? I'd been meaning to post those but never got around to it. Thank for the swat on the ole rump!

Ceallach 8 years, 9 months ago

Hey now!! Rump swatting could start the comment deletions again :-P

kcwarpony 8 years, 9 months ago

I was going to say rump roast but then bearded_gnome's recipe came to mind so I thought I'd better leave that alone. Some people actually like horse meat.

Oops, that didn't sound right either:

MississippiFrog 8 years, 9 months ago

You are so lucky to have sidewalks so you have the option to walk across town if you wanted to. Strange to say, but that is one of the things I miss the most from Lawrence. Down here in the South, they don't believe in sidewalks or curbs. No wonder folks are so obese down here.

Linda Aikins 8 years, 9 months ago

E_M I don't know what to think anymore!

Grundoon Luna 8 years, 9 months ago

We have 3 free gyms in this town: the Community Building, Holcomb Sports Complex, and the East Lawrence Center, and there are tons of places to go walking. I made use of them frequently before I had my last child and my current job that is very, very demanding of my time. I have to mange the adult males in my house better (i.e. make them help me . . . pfffft I should just go on strike!!) so I can have time to make use of those faciliteis again.

Bucked out of bed? It's pretty hilarious if you of your companion don't get hurt.

sunflower_sue 8 years, 9 months ago

Community bldg + racketball = a fun, free workout!

I hear some of you are talking about other workouts that are also fun and free. Just bear in mind that all can have sports related injuries that are not fun or free. :-Q

RonBurgandy 8 years, 9 months ago

Stretching is always a necessity to help prevent injuries...

Ceallach 8 years, 9 months ago

Happy Friday, folks! I have a very exciting evening planned and can hardly wait to get started! My g-baby (8 years old) and I are going to see "Ice Age II." Promises to be fun, the first one was really a hoot!! Do I know how to have a good time or what????

mztrendy 8 years, 9 months ago

at every roundabout, make people get out and run 5 laps!

sunflower_sue 8 years, 9 months ago

mztrendy, when I was a goofy teenager, we used to do that at stoplights. Used to horify my poor mother. She should have driven off and left us!

sunflower_sue 8 years, 9 months ago

I didn't grow up in Tongie...but I met a super-gorgeous, couldn't live w/out him guy who did! (Go figure!)

sunflower_sue 8 years, 9 months ago

Oh, and the hubby says he thinks they might have had one but he can't really remember. (Too many beers ago.)
