What do you think of Missouri selecting Mike Anderson as head coach?
Asked at Massachusetts Street on March 27, 2006
“I think anybody will be better than Quin Snyder.”
“He’s definitely going to improve their program, but we’re still going to be better. We’ll still have our papers to make fun of them.”
“It’s good. Competition is a good thing. A bad MU team didn’t adequately prepare us for the tournament. Maybe a good one will.”
“Hopefully he will improve their program, because they’ve had some tough times over the last few years.”

I am excited about it. I think he will improve Mizzou just as he did at UAB. As the Big 12 gets stronger, KU will have to continually improve its game. For an article about Anderson see: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/st...
I hope K-State's new coach improves their play as well. He has too much scandal surrounding him for my liking, but we can hope that those problems are behind him.
I am most excited about watching KU play next year. We will get more consistent with age, and hopefully we will pick up some great recruits as well.

I think perhaps Shannon underestimates just how bad a coach can be.

should be a lot of low scoring defence oriented games...
RonBurgandy (anonymous) says…
Why do you think that they are going to be low scoring games? Yeah they play defense, but it is the 40 minutes of hell version, there is a lot of movement. They averaged 75 points a game, which is pretty much equal to us this year. Low scoring, in my mind, is OU basketball, where if you can score 70+, you are pretty much guaranteed a win.
I like Mike Anderson, but I really don't like to see Missouri do well. I want the other north teams to improve to give us better competition, not them.

I'm guessing one of Missouri's main goals is simply to have a coach who will run a clean program. For their sake, I hope they hired a guy who actually knows how to run a program, period. After Steve Fisher's ugly departure (nobody around here likes to talk about Chris Webber anymore), Michigan hired a totally clueless coach who ran the program even deeper into the ground.
Of course, Michigan's interim athletic director at the time was more clueless than his chosen basketball coach.

I would love to see an NCAA division 1 curling tournament! But first there actually need to be collegiate curling teams ... are there any in existence in the U.S.?

There must be some...

I think it's great. Every time KU played his UAB team, he was thrown out of the game and cried. Granted, we only played them once, but I think it's a sure bet to happen every time we play Missouri.

I'm not big on affirmative action, but it is 2006 and Missouri has just hired it's first black coach in any sport. Congratulations!

I see the state of Michigan has not embraced curling like Minnesota and Wisconsin have. I saw only one Michigan school in that list. (And Michigan Tech is way, WAY up north.) This saddens me.

was that "curling" or "hurling?" now, there's a great college sport, especially for saturday nights.

If you remember from Bill Self's first year at KU, we played and whooped Mike Anderson's UAB team in the sweet 16. They pressed like crazy, and I have a feeling that the new Tiger team will press like crazy too.

The No. 1 reason for having a university?
So the fans will have somewhere to hang out between basketball games.

Anyones gotta be better than Quinn. Does anyone else think he looked like he was gonna stroke out right there on the courtside? I am surprised the AD still has a job, but it is still business. If he brings in the cash it doesn't matter what he does.

Fisher is gone from Michigan, but he's not gone -- and he was even back in the tournament this year. He's coaching San Diego State. I had to look twice when I first saw him on the bench there. I'd forgotten that he had another job.

"I thought he was lower class than Billy Tubbs."
Why not just say he fornicates with juvenile goats?

Given the amount of money involved in the sporting program in question, I'd hardly call it a 'non-event'. It's not as significant as, say, who the Prime Minister of England was in 1938, but the management of the large-dollar decisions like this one at a major university has an impact on enrollment, alumni donations, and overall revenue for the school, and so it is an issue to be aware of.
I do hope this coach is better at keeping his players in line in general, though I can't say bad behaviour hasn't been a trend for quite some time.
It might be nice if MU could, well, stop putting thugs in play. A good three-point shot doesn't balance out reprehensible character, sexual harrassment, drug use, vandalism, or just general social bullying of fellow students.
sgtwolverine (anonymous) says…
Careful, TOB -- some might actually say that. I tend to temper my reactions somewhat, and I also tend to direct it towards Webber. Fisher was guilty more of ignorance than anything (not keeping track of his players well enough).

Sakuraba (anonymous) says…
Actually spacystaci8, I think the AD got sacked. On the news it said that they fired him right after he hired Anderson. It caused a little controversy because it technically voided the deal with Anderson. They imediately re-offered it to him, but he could have got out of it if he wanted to.
RonBurgandy (anonymous) says…
Sakuraba - that must have been a what-if situation. Alden is still the AD at Missouri, I believe.
