“Oh, heavens no. I have family visiting from Alaska, and we told them that it would be in the 70s here, but they feel like they’re at home. So our family reunion is not what we expected.”

“No, it doesn’t. It’s rainy and crappy, and it’s about to snow.”

Photo of William Harlow

“No, and I’m from Tucson, Arizona, where it’s 70 degrees and sunny. So no, this feels like winter to me.”

Photo of Aimee McCauley

“Oh no, not at all. This weather is sick, and it’s depressing me.”

Does today feel very much different than, say, yesterday?

Uh. . . no.

We had a great winter. It had to get crummy sometime.

Still, it's Bush's fault.

I'm sorry, but this question is worse than some of the others. WHAT kind of answer do you expect?
"Yes, it feels like spring to me. Spring is all about snow."

neopolss 12 years, 3 months ago

Glad the "hype" turned out to be a dusting. Don't the news channel people complain no matter what the weather is? They complain about lack of rain, and then complain when they actually get it. They complain that it is too cold, and complain it is too hot when it warms up. Forget watching weather - I'm going back to using the window.

Up here, it was 19 degrees this morning. However, it does not suck to live here.

However, I have been wondering why the "first day of spring" isn't just a couple weeks later. Quite often, it seems it's cold up here on the ersatz first day of spring.

trinity 12 years, 3 months ago feels like kansas, is about all i can say; and i agree, it doesn't suck to live here, i rather love it! :)

and i agree with neo-the window is the best weather forecast there is; the ten o'clock news last night was a hoot on channel 5 at least, they were trying SO hard to keep the hysteria going even though the predictions had changed&the storm diminished...that was funnny!

I do love watching local news teams try to induce panic. You would think Michigan is used to snow, but early in winter I get a good chuckle out of watching local news (Detroit stations) act like two or three inches of snow is going to bring the area to a halt. That does happen in places, but come on, tv people, we get snow every year. Get over it.

trinity 12 years, 3 months ago

"snow" news is better'n NO news?? :)

hey, i'm me today, whaddya know?!

imagold 12 years, 3 months ago

My family has figured out that the weatherfolks are in cahoots with the grocery stores. Predict a huge snowfall when you know it may snow a little. Listeners panic and run to the grocery store to stock up on milk and water, etc. The grocers slip a little bill to the weatherfolk and the weatherfolk use the extra green to pay for the wonderful dopler and ESP forecasting computer systems. Simple.

The start of all the seasons in the year are based on the equinox and solstice. Doesn't have anything to do with how the weather is.

RonBurgandy 12 years, 3 months ago

All I know is it is Spring now, and now I have to pay my damn taxes. So depressing...Spring was a lot better when I got a refund.

craigers 12 years, 3 months ago

No, it didn't really feel like Spring, but about a month ago, it didn't feel like winter. I guess the OTS just figured out 4 of their questions for the the year. They only have to pick 361 more.

acg 12 years, 3 months ago

Hey Sgt, what part of MI do you live in? I lived in Algonac for four years. I think it's beautiful up there. BTW, this is one of the dumbest OTS questions I've ever seen. I'm not even going to dignify it with a response.

sgtwolverine 12 years, 3 months ago

Yeah, I know first days of seasons aren't defined by the weather, but realistically, we define seasons by the weather. It may technically be spring, but it won't actually be spring for anyone until things start turning green and it's warmer outside. In that sense, we really need two first days of spring: actual and perceived.

Hey, send Horner on up here. I'm always up for a good laugh. It's always fun to see what serious title they're going to give some storm ("Blizzard 2006! Watch out, Dennis Quaid is on his way to New York to save his son now! It's going to be rough!" Maybe even 4 inches! Stay tuned as we save your lives.")

I also am amused that we expect to be able to really accurately predict something like the weather. Sometimes the weather is just going to be like George Mason, and a lot of people are going to be wrong.

Feels like spring to me.

Of course, they tell me here that this isn't spring, because 'spring' is supposed to be 80.

However, where I am it's 65 degrees and sunny, with a light balmy breeze and some fluffy clouds.

Right about now, all I miss about Kansas is some nice people and March Mustard Madness.

Lib_ee12 12 years, 3 months ago

Having crazy weather is one of the things I LOVE about Kansas!! Isn't it awesome when you get that unexpected two or three day vacation because of an icestorm in April?? I agree with Neo though, the news people can never enjoy the weather.

I have a beef with this online newspaper though. I have no problem with my internet connection loading any other website, but I can't read the news! If I'm lucky I can get the headlines to load, but it takes several minutes for the story to load. I'm a little peeved their webmaster can't do a better job. At least I'm myself today though! (It was fun to invade other names though)

I live just west of Ann Arbor. Southeastern Michigan can get a little bit repetitive; all the Detroit suburbs (of which Ann Arbor is not one) can blur together a little bit. But you are right: the thumb area and northern Michigan are beautiful.

Michigan trivia: the Detroit Zoo is not in Detroit, but is in Royal Oak. I think they should call it the Royal Oak Zoo. (Especially now that Detroit has tried to shut down the zoo because they say they don't have the money to run it.)

sgtwolverine 12 years, 3 months ago

I couldn't get this to load for several hours. It wouldn't load at all, or it would load very slowly, and then only once (I couldn't post). Now it seems to be back.

As far as flinging poo ... well, I do that only when absolutely necessary.

avhjmlk 12 years, 3 months ago

And what's more, none of us actually know each other (save for the few who got the lucky joy of meeting ms_c when she was down our way--not I, said the duck)

craigers 12 years, 3 months ago

I have to agree with you all because the loading on this website some days is great and then other days it takes 5 minutes to load and then by that time you have an error message that comes up. I don't know what the deal is, but it is annoying sometimes.

RonBurgandy 12 years, 3 months ago

Can someone explain this "drudge" people are talking about?

avhjmlk 12 years, 3 months ago

It's not the size of the ship, it's the motion of the ocean...

avhjmlk 12 years, 3 months ago

Or, I guess, it's not the size of the "clip"...

Linda Aikins 12 years, 3 months ago

TOB I'm off to SW Kansas this week. Lucky me, huh!

Any relatives or unclaimed children you want me to say hello to for you?

badger 12 years, 3 months ago

Funny, I thought it was less about clip size than about getting its full contents into a well-placed nice tight group?

avhjmlk 12 years, 3 months ago

You totally killed our "gutter brain"-type conversation line. Way to go, omb!

badger 12 years, 3 months ago

TOB, were you responding to Gootsie or to me?

Confrontation 12 years, 3 months ago

Oh, no! The weather is depressing Aimee! We better get her some pills!

avhjmlk 12 years, 3 months ago

Watch out for the side effects of some of those pills... :)

Linda Aikins 12 years, 3 months ago

Big Well it is! I'm going to Liberal too.

Linda Aikins 12 years, 3 months ago

I will be going through Guymon from Shattuck OK to Liberal, so I will do what you ask! And I will bring a cotton nightgown and hang it on my antenna, just for you.

I will have my camera with me too!

multi...about the youtube site..I saw it earlier today. robots boys were funny. I went back just now.

You know, they've added more videos. At the moment that site should be avoided by persons:

With high blood pressure. Perhaps those supporting Intelligent Design. Definitely don't take the kiddies.

Those without a significant other at hand, or even if you do perhaps..sure, go ahead, get your kicks. I think this has something to do with the earlier magazine discussion.

bearded_gnome 12 years, 3 months ago

wow, the ots question SUCKS! aimee needs to get a grip.
as to the side-effects of those meds for that, sometimes it IS the side-effects we really want.

okay, Multi, you from w/OK/? in the handle, or before you get there? there's a little town out there, a county seat, where I think most of the citizens have some distant relation to my blood line. aunt and a bunch of cousins live there still and the uncle was the head lawman there for that county for a while.

that mission you're sending Gootsi on, I think she could require backup?

does it feel like the first day of spring? LAME!!! uh, yeah, certainly, so what. spring is not a state of mind, neither is it an environmental condition but an expression to denote seasonal divisions.
tomorrow's OTS question: how did you survive the first day of spring? LOL.

bearded_gnome 12 years, 3 months ago

if OMB keeps on taking down the humor here, I think he needs to become our ljw correspondent on the falkland islands' beat. and, there, we'll just give him dial-up internet access.

bearded_gnome 12 years, 3 months ago

inmate: I'm all for parcimony, and oppose prolixity, but, well, "no" what???

ms_canada 12 years, 3 months ago

My of my - spring, what is that? I wonder if we will be seeing spring this year. I think we will go from winter to summer in one jump. Fri - Sat. we had a record snow fall of 11 inches. 22 centimeters. Do you believe that? So many people getting stuck it was unbelievable. The only saver is, it is not cold. Yes multi fellow, ms_c actually visited your fair city and had the most wonderful time. Ceallach was my delightful hostess as was sunny sue. I met fangorn, azure attitude who is a fellow Kate Bush fan and I met bearded gnome and mrs. gnome, a delightful couple and that rascal extra mustard. I saw much of your city and loved it.
BTW - where has e_m gone anyway. Don't you all miss him?

Linda Aikins 12 years, 3 months ago

hep me! oh hep me!

(just practicing for my mission)

If I get in a bind, I'll just signal a large B to the sky, and Captain Bringdown can come save me in his 1973 Volvo. His weapon of choice? Well, a fruitcake and a lecture on the virtues of Gomer Pyle, of course!
