Drunken idiots trying to park on my property.....drunken idiots smashing bottles up and down the street.....drunken idiots being drunken idiots everywhere I look......YAY! Buddha predicts a 50-60% record with a crappy bowl game ....which we lose...

jonas 11 years, 9 months ago

Meh. I am interested to see if we continue to improve, but I'll be checking results in headlines in the UDK, not at the game.

cutny 11 years, 9 months ago

Oh yes! Let's gear up for another sub-par .500 season and a minor bowl invitation. Go Hawks!!!

sgtwolverine 11 years, 9 months ago

Blue, it's an extension of the local high school teams.

Okay, sorry. I live in a place where football is the undisputed king of college sports. Up here, this sort of question would be more likely to be asked about basketball, since it's a given that there are thousands of people looking forward to football season.

thomgreen 11 years, 9 months ago

"2-8-1-3-3-1-8-0-0-4, hit Mike Jones up on the low......"

I think Lauren sums up how most of this town feels about KU Football, just something to do until basketball season starts. It's a shame, they are becoming a progressively better team each year. Mangino has brought back a sense of respect at least when you think of KU football. I don't think we scare anyone, but we're not seen (to the majority of teams) as the patsy we used to be. At least the KU/K-State game isn't considered the "Toilet Bowl" anymore.

sgtwolverine 11 years, 9 months ago

Just remember, thom, Duke/Northwestern is the SAT Bowl.

CAN YOU ALL SAY..........K.S.U WILDCATS ! ! ! ! ...... peaches ducks as she leaves the post room humming the K STATE fight song......

Jayhawk226 11 years, 9 months ago

Well....while my skin still crawls a tad hearing that........not nearly as bad as "GO BIG RED, GO BIG RED" least we are spared of their RV-entourage this season. Those people scare me. It's honestly like a road-trip style of Deliverance.

theDudeAbides 11 years, 9 months ago

If you enjoy football in the least, you should go support the Jayhawks. They are obviously not a great force to be reckoned with, but they have shown steady improvement.
People also need to quit complaining about the poor season records and crappy bowls. A 6-6 record and a bowl game win, is a heck of a lot better than what some schools accomplished last season (see K-State). Basketball is king here, but I would like the school/town get behind the football team as well. You don't build a powerhouse in a year or two, and while I don't see this team contending for a national title anytime soon (if ever), they have a real shot at competing for the North crown on a regular basis.

smiles 11 years, 9 months ago

Go Jayhawks - we always have fun at the games!!

GO VOLS!! We wish we could go to more games!!

BDub 11 years, 9 months ago

I'm 100% excited about the KU football team and I think this is going to be a great year. They are young but talented and hungry. I think they will have a winning season and could contend for the North title. The naysayers here are not giving Mangino and the team the credit they deserve for steady improvement with very tough schedules. Those of us who have been loyal to the team through the difficult years know how far they've come and that we've got a lot more good things ahead. Those who haven't - go ahead and hop on the bandwagon now so you can say you were here in the days before we won the Big 12 crown. Bottom line - Jayhawk football is going to be a lot of fun this year.

sgtwolverine 11 years, 9 months ago

Dude, here in Ann Arbor, it works the opposite way. Football is king, and it seems nearly impossible to get the town behind the basketball team. Especially after the Fab Four scandal and the lousy years after that fallout. They've started winning games now, just narrowly missing out on the NCAA tournament last season, but it seems like the town is very slow to get behind the team. It seemed like it was a real struggle to fill the arena, even when they were at the top of the conference. It's frustrating, even for me as a football fan.

RonBurgandy 11 years, 9 months ago

First off, there really isn't a "crappy" bowl game. Yeah, the lower bowls are as exciting as the New Years Day bowls, but if you have to start by making the lower tier bowl games. These bring in more recruits, which bring better records, which leads to invites to bigger bowls.

All I can hope is that we are allowed by the NCAA to play in a bowl this year. And of course I am excited about the new season, it is football, enough said.

RonBurgandy 11 years, 9 months ago

meant to say "Yeah, the lower bowls are NOT as exciting...

OldEnuf2BYurDad 11 years, 9 months ago

All you have to do is read these posts to know who has been going to games and who hasn't. The naysayers want to sound like they have a clue (cutny is their leader), but their posts clearly demonstrate that they have no idea how good this program is. We had the #3 defense in ALL of Div. I football last year! How can that be true, and all your sorry posts also be true?

Mangino has strong winning records over KSU and MU. They broke a 35 year losing streak over Nebraska with an amazing performance of pure domination (if you weren't there, you you have no idea what it was like). Mangino is recruiting the best of the Kansas high school talent, and is even attracting some 3-star players from Texas.

Winning a minor bowl is an amazing achievement for a traditionally non-football program that was still rebuilding and spent most of the season with significant quarterback issues. This is an exciting program to watch develop and grow. If you aren't watching them play, then your opinions about their abilities are mere guesses.

OldEnuf2BYurDad 11 years, 9 months ago

Mark my words: we win 7 games this year.

BDub HAS been going to games.

Burgandy is right: when so many teams in our region are NOT going to bowls, then our "crappy" bowl win (also a dominating performance) really means a lot. Doing it in Texas was another added plus.

ANY bowl win matters. If we go 5-0 at the start of the season (could happen, not likely), we'll get votes for a national ranking. If/when we break into the top-25, what will you all say then?

Tad Shurtz 11 years, 9 months ago

Wow, there's a-whole-lotta stupid going on in here. To all the haters: Mike Rivera will eat you, then poop you out.

Good day, and go 'Hawks, h4

sgtwolverine 11 years, 9 months ago

I just want to see you trash Nebraska again. Us Michigan fans have absolutely no love for Nebraska. Seeing them lose so badly was truly a joy.

Kristen Murphy 11 years, 9 months ago

Blah - good to see K-State support up there...What a moron...

GO CATS! I love the new ads with Coach Blueberry...err...Mangino..Gets me all excited for K-State Football!!

sunflower_sue 11 years, 9 months ago

I'm waving the wheat, I'm so darned excited!

Jayhawk226, "roadtrip style Deliverance" Now that's funny! (And eerily true.) Squeal piggy!

OldEnuf2BYurDad 11 years, 9 months ago

IF we can beat Neb. again, we will get a LOT of notice. But... that will be the hardest game of the season, and our first conference game with a team that will probably still be trying to get it's footing. IF we can beat them... that would be good on sooooo many levels.

I wonder if we will get much of a road-game crowd heading to Lincoln for the game? It would be nice to have a big blue section there!

OldEnuf2BYurDad 11 years, 9 months ago

"Gets me all excited for K-State Football!!"

Exactly WHICH aspect of the program excites you? You have YEARS of rebuilding ahead of you!!

BS20 11 years, 9 months ago

I am so excited for football season! Waking up at 7am going down to the stadium, getting hammered until the 12 o'clock game starts. Oh yes!!! And some will say stupid drunk college students, well just remember we are what brings that stadium to life!

Ceallach 11 years, 9 months ago

Peaches, peaches, peaches. Of course we can say, KSU Wilcats . . . we're just sooo happy that we don't have to :):)

Does anyone out there remember POPP, as in Purple Power?

I enjoy the rivalry aspect of football season. For most people the rivalry between KU and KSU is just for show and done in fun. But when UN comes to town they hit like the Red Plague. Those folks need another hobby, they take their gang . . sorry, I meant team, they take their team and themselves waaaaay to seriously.

Also, during games is a great time to do your Saturday shopping. The game is playing as you walk the aisles, watching everyone stop in their tracks during a tense time, then return to their grocery list.

Off topic: went to the Royals game last night. It ended much better than it began!!!! The first inning fiasco nearly cleared the seats. But their comeback was terrific! They were also handing out Monarch t-shirts and to top it off . . . 12 hits, which = every ticket is worth a dozen doughnuts at a Krispy Kreme. Yum!!

Kristen Murphy 11 years, 9 months ago

"Exactly WHICH aspect of the program excites you? You have YEARS of rebuilding ahead of you?"

Umm....We only lost a few seniors last year compared to KU losing a ton of defense...KU's all excited about their season - why can't K-State be excited with a new coach?! KU obviously was with Mangino. We finally have someone in there that isn't going to be conservative like Snyder...Get your facts straight before judging our excitement..I don't know why KU gets excited every year, but they seem to EVERY year. It's funny - you've beaten us once in how many years? Even we're keeping our mouths shut during basketball - why? Because K-State beating KU was a fluke...As for the glory days being over - they will never be over. Win a Big XII championship and then we'll talk.

Larry 11 years, 9 months ago

sgtwolverine - been to Michigan stadium. Incredible environment. One of the best and huge! Wow!

OldEnuf - Right on. I've been attending games at KU for years and years and the current program has me as excited as ever. The consistent improvement in all aspects of the program have me excited. Give Mangino a few years to show the fans that his program will win consistently and the fans will be fighting for tickets. The problem is that we've been through too many coaches who got our hopes up only to let us down. Never consistent winners. Gottfried, Mason, Bud Moore, Rodgers and even Fambrough (as much as I like the guy). For the first time in a long while, I think we are headed in the right path. Go Hawks.

Oh - and the tailgating will be great as always.

Larry 11 years, 9 months ago

Humm K-Stater - I think KSU could beat KU every year from here on out and there is a chance that I'll be dead before they tie KU in wins for the all time win/lose record. By the way - which BIG 12 school has never won a national title in any sport? Obviously NU, OU, the Big T, Colorado, have won. Baylor - Yup. T. Tech, OSU, MU, ISU, and KU - yup. That leaves one. Let's see. Who is it? Oh yes - why is is the kittens from K-State. Wait a second. I forgot. You do have that impressive debate championship sign posted on I-70. Forgot about that one. My apologizes.

By the way - did any of you see the quote from KSU's very own offensive lineman - Greg Wafford regarding KU's ability to replace the Big 12's second-best defense. "All I know is when we go down there, we're going to win. It doesn't matter who they put out there, we're going to be ready to play." Whew hooooooo - the war is on. I can't wait to see the kittens cry about getting screwed on some bogus call or how if some player hadn't been hurt or blah blah blah. Go Hawks.

Kristen Murphy 11 years, 9 months ago

Oh Larry...I wasn't talking about a National Title - that will come - give it time. I'm talking about how pumped up you guys get and every year KU seems to let everyone down. I thought Mangino was supposed to be a savior to the football program? I have yet to see him do anything great. To me it seems that he hasn't lived up to his expectations. Which is too bad - he came from two great programs that did well. Too bad he hasn't done anything...

Let the war begin - If Prince can walk the talk then it will be a LONG game for KU. :o)

ms_canada 11 years, 9 months ago

Nah - not excited at all. I am waiting for Hockey season to begin. Yehhhhhh pass that puck, boys. Go Robbie go!!! Love those Seattle Thunderbirds. Go TBirds Go!!

sgtwolverine 11 years, 9 months ago

Py, good luck on the NHL farm team. You have a long battle ahead of you. Come on -- you know you want to move to the hockey-loving north.

Ceal, UN takes it so seriously because aside from UN football, the state is a sports wasteland. Everything goes into college football there.

Larry, after this season they're starting a major renovation project on Michigan Stadium. There'll be a larger press box and luxury boxes (a new addition to the stadium), as well as various improvements like wider aisles, handrails, and better concourses (though how they're going to accomplish that, I have no idea). But that won't fix the real issue I have with the stadium. My problem with it is the crowd itself. It's like a library. 107,000 people should be far louder than most Michigan games are. And aside from the Ohio State game, it's so predictable: okay, big third down, let's all make noise. Okay, play's over, let's sit down and shut up now. The student section is an absolute riot, but most of the rest of the stadium is a dead zone half the time, like people aren't there to actually participate in the game. It drives me crazy. If you're not going to have fun and make some noise, then stay home and watch it on tv. The luxury boxes might help deflect more noise down to the field, but they can't deflect noise when it doesn't exist.

Oops. Sorry for the rant. That's my beef with Michigan football. I love the stadium, and I love the team, but the crowds are too quiet too often.

OldEnuf2BYurDad 11 years, 9 months ago

"As for the glory days being over - they will never be over. Win a Big XII championship and then we'll talk."

OK. I'm not saying it will happen this year or next, but give us a few years and I think we'll be there.

"Oh Larry...I wasn't talking about a National Title - that will come - give it time."

LOTS of time. KU is going to dominate in regional football recruiting for years to come after we win another bowl in 2006. You have a basketball coach with provenance, but how long do you think it'll be before his behaviors catch up with him and you find yourself calling Dana Altman to see if his little brother is looking for work? You have far more to overcome than we do, which makes me think that KU is far more likely to get ANOTHER national title before KSU gets it's FIRST.

I respect anyone who cheers on the team they love, but you need to settle in for several years of disappointing losses to KU in every sport (with the exception of chick hoops, maybe).

big_blue 11 years, 9 months ago

last season...

ku football went to a bowl game.

ku basketball went to the ncaa post-season tourney.

ku baseball went to the ncaa post-season tourney.

meanwhile, ksu did NONE of the above last season.

Larry 11 years, 9 months ago

KStater - Two bowls games in three years and being able to compete in nearly every game should be considered improvement. Mangino sold me two years ago when KU played at OU. I happened to be traveling home from Texas on that Saturday afternoon, made a call and was fortunant to secure some great seats at midfield. I believe that was the year that OU failed to show up in the title game and lost to KSU. At any rate, at the time, KU didn't have near the speed and athletic personnel that OU had, yet I watched KU play to a 17-7 deficit at the half. The game wasn't nearly as close by the end but I honestly predicted that at the half. I watched KU's kids play their tails off during the first half. Stoops had KU's defense running all over the field in the first half and their tongues were hanging out as they headed to the locker room. They were exhausted and I knew they didn't have the physical depth to play another half with OU big boys. Personnel continues to improve and I sincerely feel that KU's defense (by years end) will be every bit as good as last years. They'll make some early season blunders but man can they swarm. Speed wins. Ask Miami, Florida St., Texas, etc. This has got to be the fastest KU defense that I can recall. Good luck in Manhattan and don't forget that Neb. was coming off (what) a 9-3 record or something like that when Cal installed his west coast offense and it has been a difficult transition. K-State is transitioning into the west coast offense from a sub 500 season. That is a difficult offense to run because there are so many routes contingent on the defensive set. KU's defensive coordinator has been masterful at shutting down MU and Brad Smith. It will be exciting to see KSU's new offense. Do you think we'll have a match up of brothers at quarterback? That would be a great attraction for TV, huh?

BS20 11 years, 9 months ago

so we can lose first round again... yeah! screw that. GO FOOTBALL!

JerkStore 11 years, 9 months ago

I'll be excited when its a sport decided on the field instead of by a poll.

Until then, its figure skating with (somewhat) more violence.

Larry 11 years, 9 months ago

sgt wolverine - I can see the noise being a problem simply by the way that stadium is built. Like KU's east side, the seats go up and up and by the time you get to the top, you're a mile away. Only at Michigan stadium, it is like that all the way around the place. Too bad they didn't build tiers into that stadium so the upper level would be much closer to the field. That might help with the sound. Who knows?

OldEnuf2BYurDad 11 years, 9 months ago

"This has got to be the fastest KU defense that I can recall. "

FUN to watch. Punishing. Opposing team QB in a panic. Wow, it really was a fun season.

We just need some significant road wins, and then all the critics will be silent.

Kristen Murphy 11 years, 9 months ago

The only disapointment I have in K-State's team is letting the freshman quarterback go. He was the best one we had, but obviously he didn't think that. Which is a shame. I love Dylan Meyer, but it's going to be interesting to see how he plays. I would like to see dualing brothers - should be fun.

I just hope that Mangino goes somewhere, or it's a nice big swift kick in the butt out the door. I honestly thing he would have proved something by now. As for the baseball comment - who says K-State's great at baseball?!

Larry - Brad Smith was the most overrated football player EVER. Anyone could shut him down. K-State did it all the time.

sgtwolverine 11 years, 9 months ago

Jerk, the game is decided on the field. It's the mythical national championship that is decided by polls. Since I don't think college football needs an undisputed champion to be exciting and compelling, the polls are not a problem for me.

Besides, college basketball has its share of figure skating: the tournament committee and the RPI.

Larry, the stadium construction is an issue when noise is minimal, but believe me, that place can hold some serious thunder. I've been there for several such times (like the win over Michigan State that featured a fourth-quarter comeback AND a triple overtime victory...not good for my stress levels!).

Tiered stadiums may have some advantages, but there's nothing quite like seeing a huge unbroken sea of people like you get in a complete bowl stadium. (It also makes the wave pretty easy. Some may not see that as an advantage.)

Anyway, the root problem is the crowd itself, and not the stadium. It does allow a bit more sound to dissipate, but it certainly doesn't hinder a deafening roar, if the crowd is up to it. The root problem is that Michigan crowds (other than the student section) are usually reluctant to let go and make some noise outside of certain situations.

Also, having sat pretty far back (row 80something out of 100), I must say the view from further back really isn't too bad. Besides, as it's been said, the stadium was originally designed to expand to (I think) 175,000 without major structural changes. Of course, the new boxes and expanded press box will probably alter that ability a bit.

ms_canada 11 years, 9 months ago

omb - for goodness sake, don't ever go away. What would this board or life, for that matter, be like without you

Mama 11 years, 9 months ago

Mama's ready for football. KU football. That's right, I said it. And I would appreciate anyone within my earshot not mentioning freakin' basketball during FOOTBALL season. Especially when I'm in Memorial Stadium supporting my football team. That's right, KU has a football team...and a baseball team! Not just basketball. And because so many seem to only support basketball, I DON'T have season tickets to basketball. Only KU football and baseball. And I don't watch basketball, either. God love 'em, they don't need me. But our football and baseball teams do. Please, people, show a little kindness and back up Coach Mangino and his team. They're working hard and getting better every year. And if you choose not to be supportive then do all of us who are supportive a favor and don't jump on the bandwagon when our time comes. 'Cause it's coming!! YEAH!!!!!!!!!

Mama 11 years, 9 months ago

It just occured to me...What's up with Lauren? She said she'll be happy if KU beats K-State and she's looking forward to basketball...but she goes to K-State?!!! WTH?

OldEnuf2BYurDad 11 years, 9 months ago

Lauren lives in Lawrence, it seems. KSU must have an academic program that KU doesn't offer.

Okay. As long as he isn't headed up hill. (Sorry, but after all the momma jokes yesterday, I couldn't resist. My bad.)

Larry 11 years, 9 months ago

sgtwolverine - maybe the noise level isn't very loud because she set so high. I was astounded by the difference in crowd noise at Arrowhead when I set towards the top compared to 25 yard line, 13 rows up from the field. Unbelievable!

Linda Aikins 11 years, 9 months ago

OMG Bea - good one! I made a bet one year that KU would score more points in one season of football (against a K-state fan) than Magino weighs. We guessed him at 360 (12 games x average 30 points). Well, the last game, we would have had to beat OSU by something like 126 points.

TOB, I just directed our folks from the UK (who are traveling to Dodge City this weekend from KC just to see it - I didn't want to tell them to not bother...) to go through Greensburg and see the big well.

Linda Aikins 11 years, 9 months ago

TOB - yes. They are working for us on a 3-month assignment and are spending the weekends seeing America. They've been to New York City, Chicago, a Royals game, now are off to Dodge City, then Las Vegas, and San Francisco. Pretty fun!

beatrice 11 years, 9 months ago

Gootsie, if you want his weight to match points scored in a season, better go with the basketball team's season. I don't know what he weighs, but the man is so big he has his own atmosphere. I swear, I once saw a missed pass go into orbit around him. (Okay, I think I'm done now.)

Fangorn 11 years, 9 months ago

(just kidding)

If the Jayhawks go to a bowl game, Lawrence will carry Mangino around on their shoulders. Of course, it will take most of the city to do it........ I'm a Husker fan, but I have to wish the Jayhawks luck this year.

beatrice 11 years, 9 months ago

omb: thankfully our electricity has been fine here. Good thing, too, since last week we were in the 110s -- one day we hit 118. Ugh. Without ac, we would die.

Fortunately, I have been gone on vacation for a while -- the beautiful weather and beaches of Rio! We had never been to South America before, and it was so wonderful. Ipanema beach is just amazing. Since it is winter there, I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was in the mid to high 70s, so we ended up on the beach almost every day. It was just great. I dreaded coming back to the heat. Phoenix is great 8 months a year, but we suffer in the summer.

And before you ask, no, I didn't go topless. It is against the law and everyone had tops and bottoms -- though my swim wear is certainly more modest than what the locals wear.
