“Oh yeah. I’m diabetic, so I try and go low on carbs and stay away from the bread. I try not to eat fast food too often at all.”

Photo of Briana Swigart

“No. If you’re going to eat bad, you might as well do it right.”

Photo of Chris Locke

“Sometimes. More often now than I used to. Especially now that they offer it. You can replace the fries with a salad and get a grilled chicken sandwich instead of a burger.”

Photo of Mara Sipe

“Yeah. I get a salad or at least something that isn’t fried.”

Hannibal, do you consider "fast food" to be someone who runs track?

sweetpeagj 11 years, 10 months ago

I don't eat fast food very often so when I do I try to eat healthy.

H_Lecter 11 years, 10 months ago

You're very clever Gootsie. Now, your brain would definitely be worth eating.

I do try to validate this oxymoron (fast/healthy) whenever possible.

sgtwolverine 11 years, 10 months ago

If I were really trying to eat healthy, I would be avoiding fast food. There are ways to make it better for you (different sides, etc.), but ultimately, going for fast food isn't healthy. So when I do eat fast food, I don't consider health. I just buy what I want to eat.

YourItalianPrincess 11 years, 10 months ago

When we do go out to eat fast food ( and thats not often ) we go to either Taco Bell or Subway. My youngest likes the tacos and I like the taco salads. Subway has great sandwiches and eating a sandwich is better then eating something fried.

craigers 11 years, 10 months ago

I should but I don't. I do try to eat chicken as often as I can and when I go out I see if the grill chicken that is offered is appetizing.

Gootsie, I would think runner's might be a little tough to eat!!

Topside 11 years, 10 months ago

Briana Swigart will you marry me?

Though I like going to Wendy's and get their new Frescata sandwiches. While "Frescata" is not the most manly word to say while ordering it is a tasty sandwich and with baked lays in a combo, pretty healthy too.

Fatty_McButterpants 11 years, 10 months ago

YIP: Come on! Subway doesn't count as "fast food"! Jerod would have your arse for implying that...

YourItalianPrincess 11 years, 10 months ago

Its healthier to eat a sandwich then some fried something or another at McD's. The fries there are so greasy that the bags have grease spots on them.

sgtwolverine 11 years, 10 months ago

Yeah, you don't want to get make Jared mad. He'd probably wrap you in those giant pants he no longer wears and beat you with a Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki sub.

I'd eat healthy ... for a Klondike bar.

sunflower_sue 11 years, 10 months ago

I'm not real big on fast food. Right now, I'm into Target deli's sandwiches made on the squishy wheat bread with the turkey and havarti cheese with the proper amount of lettuce, tomato, and red onion. Who needs fries with a yummy sandwich like that? (Don't know how healthy it is.)

I do let the kiddies have fast food every now and then and when they do, I ask for my "mommy tax" which is usually about 3 or 4 frenchfries from each of them.

RI, the Sad Meals at Wendy's are great! My kids get those, too. Jr. bacon cheeseburger, fries, and a water for $2.14. Just can't beat it! If I'm feeling really flush, I'll even splurge for a 99 cent frosty for dessert.

Oh, I have a mess to go clean up. Happy 5th everybody. (I may need a 5th to get through the day.) :o)

good_kitty 11 years, 10 months ago

The only fast food that I would even consider is taco bell and that's maybe twice a year. I haven't consumed anything from a burger joint in over a decade and it feels good. And yes I am vegetarian which helps. I actually became vegetarian in 1992 so that I wouldn't be tempted to eat that crap anymore. I had to get a grip on my diet. It worked.

sgtwolverine 11 years, 10 months ago

Sue, maybe you should mix a 5th with a frosty. That would really get you through the day.

Oh hey, how's the tv/money thing going with the kids?

OldEnuf2BYurDad 11 years, 10 months ago

This entire question is an oxymoron.

It's too bad there isn't a fast-food healthy option. And no, Subway is not fast enough to be fast food. Not the ones in MO, at least.

Good Kitty, what do you eat at Taco Bell? The refried beans are made with lard.

ms_canada 11 years, 10 months ago

Never eat at the fast food places. Went to a Wendy's once while travelling through Spokane and had their Mediterranean salad which was very good. When hubby and I eat out we usually go to some ethnic restaurant like Ethiopean, Korean, Greek or the like. Being not quite a vegetarian, those burger and chips places really do not appeal to me. Do you have the rib specialty restaurant Tony Roma's down there? That kind of meat I will devour with delight. Their New Orleans style half rack of ribs is to die for along with a salad and veg. I consider that a healthy meal.

Ken Miller 11 years, 10 months ago

Isn't that an oxymoron - "healthy fast food?"

sunflower_sue 11 years, 10 months ago

Sgt, my oldest has spent approx $5 since summer break started and the youngest has spent just under that. I do allow them 1 free "family movie night" each week and right now they are into the "Kirate Kid" movies. It is working but costing me money I didn't think I was going to have to spend. Oh well, they are getting along much better and being more creative with their time. They are going to get a break when I'm in California for 18 days this month and just Dad and Aunt will be on duty. I hope they don't slip too far. Even if they do, I'm sure I'll be able to whip them back into my good little soldiers once I return! :o)

sunflower_sue 11 years, 10 months ago

good kitty, french fries are vegan so pig out!

Linda Endicott 11 years, 10 months ago

There is no way to eat fast food and eat healthy at the same time.

acg 11 years, 10 months ago

Does opting for a water or a diet coke with my double cheeseburger and fries count?

ms_canada 11 years, 10 months ago

I just googled Tony Roma and it seems Kansas has none but MO and OK and Tex. do. Just FYI :o)

OldEnuf2BYurDad 11 years, 10 months ago

Last I heard, the fries at McD's were being flavored with "animal products".

I wonder what happened to Kitty? Maybe she's still ralphing after reading about the lard.

Jocelyn Craft 11 years, 10 months ago

I wish I could say I 'ate healthy' (or at least, more healthily than the usual profferings) when I eat fast food. I'm a sucker for a Swiss butterburger and a shake...

I have limits though. Just a picture of the Hardee's Monster Thickburger (TM) makes my stomach turn, even though I love hamburgers. That's just too much. :-(

(Thanks for the link anyway, blue73harley. Nice to know I'm not being that harmful to my system.)

Come to think of it, I have that same reaction to Spangles' advertising...

sgtwolverine 11 years, 10 months ago

ms_c, I did eat at a Tony Roma's ... I think it might have been in Alabama. Anyway, I have been there, and I would agree that it's worth a visit.

OldEnuf2BYurDad 11 years, 10 months ago

It's only a matter of time before Hardees starts selling "Buckets of Fat combo meals". They'll have that creepy "King" guy in their ads just slamming down a bucket of liquid animal fats like a beer bong at a frat party with grease running down his royal robes.

You'll be able to substitute a side salad for the fries.

Ceallach 11 years, 10 months ago

blue!!!! Rosedale BBQ all the way!!!! You are obviously a man of good taste :) I tried Tony Roma's in LA a couple of years ago, my reaction was -- not bad but I could have eating for 4 days from Rosedale BBQ for the same price.

ms_c: too bad we didn't have this conversation before your visit, I would have whisked you over to KC for some ribs :)

Since denial is a major part of my stress reduction plan, I convince myself that I make good choices when I have to eat fast food. Let me see, Wendy's deluxe bacon cheeseburger, fries and Frosty. Very balanced, you have your meat, grain, vegetable (lettuce) and dairy, in one easy to carry form

Ceallach 11 years, 10 months ago

As if that creepy King and Paris weren't enough, the current ads with the big, @#8&%@ chicken are real stomach turners - and not in a good way.

beatrice 11 years, 10 months ago

blue: it is true, Ken Lay is dead. It is such a shame that he won't spend years in white-collar prison. (please, give me a moment to gather myself and wipe away the tears .... okay, better now)

I wonder if Bush will attend the funeral? He was Bush's largest contributor of the 2000 campaign, after all.

sgtwolverine 11 years, 10 months ago

I find the odd King commercials mildly amusing sometimes -- and I actually really enjoyed the ads where the King played football -- but the chicken ads are just weird. Not good.

H_Lecter 11 years, 10 months ago

I'd give an arm and a leg for some good ribs.

ms_canada 11 years, 10 months ago

blue harley - that is too bad, but I guess I have no choice as KC is a little far for me to go. I wish I knew the secret to KC bbq. I do make them at home and have a good recipe but everything can be improved upon, I believe. I like lots of garlic in my sauce. Do KCers use lots of garlic? Is pizza fast food? Another food that I love. Ok so maybe the cheese (lots of it) is unhealthy but being lactose intol. I put lots of soy mozza on mine (no cholesterol) and lots of veg like tomato, gr. & red peppers, blk olives, a bit of cooked, well drained Ital. sausage and I consider that healthy and yummy. Oh yes and thin, crispy crust.

acg 11 years, 10 months ago

I love the King commercials and the big chicken commercials (you guys are talking about the ones where the cowboys are riding the big chickens, right?). Those crack me up. The King is somewhat disconcerting, though. He just shows up in people's beds and stuff and no one seems to mind as long as he has a sammich. What?

lunacydetector 11 years, 10 months ago

yes, and i always supersize to help the poor starving children in china.

jonas 11 years, 10 months ago

I want to go as the King for Halloween one of these years. It'll be kind of a challenge, though, to go a whole night without saying anything, not to mention just standing by windows waiting for someone to look out, or quietly sneaking up to stand behind them until they turn around. I think it'll be worth it, though.

YourItalianPrincess 11 years, 10 months ago

What does one consider " fast food " in here?

I enjoy going to get take out Chinese, but would it be considered fast food? Does it have to be purely a drive through thing to be fast food?

OldEnuf2BYurDad 11 years, 10 months ago

Yeah, I got the King and Hard-grease confused with each other.

Is is me or is "big hucking chicken" just a euphamism for profanity? That's the only conclusion I can reach.

The only thing worse than the creepy King dude is the way that Hard-grease and McDs keep trying to imitate the theme. I'll admit, watching the King run the ball on the gridiron was kinda eye-catching, but after that, it was just strange.

I was driving looking for a place to have lunch on this wonderful day and noticed that Sonic had outdoor seating! I quickly turned in [tires: squealing] and ordered a coney. I'll pay for that. But, it was nice eating outdoors. Too bad my wife was 50 miles away, I would have called her to join me.

OldEnuf2BYurDad 11 years, 10 months ago

"He just shows up in people's beds and stuff and no one seems to mind as long as he has a sammich. What?"

Funny. Suddenly, my concern over teen's having sex has taken a backseat to my concern over "sandwich sex". I dont' care how liberal you are, you gotta agree that "sandwich sex" is unnatural. It's destroying our families; not to speak of the STDs (Sandwich-ly Transmitted Diseases).

BrianR 11 years, 10 months ago

If Ken Lay woke up and that scary burger king was standing next to him it's no wonder he had a heart attack. I'd drop dead too if I awoke to that.

Linda Endicott 11 years, 10 months ago

I know it's off-topic, but since everyone has been mentioning commercials...

And I guess it DOES deal with food...

I love the new M&Ms commercial, where they're on the Viking boat rowing...hilarious!

ms_canada 11 years, 10 months ago

hannibal - I'd invite you over next time I make ribs but am afraid I'd lose an arm and a leg.

Linda Aikins 11 years, 10 months ago

Good point about runners having tough meat.

BrianR, funny 1:28 post! I agree. That king is just creepy.

How is OMB today after Marion's lashing yesterday evening? I hope he's not too traumatized.

Grundoon Luna 11 years, 10 months ago

Speaking of commercials, if I see one more SPANGLE'S commercial I am going to RALPH!!!! When they were just opening up it was intollerable!!! For that reason I have avoided them entirely. Though it has gotten better, but they are still on the air too much. But now . . . . now, they are offering gyros and seeing that I'm from Chicago, the damn thing is going to suck me in to it's hideous vortex. I can feel it!

Linda Aikins 11 years, 10 months ago

Yep. Good job OMB.

TOB - I sent you an article from the Dodge City Daily Globe.

Redzilla 11 years, 10 months ago

At least if Ken Lay had to wake up next creepy Burger King in his bed, I'd feel like he got a little punishment. I admit my idea of healthy fast food is just skipping the pop and having iced tea. Woot!

dylanrules 11 years, 10 months ago

Just wondering if you knew that the taco salad at Taco Bell has 51 fat grams with the shell, without - 21 fat grams.

YourItalianPrincess 11 years, 10 months ago

Without the shell for me babe. Have always loved salads.

sunflower_sue 11 years, 10 months ago

Ms_C, I like to slow cook my pork ribs in the crockpot overnight. Then just "finish them up" on the grill the next day. Yummmmmm!
(H_L, this technique may work for your tougher cuts of meat.)

I think it's safe to say that KC has many different types of BBQ. I think most that I've eaten runs to the spicy side. Gates, Arthur Bryant's, and a place out south of Lawrence that I can't recall the name of right now. Daniel's in Tongie does an excellent job w/ ribs, too. At home, my current loves are Famous Dave's Texas Pit sauce for spicy ribs and Curley's Hickory (made in Hutchinson, KS) for a sweet sauce...depending on my mood, of course. Next month it will probably change. What will never change is that all BBQ MUST be served with lots and lots of dill pickle chips! :oP**

Grundoon Luna 11 years, 10 months ago

Sue, you have great taste is sauces especially the Curley's, it rocks. I tried Jack Daniel's sauce this weekend and it wudn't bad.

sunflower_sue 11 years, 10 months ago

A_A, I think it's safe to say that Jack Daniel's is great for getting sauced! ;o)

Ceallach 11 years, 10 months ago

Azure: their gheee-ros are ghee-ood :) {disclaimer: for fast food that is :}

Linda Aikins 11 years, 10 months ago

The best bbq in Lawrence is right here in my home. My honey grills/smokes like no other. And his meats are good too!!

ba da boom
