Is it too distracting for crossing guards to wave at passers-by while working?

“I don’t think a blanket no-waving policy is necessary. I would hope our crossing guards would be capable of using their own discretion.”

Photo of Adrienne Njoroge

“I think it would be more of a distraction for the drivers than for the crossing guard because it draws their attention away from the children around them.”

Photo of Courtney Williams

“No, I don’t think it’s distracting. I think it’s just people being friendly.”

Photo of Mike Maude

“Yeah, it probably is. It can give a mixed signal to the traffic.”

I've been posting here pretty regular for months & can't recall ever seeing anything as pointed as THE *** INCIDENT.

I said this about the misspelling more for others who might be looking on, I knew you'd know from OTS experience with my wacky ways... yeah, beat a lawyer...the saddest part is that if he'd been reasonable polite we wouldn't have resorted to treating him like a troll, but when you act like a little stinky troll, its gonna motivate people to react.

0

sweetpeagj 8 years, 2 months ago

I wasn't trying to belittle you for the spelling..I have read and posted with you long enough to know that that is how you can make people pay attention. I think that his list was way too short and very selective for all the people that should have been on it. I will feel honored instead of upset Proud member of the SHOEMAKER LIST..wonder if it's a sign of the ones that he couldn't intimidate..we beat a lawyer at his own BS game..yeah for us gnome :)

0

bearded_gnome 8 years, 2 months ago

sometimes, Sweatpea, I purposely misspell for emphasis, or is that emfassis... yeah, how did I get to the beginning of his hit list? this guy's behavior certainly confirms my desire to maintain my annonymity on here!
he should try the following: say the word "obsessed" ... all three sylabals slowly, gradually repeating it so he speaks it more slowly each time, to where it takes him five full seconds to say "obsessed."
he should do this every day, several times a day!

0

sweetpeagj 8 years, 2 months ago

must be the gnome offended him or maybe it was the beard that distratced him. you weren't trying to be nice were you?? Maybe that really confused his lawyer senses. Or maybe it's your spelling lol..good to see you back though..

BTW, I just looked at the drudgereport, a site I do frequent, and Mr. Whales' ain't mentioned in any of the headlines...

once I did inform drudge RE some local politics, and next day the ljw servers were flooded 'cuz Drudge listed that lawrence story (screamin' Howard Dean came to Lawrence), but don't know if I should take credit for that, or whether Matt Drudge caught that himself.

0

bearded_gnome 8 years, 2 months ago

somebody puncture his balloon! its about to pooopp! oh, that's his head...

save the whales instead, envirowacko too?

narrow-minded-trying to shut this down-trying to call down national attention--is Matt Drudge covering this, if he does, it'll be, the story of how silly it is to ban the wave and yet again some little person walks around with a hair-triggered offense-o-meter on his life.

I suspect that Mrs. White has made many many more kids' lives safer than you will ever, mr. pro se lawyer...and with that are you saying you actually are a lawyer. did you menace the LJW with legal action over the posts removed above? fold up your tent and go home!

0

sweetpeagj 8 years, 2 months ago

Hey, I happen to be a person who enjoys being around waving, smiling people. I also know the difference between waving and holding up that stop sign crossing guards use. Maybe you could call for national attention and figure out who I am. Reality is, nobody cares who I am, I didn't make Lawrence look small and petty yet again.

I have an announcement to make. Most of you know I have been on these blogs about the crossing guards from the very beginning and I have seen many sides of the story , and some agree with my points also. You might say "So what?"

Well I have to tell you that I am , indeed, John Shoemaker. Yes that's right. Let me explain:

I did originally call the school about the crossing guard using the sign to wave and that it appeared to me that there was a large amount of attention being paid to the crossing guards and maybe not full attention on driving and kids and safety, etc.And how can a guard be paying full attention to the kids and when to cross if they are attempting to pay attention to EVERY car that passes?

The crossing guard's supervisor called ME , I told HER the story and she agreed with me that the guard should not be waving at EVERY SINGLE car. She told me that the guards can always wave back and they can wave if they make eye contact with someone but they should not be attempting to wave at every car because it would take attention away from the job at hand.

It also appears that many people here also agree. It seems that there a few Prairie Park parents that are insisting on making this a personal issue with ME. It would look like a few certain people would say that I don't have the constitutional right to bring up an issue. Could that be the idea here? I didn't think so.

This has always been an issue of safety. Some of us want to concentrate on driving and kids instead of waving at people. You cannot wave at this person and keep your eyes on the road. Unless you are waving at them without looking at them and if that's the case how did you know they were waving at you and not the car behind you? Bottom line:.. her supervisor agrees with me, other people agree with me and all of you who disagree and have started a HATE campaign should been ashamed of yourselves.

There was never any personal issues between myself and Mrs. White, and to Mrs. White I do apologize for all that you have been through here , that does not mean I am taking full responsibility, I am simply apologizing for EVERYONE. There was no offense meant.

I have taken the pulse of the neighborhood. This has been an experiment in human social behavior.

This has also turned into a gossip forum. Shut it down admin.

If you're so stupid that you can be confused by a waving crossing guard who utilizes a handheld stop sign, you shouldn't be driving. Next thing you know, people will be complaining that roundabouts are confusing...

0

What would you do to make the future city of Lawrence a better place?

Did anyone mention Hooters then?

0

Purell 8 years, 2 months ago

I can't believe that this is even a question. How many kids will have to die or be seriously injured before we put the clamps on unnecessary waving by crossing guards?

BTW, can they smoke or uses cell phones while on duty? We better include those in the ordinance. Wait, no dancing too.

0

kansasnative 8 years, 2 months ago

If people are extremely distracted by her simple but friendly parade wave (aggressive - extreme LOLOLOL) while passing a few moments waiting for more precious kids to cross our street - then that person needs to carefullly consider going on prozac or maybe not having that morning coffee afterall. I would LOVE to see your driving record.

0

beatrice 8 years, 2 months ago

prospector: "Me thinky Marion is playing land whale today." I think you nailed it! You are a regular Columbo (or would you prefer Monk?).

As far as today's question -- one would really have to give it their all in a wave, like one would if stranded on an island and they see a plane in the distance, to really be considered distracting. A simple wave hello is just nice.

0

bearded_gnome 8 years, 2 months ago

0

bearded_gnome 8 years, 2 months ago

aside from hitchhiking, standard thumb gesture meanings, established by the Caessar, couple thousand years ago: two thumbs up, you live on, and the crowd liked what you did.
one thumb up: you get to live, and you'll be glad for that. one thumb down: you're a dead gladiator.

two thumbs down, you're really dead meat for the circus animals, and the crowd hates your guts, literally!

now, apply that to crossing guards?

60-years and up, gravity--lol.

0

sunflower_sue 8 years, 2 months ago

Prospector, I think liability and an unsafe world has done away with them. I don't remember the last time I saw a 6th grade crossing guard. Part of our duties was to put up and take down the flag everyday. I still see kids doing this but with not the same "respect" that we were taught to use. Kinda sad. Mrs. Kerns (my 6th grade teacher) would have eaten these kids for lunch. I affectionately refer to my elementary school as "little bootcamp."

0

killjoy 8 years, 2 months ago

0

even_money 8 years, 2 months ago

You've heard of "Secret Shopper."

I wonder if there's such a thing as 'Secret Crossing Guard'?

Dashes out of the bushes and stops traffic for no apparent reason and not even at an intersection.

Must crossing gards submit to a breathalyzer test?

'Secret Breathalyzer Tester'...

0

prospector 8 years, 2 months ago

Me thinky Marion is playing land whale today, 24 posts since yesterday??????

Sun_sue

Still quick on the feet, I'm sure. Do you know if they still exist? My guess no. Between the slacker, with the excuse 'not cool', kids and the school board worried about liability, more than likely a thing of the past. A responsibility lesson lost.

0

Ceallach 8 years, 2 months ago

Sorry, Kline -- we couldn't tell that you were smiling :)

0

Ceallach 8 years, 2 months ago

I wonder if Mike Maude was one of the consultants that recommended roundabouts?

0

sunflower_sue 8 years, 2 months ago

Kline, C'mon, don't spoil our fun!

Prospector, I was a 6th grade crossing guard. We had boy guards, too. I also got to wear the nifty belt thingie, plus a badge! I was on a very busy street and I can remember a close call or two. I did almost get hit by a guy on motorcycle once. He didn't notice the truck stopped in front of him in time and swerved to miss it...right towards me. YIKES! He missed all us kiddies and like a true gentleman, sacrificed himself and his bike. (Just scratches for both.)

This waving thing reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where the candy bar heiress is walking along the sidewalk wearing a bra top, and is then sued for being a distraction and causing a wreck. LOL

0

Has Sylvia ever been a crossing guard?

That would be distracting!

0

I have enjoyed watching the police try to use their battery-powered radar gun at the Peterson road crosswalk. They hide behind the powerline pole with it. I always wave at them...with my finger. Hope I haven't distracted them.

Dear Frustrated Prairie Park resident:

MB you should be more in touch as to how tough this job of being a crossing guard is, have you ever spoken to the crossing guard, personally? I have one who works a 4 way stop on Kasold, mb u should come down here every morning and keep tabs on how many people run this stop sign when there are kids in the crosswalk because they are in such a big hurry to get to work or class because they are late..to tell u the truth they run it when there is no crossing guard so be a good frustrated citizen and engage your brain b4 u put your mouth in motion...BTW....how is your sidewalk situation, and do something about K-10 too?

PS they are looking for good help in Iraq too! Be a good citizen, they are taking in the 40's now...good bonus too!

E-M said," :dressed in a cute crossing guard outfit:"

Did anybody else have Sixth grade "patrol boys"? Yes they discriminated. It was olden days.

We had cool yellow belt's that went around our waist and over one shoulder and yellow raincoats.

Pluses, several minutes you got out of class every morning and afternoon, if it was cold hot chocolate before class.

Minuses, getting the post that had one kid using it. If raining, fifteen minutes standing in the rain alone.

Girls' did get to be "Hall Monitor", and they had clot.

So, look for the belt and bright yellow raincoat.

0

bearded_gnome 8 years, 2 months ago

answer the question: no a crossing guard isn't distracting as waving, unless that CG is topless with at least one balloon above her head!...

I say, we must equip every roundabout in the city with a friendly waver in the middle, who only waves at those individuals who go the right direction.

btw, the complaint seemed to come through the "traffic safety committee," the boys and girls who give us these roundabouts.

0

even_money 8 years, 2 months ago

Official crossing guard signals must be limited to a definite pre-determined set. Thumbs up /down signals could certainly be included.

The Governor doesn't have much going on right now. Write her a nice long letter.

0

even_money

I plan to do #1 @ 2:00 as the game is ending.

I will be doing #2 while trying to order a beer at the brewery during the game.

I regularly do #3 as a random act of kindness, even more so upon leaving the brewery after a KU victory.

0

even_money 8 years, 2 months ago

In order to clarify, Kansas plans to include a roster of crossing-guard waving signals to the state drivers licensing exam:

1) Both arms flailing back and forth overhead: emergency situation. Come safely to a full stop and inquire as to the nature of the problem.

2) One arm flailing back and forth overhead: the men's basketball team just won a game.

3) One hand limited to wrist action: have a nice day!

0

teach1reach1 8 years, 2 months ago

AND what about the poor tax people that jump up and down and wave during every rush hour? Music, bright lights, bouncing people? Now that's distracting! How can I tell? People in front of me nearly having wrecks because they didn't realise the car in front of them had stopped. I think getting them to stop the theatrics would positively affect a greater number of people.

0

teach1reach1 8 years, 2 months ago

It was a MAN that complained, thank you very much! I've had many men tell me they can't mulit-task. So I'm guessing driving and checking out women can't be done well, either. But seriously, read the article for today. The guard that got reprimanded wasn't the one that caused the problem. I think the paper needed to report exactly what was so confusing for him that he couldn't assess the situation while driving within the 20mph limit...or so we hope!

0

8 years, 2 months ago

This is really sad. Waving is such a friendly gesture and it's good to have positive role models around the children. Obviously this man who is complaining is in too much of hurry....and unfortunely he has forgotten what life is really about. Life is about being nice to others and finding true happiness. The crossing guard is living life and the complaining driver is lost in his own hell.

Kline, NEED MORE DECAF! Or maybe half caf half decaf. Do I need a Grande, or maybe just a Tall? Should I buy fom Starbucks, or maybe I should get it from La Prima Tazza. Maybe I should just go through a drive up. Should I get a doughnut to go with it? Maybe I should try to cut back. I JUST DON"T KNOW!!! TOO MANY POSSIBILITIES!!! AGHHHHHHHHH!

0

classclown 8 years, 2 months ago

If a simple wave causes such a reaction then somebody obviously does not deserve to even have a license. Handling a vehicle is way too complicated for you.

0

Kline 8 years, 2 months ago

I don't want to pop anyone's balloon, but a crossing guard waving is distracting. Is she just waving? Is she waving at me or someone in my rearview mirror? Is she trying to flag me down? Is there a kid hurt nearby? Am I speeding? Why is she waving at me? Is she going to write me a ticket and have the sherrif mail me a ticket? What did I do wrong? She's just being friendly? It's too late to wave back. I just drove up on the curb.

0

classclown 8 years, 2 months ago

My guess would be that the driver that complained about this found herself in a quandary since with one hand on the wheel and one holding a phone next to her head she didn't know how she could wave back and decided it was best to complain that it was a "distraction".

Ever since I moved to this state I've been waved at by crossing gaurds wherever I have encountered them. Not once has it ever distracted me. People drive at much faster speeds through the streets than they do in a school zone paying more attention to their radio or Big Mac or phone conversation than they do the road.

How many people do you see honking and waving at friends while driving 45 or more on the streets?

0

bankboy119 8 years, 2 months ago

Is Lawrence really trying to "ban" waving at traffic if you're a crossing guard? I really didn't think I could believe that the people in charge were any bigger idiots but Boog did bring us Dada....so why am I surprised.

0

offtotheright 8 years, 2 months ago

As long as she is not holding a balloon in the other hand, I would say flipping the bird is fine.

0

supermel718 8 years, 2 months ago

Does the no more waving policy include flipping the bird?

0

offtotheright 8 years, 2 months ago

Balloons are banned silly!

Maybe she could go stand out on K-10, and wave her sign for the traffic, notifying them of a vehicle leaving the Business Park?

0

even_money 8 years, 2 months ago

Every child crossing the street should be given a balloon :)

0

Goodfella 8 years, 2 months ago

Let me tell ya something about crossing guards doing the wave! It might not seem like a very dangerous thing, but when you have a hot piece of tail like Sharon White wave at you while you are driving down the rode, you might get totally erect, which could cause the steering wheel to turn incorrectly. This could cause a major tragedy LIKE the running over of 5 (or so) kids that feel it is really necessary to protest against Sharon waving. Don't you all see what is happening. At one time Sharon was the premiere "Up and Coming" adult film star from Lawrence, Kansas, but her age ended up getting the best of her. What we really need to do is contact the Libery Hall and ask them to have a Sharon White adult film festival. If they are ok with it, Sharon would receive all the proceeds and would never need to wave again. How about it, Lawrence? Let's all join hands for smut.

0

Welcome to the friendly city of Lawrence!!! Too many people just don't want to communicate in this city....I have been throught that intersection, many times, and she is doing her job very well....she pays attention to the children but she in turn does try to be polite and friendly to all others in her zone. This is something that people in this area do not like, apparently, try to converse with a stranger around here, hell simply "wave" at them and see what the response will be!!!
