Are you happy to hear that Joe’s Bakery is back?
Asked at Massachusetts Street on August 8, 2006
“Yeah. I was in a house in college, and we would all make late-night runs. It kept us going. Joe’s is a part of Lawrence, just like the Wheel or the Hawk. I can personally thank Joe’s for my freshman 15.”
“I am. Very much so. I wish they’d been open all summer.”
“I’m very happy to hear that they are back. They’re a long-established Lawrence tradition, and I think it’s important to be able to get hot fresh doughnuts well into the night.”
“Yes, because it’s under new management.”

is it disk or disc? Or did they spell it that way because Edwin was the only one that didn't have a "k" in his last name?
I've only been to Joe's once. A friend broke her tailbone so I bought an 18" doughnet there for her.
Gosh, I crack myself up.
hitme 6 years, 9 months ago
Why do they bother? Their hours are ridiculous (They're a DONUT SHOP and they don't open until 8:00am - completely missing the before-work business) They might as well be out of business as far as I'm concerned.

because people don't go there in the morning, they go there in the middle of the night. Actually, I don't get it either. But, I always liked it. And, I know some of the new owners and they are good people, so that helps.

Gootsie, I'm pretty sure it's disc, though most people don't care.
Also, since I don't live in the area, I've never been to Joe's. However, I am happy because it's my birthday today.

trinity 6 years, 9 months ago
YES blue, absolutely.
ok, here's a new slant; are they using transfatty oil to cook these lil' gems in?? or are they using pc cooking oil? hmmmm...
sgtwolverine 6 years, 9 months ago
acg, I am turning 25. I am very much looking forward to any drop in my car insurance rates.
Maybe I should try to party with Dustin Hoffman today. Do you think he'd go for that, omb?
sgtwolverine 6 years, 9 months ago
Perhaps I will take The Edge to Joe's for an 08 August-sized pile of donuts.
Although I see that I also share a birthday with the creator of Magnum PI. That may be the best one. Maybe he'll throw a party with Magnum, TC, Rick and Higgins.
omb, that is an absolutely amazing headline. I can't believe my eyes.

Sgt, Happy birthday you young puppy, you!
RI, Sounds like you need to let the spousal unit out for some late night (girls only) margarita and doughnut tasting. OK, that sounds gross. How about we change that to those hallow fried Mexican thingies drenched in honey? (I can't think of what they're called right now...up w/ a puking kid last night and my brain doesn't work this morning.)
RETICENT_IRREVERENT 6 years, 9 months ago
I do not see why my 6:57 post was deleted...
It was donut related.
A. Some would call Joe's Bakery donuts nirvana.
B. Cobain once covered the song "Donuts"
Donuts, donuts, I'm in the middle I wonder if I could get some nice round donuts The ones with the hole in the middle Some like 'em round, some like 'em square Some with the sugar on top The ones that I like are the ones you can dunk The ones that go plop, plop, plop
C. The question is "Are you happy to hear that Joe's Bakery is back?"
I said I was happy .
jayhawks71 6 years, 9 months ago
An actress living in OP. Sort of like Willie Aames living in Olathe after hitting it big again as "BibleMan"!
sunflower_sue 6 years, 9 months ago
RI, you can never tell what might get you zapped, sometimes. Let me guess...you typed with your left hand only??? That'll do it everytime!
craigers 6 years, 9 months ago
sgt, I hate to burst your bubble, but don't count on the insurance going down. Maybe I got hosed, but when I turned 25 last year, I was looking for it too, but didn't get it and my agent said the age is 30 now for the big break. Otherwise though, happy birthday to you man. Just for that I am giving you the day off. Kick your feet up and relax.
RETICENT_IRREVERENT 6 years, 9 months ago
SALACIOUS SUE,
I think not.
About these SOAP PILLOWS
Do they use NaOH to make them? What % solution? Do you have to titrate your solution to determine your concentration? What reagent do you use? Do you keep your burettes clean? Do you use H3PO4 to clean them? Have you ever had you petcock leak?
sgtwolverine 6 years, 9 months ago
Even if I don't get an insurance break now, I can count on a few in a few years; I have several accidents to come off my record. I can always look forward to that ... assuming I stay away from further trouble.
Hey, craigers, do you think my boss would go for it if I told her you gave me the day off, so I'm going home now? I sure like the sound of that.
mochacat 6 years, 9 months ago
We would like to acknowledge Brad Rettele for doing a great job turning Joe's around over the past year. He really cleaned up the place and served us well. We would like wish Brad well in his new endeavors.

regarding the actress...i'm bored, i followed the link; about got hysterical, because where it read "KU pom squad" i could've sworn it said KU PORN squad!!! too much computer time, today...
and would someone puhLEASE teach this girl the difference between roll/role?? fer gawd's sweet sake! :)
she's looking for "rolls" eh? well by cracky i think this joe's bakery question fits just dandy here! :)

Happy Birthday Sgtwolverine!
Or as the LJWorld might say, "Happy Birthay!"
Hope it's a good one.
Eat some donuts. I find that makes any day better.
sunflower_sue 6 years, 9 months ago
Soap pillows? Ha!
OK, I'll play: Yes, about a 1:10 ratio of NaOH to fat. Titration not necessary when I can just plug #s into my SAP calculator. Barrettes are not necessary as I just wear hair in a ponytail. I use Suave (or whatever's cheapest). I do have a pet cock but he's just crows too loud and is not doing his job so I think he'll end up in a pot. Definitely not in a soap pillow...that would just be wrong. :oP

today's my BD too
I asked my daughter if she would take me out to eat dinner and she said no
She said she would bake me a birthday cake and I could eat in in my birthday suit
ehhhh good enough
Big bad 36! Now it's all downhill!
sunflower_sue 6 years, 9 months ago
kschick, Happy b.day to you, too!
p.s. 36 is NOT going downhill! Bite your tongue. Oh, and tell your daughter that you don't need her to take you out. (You've just adopted an 18 year old pool boy and he's going to take you out.) ;)
H_Lecter 6 years, 9 months ago
I wonder how Sue will "counter" on that one!
MomMeg 6 years, 9 months ago
happy birthday sarg and kschick!
I have a great reopening special for joe's -- call it the ljw special, and serve donuts with white power sprinked on them!!
craigers 6 years, 9 months ago
sgt, I think you should try it. Just tell her that somebody with the screenname craigers said for your birthday you could go home. I would like to see that reaction.
RETICENT_IRREVERENT 6 years, 9 months ago
T_O_B,
I don't know if asking Sue that question is a good Idea....
"I do have a pet cock but he's just crows too loud and is not doing his job so I think he'll end up in a pot. "
Sounds alot like that crazy chick in "Fatal Attraction"
"Bring the dog, I love animals... I'm a great cook." "I won't be ignored, Bob!"
(sunflower_sue as Alex Forrest in "Fatal Attraction 2") . . I'd be careful if I were you.....
hawklet21 6 years, 9 months ago
trinity, you rock for saying "by cracky." completely unrelated, I know, but I had to giggle. I've never been to joe's, but I've heard good things so now I can try it!
Sandra Willis 6 years, 9 months ago
Happy Birthday to sgt. wolverine and Sue as well ... as one who turned 38 her last birthday, never believe that getting older = getting worse I'm not getting older... I'm just becoming more complex.
trinity 6 years, 9 months ago
unrelateddddddd, oh now THAT'S a hoot! ;)
goood good donuts at joe's, toots. a surefire way to kick off a SCHOOL day! ;)
now-get back to work, slacker! :)
craigers 6 years, 9 months ago
blue, it looks like the article is fixed now with the correct term in the title. Does anybody know if that happenned on the actual newspapers delivered this morning? Now that would be hilarious.
massst 6 years, 9 months ago
renne is an actress?
sunflower_sue 6 years, 9 months ago
TOB, You are just bad! Bodan has the right of it.
I can say this, TOB, get yourself "fixed" when you're sure you're done and things will be honeymoon good again! :o) No worries! (And an 18 yr old pool boy is never a bad idea!) 'Course, I don't have a pool...
RI, you're right, too. I'll not be ignored! (As much as I'd like to be at times.) :)
sunflower_sue 6 years, 9 months ago
H_L, "counter!" You're a funny one! (With a terribly long memory!)
Pywacket 6 years, 9 months ago
Gootsie: it's disque! Also.... you said, "crack." (heh heh heh)
Happy Birthday, Sgt W, from your friendly neighborhood Fightin' River grrl. I'm so late getting here, probably no one is even reading this any more. Still, you have one more Michigan hour of fine, quality birthday time, so I hope you're making the most of it.
I loved Joe's from the time that I moved to Lawrence in the early 80s until.... let's see... I moved away from student slumland and Joe's went to heck. I will most certainly try out the refurbished Joe's for old time's sake.
Now, what was that headline I missed?
Kuku_Kansas 6 years, 9 months ago
Ah Joe's...gotta love Joe's!
