Are you disappointed that the KU football game has been moved to Arrowhead Stadium?
Asked at Jefferson's Restaurant, 743 Mass. on October 14, 2005
“No, because I’m going out of town, and it’s nice that the game will be nationally televised so that students on fall break can watch it from wherever they go.”
“Absolutely. I’m a University of Oklahoma graduate, and I’m very disappointed in the athletic administration for moving it when Memorial Stadium is an absolutely gorgeous place to watch the game at this time of year.”
“No. They can bring in more revenue at Arrowhead than they can at Memorial Stadium. It will mean more money for KU, just not for Lawrence.”
“Yes, because it takes business away from the Lawrence community.”

It's going to take more than a game played in a big stadium to improve KU' s win loss stats. Seems Texas, K State, OU and Nebraska take care of Big 12 football while KU takes care of basketball so let's leave it at that….after all it's only a game. Fans still have fun hanging around Lawrence whether KU has winning football team or not and local residents make a few extra bucks parking cars in yards..
Let's keep the money in town

It's a little sad and a little aggravating, but just another symptom; Lawrence stopped being Lawrence YEARS ago and is unfortunately well on its way to being some homogenous and faceless clone of Overland Park. Does that mean that when everyone leaves town for a day we'll have the streets to ourselves?
That will be a great time to set up a press conference and coach the participants on what to say, since no one (except for the lone cameraman) will be around to see us.

Totally agree. You say this to the average Lawrence person and they look at you like you are satan, nevermind how true it is. All the prototypical Lawrencians that posted the effect of “thank goodness, no tourists” are the same ones that bitch about bad roads, bad libraries, etc… are clueless. KU home games, much less games against teams that travel well, are a significant boom to the local economy.
The game being moved is just another scam by East Coast Lew. He wanted a quick paycheck and so moving a home game to KC (which will become an OU home game) was it. Poor poor Lew, though. He thought OU would be a Top 5 team at this point. Now, they aren't and Independence, MO isn't that attractive of a place to travel… especially when Lawrence was the other option.

Providing KU players the opportunity to play in an NFL stadium against a top notch (usually) opponent does nothing but help the football program.
If you make the program better, you get better recruits, the team gets better, they win more games, more people come to home games and everyone wins.
This is an investment in the future of Kansas football. This will benefit the local businesses in the long run.
People should really get over it. If you want a competitive team that draws large crowds, you have to make a few sacrifices along the way.
Perkins is doing a fine job. Raising money and the profile of the university. This needs to be done.

2/3 filled NFL stadium where 60%+ of the fans will be cheering for OU. Yes, do tell, big help to the football team. Not to mention giving up homefield advantage against a down OU team where one of those wins you were talking about was definately possible. Not to mention the negative effect on the local economy. Investment in the future of KU football? I don't see it.
I do agree that Lew is doing a fine job… just a mistake on this game. If he wanted an Arrowhead game… perhaps a non-con game against good competition (as opposed to what MU did) prior to the Big 12 slate.

Financially speaking, doesn't KU benefit more by playing a game in an NFL stadium filled to 2/3 capacity than it would by playing at Memorial Stadium filled to 2/3 capacity? IF KU were to defeat OU this year, wouldn't it draw more fan support, whether at Memorial Stadium or Arrowhead, in the years to follow?
Besides getting more exposure for the Kansas University, I think playing a football game at Arrowhead allows other KU fans, that may not live within an earshot of Lawrence, the opportunity to decide whether or not they'd be interested in supporting the team in Lawrence.
I could be wrong.

Good Morning Everyone and TGIF!!!!!!!!!!
Happy Friday to all of you in here.
I'm not much of a football fan so this question wouldn't matter to me. I truely don't undestand what each flag means let alone those markers either. I'm more of a baseball girl……..so Go Angels!!!!!!!!!
Heres one for all of you to ponder on for the day.
I have a daycare parent who was on her way here to pick up here son after work yesterday. She ran out of gas and got basically got stuck. She was in her car when an officer pulled up next to her and told her she couldn't park there and to move her car. She told this officer she wasn't parking that she had run our of gas. He then told her again that she couldn't stop there and to move her car. She told him she was eight months pregnant and she was tyring to get ahold of someone and he then told her that wasn't his problem and to move her car. The whole time this officer was in his car and didn't offer as assitance what so ever.
He drove off leaving her there to fend for herself. She ended up pushing her car out of the way, walking to a gas station, paid for a can of gas, walked back to her car and thats when she called me. She was in tears and she was in major pain around her stomach area. She told me a friend was on her way to pick up her son and that she was going to the hospital. She thought she may in labor because of so much pain she was having.
She called my after she left the hospital and said she was okay, she hadn't gone into labor but did pull alot of stomach muscles. Talk about a scare for her and how frantic she was.
The bad thing is she didn't get the officer's name or badge number because he never got out of his car. I told her she has a case here against this officer and the LPD, but she would have to write down everything she remembered. Where she was, time it was and if she could describe him.
If feel she has a case here, but thats just me. I would rake this officer for not ” To Protect and Server ” doing his job by helping out a citizen in distress.
We shall see what happens with this and if she does anything about it. I told her this morning when she dropped off her son that she was insane if she didn't do anything at all.
To make a long story short here…….. He then l

…and another thing IP, was your friend running late and couldn't stop for gas because you charge a late pickup penalty per minute? i had one of my kids in daycare and the lady nailed me on a per minute basis. i think it was $2 per minute.
if you do enforce the late pickup fee, and this lady was running out of gas, perhaps it is YOUR fault the lady had to push her car. just trying to get to the root of the matter. -but i am assuming ALOT of things.
actually, i'm trying to be a smart *ss.
perhaps the cop misunderstood your friend and it's all a big misunderstanding -kinda like the dispatcher who had the police go to some old couples house because the caller i.d. had the dispatcher's extension and the caller was from oklahoma.

IP - I'm so sorry about your friend. I hope things are OK. I would bet she does not name her baby after the officer.

For KU football….whoever said it was a good thing, you're wrong. Who in Missouri cares about KC football? As soon as you get over the state line nobody cares about KU…I found it weird when I moved up to the city but it's just life. Now the money will be going to Missouri that could have been going to KS, wow great idea Lew.

This weekend's football game being moved to Arrowhead is a catch 22, & I found out who was behind it all, the chancellor. The reason behind this was that he could attract more KU fans &/or alum from the K.C. metro area (immediately within Arrowhead proper). Now, the Catch 22 I bring up is as follows: 1. Lawrence loses & loses BIG not just this game but the money our community could have generated. 2. How can the chancellor himself guarantee US that this move will bring MORE KU backers to the game tomorrow night? I am against things like this, because Lawrence just doesn't have what it takes to attract big events like this KU-OU game. Though, I have heard OU has had a terrible season thus far. Not as bad as KU, though.

As a former KU athlete (Bob Frederick/Al Bohl era), I was never really fond of the A.D. anyway. I think this, partly, stems from Frederick's decision to discontinue men's swimming and men's tennis. Those feelings probably just carried over to Bohl's stint.
Anyway…I don't know, in detail, the official job description used to outline the duties of an athletic director, but I'm not real sure how much of it deals with boosting the economy outside the college campus. I agree that they are public figures and, yes, they should work alongside other public figures with power to better the community, using the resources they have at their disposal. However, I think Lew's main focus, as it should be, is athletics. If everyone ranted and raved about awesome the economy was in Lawrence while ku's athletic performance was pathetic, across all sports, I think Lew would be on the hotseat. Therefore, I don't think we should really expect him to think of Lawrence's economy first, when it comes to KU athletics.
Once again,…I could be wrong.

I'd like to say that it was because of an inappropriate comment, but as thunderbuns post (and mine yesterday) were moved out more by a personal opinion of taste than anything. It seems that post removal is random and at the discretion of what the admin likes or dislikes.
The admin's complaint was originally being off-topic for removal, but I believe that about as much as I believe that the city can buy a roundabout for $50,000.

oops — forgot to address the question :) I am not personally disappointed, that is true, but as a resident of Lawrence, I think it stinks that they are doing this to the local businesses. Revenue from such events helps take the edge off of dealing with the “other” side of doing business a college town. Lew is a hired gun, I expect nothing related to loyalty from him. I think too many people actually believe that the athletic department is still a functioning part of the university — I do not.

IP: I'm a little surprised by your ire regarding the alledged incident between a police officer and one of your daycare mothers. One side of a story is seldom ever complete — I'm not taking the officer's side, just saying, if we can worry that Jason Rose may be innocent of the allegations, and this often comes up on the board — why is it so easy to assume that the officer did everything the mother alledges? I just think we shouldn't fry the guy from one person's description on an incident. Also, that person was frustrated because she was out of gas and running late. She may not have come to the same conclusions if she had been an uninvolved by-stander. Do you know if anyone else came to her assistance? Usually people are very good about stopping to help, especially if a woman is obviously expecting a child.
