HAH, that was funny jhawk226...i've often wondered the same thing myself!

favorite halloween candy? ANYTHING. well except the orange or black wrapped rocks.

ljw, c'mon-is there a 3rd grader doing the question of the day?¿?

KsjKC 12 years, 5 months ago

You''ve completely run out of actual topics, haven't you? An arrest was made in the Boardwalk fire... USD 497 teachers can approve a raise of 8.1% on average--and still make less than other districts... Candy? Halloween Candy?

Sigh Reese's Pieces...

William Allen White is on the phone; he wants his name off the J-School on campus...

(Yes; I need caffeine in some form. But I am the first post so I get the rant rights..)

KsjKC 12 years, 5 months ago

Yeppers; that's the candy they serve in prisons...and church fall festival parties too, I think...

KsjKC 12 years, 5 months ago

They still make candy cigarettes--But you have to have ID and they are banned in Lawrence bars and restaurants...Use them while on a cell phone and you may be flogged..

A-Hem...Sorry: Yes--they still make them but they are harder to find. My Mom used them to help her stop smoking...

blessed3x 12 years, 5 months ago

Tomorrow's question:

Have you ever left the house wearing unmatched socks?

Feel free to use this one LJW. I won't even charge you royalties.

Jayhawk226 12 years, 5 months ago

I'll tell you which candy I definitely DON'T like...

...those little ones wrapped in that orange and black colored wax paper. Ugh, gross!!!

What are those anyway, wrapped rocks?

KsjKC 12 years, 5 months ago

I hear if you are smoking candy cigarettes while talking on your cell phone driving through a roundabout, the city commission can actually lawfully toss you into a veal cabinet for three days...

italianprincess 12 years, 5 months ago

The candies wrapped in the black and orange papers are peanut butter kisses. You have to be a peanut butter lover to like those. There kind of like taffy in a way I guess.

I'm a chocolate girl ( dark chocolate ) and like those little mini ones. Two bite chocolates is what I call them.

Always hated pixie sticks because they always break ( unless they came wrapped ) in your Halloween basket and you have sugar everywhere. YUCK!!!!!!!!!

Had a pony issue with the city yesterday, but got that taken care of real fast and we now have our two ponies back for pony rides. Never underestimate the power of very determined women when it comes to planning.

Have a great day everyone, its almost Friday!!!!!!!!!!

GreenEyedBlues 12 years, 5 months ago

Don't tell City Commission, but those little peanut butter thingies are sometimes called "Mary Janes".

My favorite Halloween candy are those little boxes of JuJuBees.

bankboy119 12 years, 5 months ago

Are you sure they haven't already banned ponies IP? I bet it's somewhere in the books...probably a little bit further back than balloon banning because the ponies were going to have a hard time getting through the roundabouts they had to build and eat the grass on top of them. Oh and they would just clutter up the street.

Best candy is definitely pop rocks.

lunacydetector 12 years, 5 months ago

i remember a house full of hippies that gave me a handful of dorrito's, some Easter eggs, and a pickle. radical times....radical times.

i like peanut m & m's.

Topside 12 years, 5 months ago

MAry Jane's/PB Kisses, candy corn, and snickers.

PS-don't confuse candy corn with it's ugly half-brother Indian corn, which is gross.

bankboy119 12 years, 5 months ago

How dare you say anything bad about the Natives! You racist!

thunderbuns 12 years, 5 months ago

Candy Corn??!!!

I wouldn't eat those with YOUR mouth!!! They're the "fruit cake" of candies. Gag me.........

sunflower_sue 12 years, 5 months ago

Since we live in the country, we drive into town to do our "begging for candy." The last stop we make is at our neighbor's house on the way home. He's not much into candy but always has GIANT candybars for the kiddies and tequila shooters for the "kids at heart." (If necessary, it's not a long walk home.)

hawkrew 12 years, 5 months ago

No way, candy corn is great. Especially the ones with the chocolate part instead of the yellow...

juscin3 12 years, 5 months ago

These posts are too funny! I'm glad to see that others have a great sense of humor. I know that co-workers here thought I was crazy, by laughin out loud. I really like the one about the id, on the cell phone and goin through the roundabout. Very clever! I think my fav. halloween candy is the snickers. What I don't understand is at halloween time, peeps make the candy for the kids, but they have to make the real funky kind. Why? Do you really think that people would really eat something that nasty??? My kids still would have candy left over from last year if I hadn't thrown it out.

Bankboy, That's what it says on the bag, kemosabe!

Topside 12 years, 5 months ago

hawkrew- That is the indian corn of which I speak.

juscin3 and all,- Snickers has got to be the most perfect candy ever! It has a little something for everyone and it does have some energy/quasi-nutritional benefits. Lot of olympic and track athletes eat them before or between races.

raven 12 years, 5 months ago

I love junk food. Anything chocolate is usually ok with me. It would be easier to list what I don't like. The peanut butter/Mary Janes (nasty), Candy Corn and appearantly Indian Corn (I didn't know there was a difference), and those peanut things that I have no idea what they are made of. Oh yeah, I don't like dark chocolate either.

ladysilk 12 years, 5 months ago

I am baffled the wax lips that still somehow make it into the candy bag every year. Who came up with that anyway? Chew on wax that tastes like cherry? I have candles at home that taste better. Favorite candy: the little honey candies, what are they called?

Redneckgal 12 years, 5 months ago

Russell Stover Pecan Log Rolls. Or anything with chocolate.

sunflower_sue 12 years, 5 months ago

Anyone interested in the bizarre:

I don't mean to sound critical, but could you really devote enough of yourself to that many children? My mom was one of 12 and from what I've gathered, I think not. Anyone???

Aiko 12 years, 5 months ago

I like butter. A whole lot of butter fro Halloween.

hottruckinmama 12 years, 5 months ago

reese's peanut butter cups or the york mints. or those little jr. mints.

rhd99 12 years, 5 months ago

Halloween candy favorite? Well, whether it's Halloween or any other day, M&M's always work for me.

Andrew Kong 12 years, 5 months ago

my favorite candies were the ones that turned your crap in to all sorts of spooky delights!! hey, that's a bat!! CREEEEEEEEEEPY CRAWLERS.

Topside 12 years, 5 months ago

ladysilk, you might be thinking of BIT-O-HONEYs they are a close cousin of the Mary Jane. Mary Jane's are better in their regular shape than in the Halloween orange and Black Wrappers.

ms_canada 12 years, 5 months ago

Not too much of a candy person but if you twist my arm I will eat one of those little OH Henry bars. Do you have them down there? We call those little rocks in the orange and black paper twists, taffy and also there is peanut butter taffy, I like those. I used to make caramel popcorn balls, wrap them in cling film and give them to the little beggars. One of my neighbour kids loved them so much he always came back later in the evening and asked, "Mrs. W. do you have any caramel corm balls left?" I got to saving one for him every year. But then of course some nasty jerks started putting razor blades and needles in home made candy so that was the end of my caramel corn as the mothers just threw them out. I personally think that Halloween should be abolished. banned in Lawrence. :o)

avhjmlk 12 years, 5 months ago

My dad and I are both lovers of coconut (i.e. Almond Joys and Mounds), but he would use his "paternal authority" ploy to remove all coconut-containing candy from our bags at the end of the night. My other siblings usually didn't mind so much, because they didn't have to coconut love like we do...

On a tangential topic, what is the best halloween costume you've ever seen? One year a kid came to our door (I was probably 5 or 6) dressed in a plumber's uniform wearing (yes, wearing), a paper mache toilet. The tank hung on his shoulders, and the bowl stuck out in front. If he pulled the string that was attached to where the flusher was supposed to be, the lid went up, and that's where he collected his candy. Ingenius!

avhjmlk 12 years, 5 months ago

Sorry, "didn't have THE coconut love..."

Linda Aikins 12 years, 5 months ago

Sue, I worked with a man in Topeka several years ago. I found out he and his wife just had their 10th son. 10 boys!!! The oldest boy is starting college this year and they have the newborn.

AND she homeschools them.

Ceallach 12 years, 5 months ago

Maple nut candies. I think Brach's is the maker.

Snickers? Hmmmm, I think Snickers are an anyday you are offered one type of candy:)

neopolss 12 years, 5 months ago

Thanks for removing my post LJW. Cowards as usual.

BTW, as for the whole razor blade issue, it is nothing more than an urban myth. The only documented case of it actually happening was by a relative of the child. But then again it is our unwillingness to actually look for truth (and prefer it to be handed to us) that will ultimately hold us back.

Staci Dark Simpson 12 years, 5 months ago

I like snickers and bottlecaps. I was so excited to find out bottle caps were still around. My mom only let us have pop after ball games so eating bottle caps was the next best. We better be careful or Halloween might get banned. You know a bunch of little pagan children running around in the streets eating excessive sugar. Hope the commish isn't reading this or it will be next. The best costumes I have seen is someone was a tornado. They wrapped tons of wire around themselves and put cows and tractors, etc on the outside of the twister. One year I was white trash. I wore a white trashbag and glued garbage all over it. I got many laughs especially at the bar. Halloween rules!!!!

kidster 12 years, 5 months ago

My 9-year-old has informed me that it is not the candy, but the size of the candy that is important. She already planned her route to include the guy that gave out the full-size candy bars last year.

Ceallach 12 years, 5 months ago

spacystaci8: where did you get the impression that the commish is not a pagan?

I was always ready to make the sacrifice if my children received too many Snickers in their sacks. (Wouldn't want them to eat too much chocolate and nuts:) It was a thankless job but someone had to do it.

avhjmlk 12 years, 5 months ago

Ahhh, bottlecaps. Didn't they come in soda flavors, like rootbeer and cream soda?

In consistency, they're a lot like sweet tarts (hard, but sort of powdery when you bite them), but they're shaped like bottlecaps (with scalloped edges, etc), and aren't sour.

avhjmlk 12 years, 5 months ago

Cellach--my dad was a big proponent of the "sacrifice." He was always willing to sacrifice and eat our candy.

We also had to dump our candy into a collective candy basket after a month or so, so that everyone could eat it, and so it wouldn't get lost under our beds attracting vermin of all sorts.

Ceallach 12 years, 5 months ago

Children don't usually see the wisdom in the "sacrifice" until they have little goblins of their own :)

avhjmlk 12 years, 5 months ago

I totally agree. We'll be doing lots of sacrificing for our 18month old this year. My husband's mother got her jack-o-lantern bucket to get candy this year, but first filled it with individual packs of mini-oreos, animal crackers, and goldfish. A very good idea!

Grundoon Luna 12 years, 5 months ago

Oh!! Ms. C!! Don't give the ban happy a$$e$ any ideas!! Samhain . . . not just for us pagans.

My favs: Reeces cups, Twix, Snickers, and Kit Kats. Meow!

thunderbuns 12 years, 5 months ago

my favorite:

Roger Eberts Mystery Log........

GreenEyedBlues 12 years, 5 months ago

I once dressed up as a member of the Lollipop Guild from the Wizard of Oz! I won "Sexiest Costume" at the late Captain Ribman's Meat Market. [God rest its meaty soul.]

This year I'm dressing up as Pinocchio. I bought a costume on eBay and everything! [Family-Friendly Link]

italianprincess 12 years, 5 months ago

I remember bottle caps.....didnt care for the cola flavored ones at all. The rootbeer ones were my fav and do they even sale them anymore?

Does anyone remember wax lips or teeth? I used to buy those and chew on pieces until the flavor went away.

nlf78 12 years, 5 months ago

I LOVED the root beer flavored bottle caps!! I actually bought some to give out on Hallowen!

avhjmlk 12 years, 5 months ago

I remember wax lips, too. They remind me a little too much of those wax-covered soda cups you get at certain cheap soda fountains (i.e. Kansas Union...)

Staci Dark Simpson 12 years, 5 months ago

I don't know where you buy bottle caps at this year but my son always gets them and I always swipe a few.
Yuck I hated wax candy. Did anyone ever buy the wax horse teeth when they were kids and stick them on your front teeth? That was too funny. I would do it now just to freak my 3 yr old out. Casey's still sells wax candy and it is disgusting!!

Kidster-Amen!! We know which houses hand out full size candy bars!!!

GreenEyedBlues 12 years, 5 months ago

Does anyone pull a Mrs. Flax [from the movie Mermaids] and give out toothpaste?

blessed3x 12 years, 5 months ago

Bottle caps are the best!! Especially the root beer.

If your kid gets a bunch of those crappy candy corns, through them into a jar with a bunch of peanuts. The mixture tastes just like a nut roll.

heh heh...I just said "nut roll".

GreenEyedBlues 12 years, 5 months ago

Awww I'm not using a nose! I'm a truthful Pinocchio. ;)

bearded_gnome 12 years, 5 months ago

favorite: chocolate peanut clusters...

socks, always match, though sometimes holey, or is it holy or wholey....hmmmm

next week's ljw headline: "city commission considers ban on mary janes" and a mob of enraged pot heads storms city hall. and, shoe store operators file letters of complaint. etc.

can the ljw come up with better questions?

OMB, your post still not removed.

finally, its now "native american corn." no thanks.

Jayhawk226 12 years, 5 months ago

I love the "treat bags" wrapped up....only to find 5 LOUSY pennies!

Boy, that'll go far!

I'll take my orange & black wax paper wrapped rocks after all.

avhjmlk 12 years, 5 months ago

I also prefer original candy corn to strange chocolate-topped varieties. Why mess with a good thing?

ms_canada 12 years, 5 months ago

Azure attitude - have no fear, it will never be banned. And neoplss - urban myth it is not. My children have brought apples home with parts of razor blades and plenty of needles and so had their friends, thus the giving out of apples in our neighbourhood, at least, was discontinued forever. S'truth. The kids won't even take them. I usually keep a jar of nickels and dimes near the door for the kids who come around with UNICEF boxes. Do you people have them down there?

Jayhawk226 12 years, 5 months ago

I saw the UNICEF boxes advertised this year....but I have never heard of the program on Halloween before this year.

juscin3 12 years, 5 months ago

OMB, TOO FUNNY!!! I think that would hurt! OUCHIE I wouldn't even wanna think about that one. And Bearded, make sure that your clusters is not made by Russell Stovers. Went to their store in Abilene, and bought some boxes of jelly beans and gummy bears, along with the low carb clusters, and OMGosh, talk about gas and goin number 2 a quite a few times. Something in that candy and eating too much of it, well, I think you all get the picture. Was kind enough to give a bag to my co-workers, and low and behold, three of them spent the night in the toilet because they didn't read the bag!!! LOL gotta love'em! :)~

bearded_gnome 12 years, 5 months ago

juscin...never had Rus sto's clusters, thanks for the warning! ... best come from local Penny Annie's.

have a good night all "God bless us, every one!"

oldfashiongirl 12 years, 5 months ago

Ref yesterday's flu bug question, I went out today and got my shot like all the other oldies that can currently get them.

sue, I, too, am one of 16 children my mom and dad had. Six died as infants, leaving 10 who survived to maturity, though 2 of those have died in past 2 years. We never went out at Halloween, as we lived far from any neighbors. The older boys would go off on horseback with other friends and they did naughty things like turning over the outdoor toilets of everyone. I have never gone trick or treating, but did enjoy some of the "spoils" my children gathered.

I think some questions for "on the street" should be:

  1. Do you think George Bush should be impeached for his reckless and incompentent way he runs things?

  2. Who do you think will run for President in 2008, both Democrat and Republican candidates?

  3. What would be your proposal for getting rid of the large national debt we have?

  4. Do you think the congress will get rid of the large tax rebates to the already weathy few?

  5. Do you think they will shelve the Medicare Perscription program? (attended a seminar on the new drug benefit program and was more confused after it than I was before I went in.)

  6. How do you propose to get our boys out of Iraq?

  7. Should the U.S. begin to build more nuclear power stations now to prepare for shortages in years to come?

  8. What do you think of the flat tax rate that Steve Forbes has been promoting all these years?

  9. Are you satisfied with the way our country is being run?

  10. What is your solution to the problems that the world is facing today?

Hope LJW asks some of these. I really enjoy the chit chat and humor expressed in this forum.
