Do you think it’s OK for the FBI to keep records on the people who flew in the months before Sept. 11?
Asked at Southwind 12, 3433 Iowa on January 15, 2005
“I have some concerns about the invasion of privacy. People should be able to travel freely in this county without looking over their shoulder for the FBI.”
“It will make it a little bit more safe. They wouldn’t just be letting anyone on the airplanes. As long as they keep it within reason, it’s OK.”
“I think given what the FBI is like right now, I’m OK with it, but that answer could change any day.”
“I would say yes. If they are just using the information for security purposes, and not to negatively affect the lives of those people in any way.”

I don't want the FBI having any access to my flight patterns. I mean - they might become suspicious that I flew to Chicago two days before 911 to buy some Gino's East pizza, catch a Cubs game, then flew back to KCI. Wow - they might start looking into my library records, then the next thing you know, they are invading my Blockbuster video rentals and figure out that I rented the movie “Airplane” just months before 911. Oops. Didn't mean to say that! Hope that doesn't convict me of any crimes.
Good grief people. Why worry about the FBI? Let the good men and women of the Federal Bureau of investigation do their job without hindering their ability to protect American's. If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about! Do American's have that many skeletons in their closet that they fear what the FBI might find out about them? Wasn't there a song back in the 70's that went something like this - Paranoia will destroy ya! Who sang that song? The Kinks???

Why would they need to know this? What gain or purpose would this serve to collect or have this information? It just seems like less of a waste of time to not worry so much about who gets on the planes, as providing solid security on the planes themselves. 9/11 wouldn't have happened if security had been better. After all, they were only armed with freak'n box cutters.

The secret is that the FBI is now an agency for collecting information for Corporations that send out spam and junk mail. The job of the FBI is to collect persoal information about Americans so they can sell it to these corporations. The only thing that giving up our right to privacy will mean is more junk mail. I'm all for it!

While I agree that there is a need for increased security on airline flights, I do not belive it is a good idea for the FBI to be the sole agency to keep such information. In fact, I belive that the information should be kept (and collected) by an an independent agency that ONLY allowed to disclose ANY information gathered when (or if) a subject is found to be a risk.
Allowing a governmental agency with such broad investigative powers as the FBI to be the collector (and keeper) of this information would increase the probability of use outside of airline security matters.

P.S. Merkin: do a little investigating yourself - many of the hijackers were already under investigation by the FBI and they still managed to commit their act of self -martyrdom.

Dracul - do some investigation yourself. If the FBI wasn't handcuffed, they probably could have prevented 911. Could it be that the Patriot Act has provided much aid to government agencies and their work in keeping America safe? Secondly, I can only assume that you are a democrat since you wish to create another agency to handle the information collected. Another agency at the cost of tax payers. Just let the FBI do their job. Have you even seen an FBI agent in your town? If so, more than once? Probably not. Doesn't everyone believe that the FBI has too many other things to worry about than the average American? Again, paranoia will destroy ya!!!!!!!

Merkin: You just know that I'm on to you, don't you. Nothing that I wrote justifies the intensity of the derision in your response, and you have to know that.

Hey Libery,
I think all American workers and soldiers in Iraq should have a chip put under their skin. If I were over there, I'd want one. If kidnapped, the Marines could find and rescue you in a heart beat. It isn't like major surgery to insert one. You could watch them insert it if paranoia was getting the best of you.
