Do you think the phrase “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional?
Asked at Massachusetts Street on June 15, 2004
“No. You don’t have to say it.”
“No, I don’t think it’s unconstitutional. Our country was founded on that phrase, and I think it should stay that way.”
“I don’t know constitutional law well enough to say, but I think it’s unnecessary. It was added on in the ‘50s and doesn’t need to be there.”
“It depends on how you take it. If you think that there’s something wrong with it, you will. If you don’t, you won’t.”
