Nancy J. Whitehouse

Memorial Mass for Nancy Whitehouse, 84, of Lawrence will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 11, 2017 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. She passed away Sunday, September 3, 2017 at her home. Nancy Jean Hazzard was born November 28, 1932 in Wellsville, NY, the daughter of Leon Howard Hazzard and Julia Anna Schulz Hazzard. She graduated Wellsville High School and attended college at the State University of New York at Albany, graduating with degrees in Mathematics and English, and taught afterward. On August 4, 1956, she married her husband of 61 years, Alan Brack Whitehouse, in Wellsville, NY. They enjoyed many happy (and extremely busy!) years together raising seven children. In later years, when her children were grown, Nancy returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher. She enjoyed an active circle of friendships and many hobbies, including sewing, reading, participating in several social clubs, and volunteering in various school, church and community activities. She was an avid Jayhawks basketball fan. Throughout retirement she devoted even more time to family, friends and hobbies, and enjoyed many years of attending concerts to hear Alan’s saxophone playing with several local bands, much as she did when she and Alan were dating during college. She will be lovingly remembered for her compassion, quick wit, and sense of humor. She was an exceptionally devoted wife, mother and Nana, and her family will remember her for making each one of them feel special and cherished. She was preceded in death by her brother, Noel and sister, Joanie. She is survived by her husband Alan and children, Barbara (Randy) Westerdale; Susan (Robert) Doss; Valerie Bartels; Richard (Jennifer) Whitehouse; Robert (Sabine) Whitehouse; Thomas (Heidi) Whitehouse; and Laurie (Gordon) Snyder; along with seventeen grandchildren and many extended family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in her name to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence. Memorials may be sent in care of WarrenMcElwain Mortuary.
