Edward Paul Scholtes

Ed Scholtes, 71, died at home in Lawrence on July 21, 2017. He was born June 29, 1946, in South Bend, Indiana, and was a graduate of St. Joseph (Michigan) High School class of 1964, Lake Michigan College class of 1967, and Western Michigan University class of 1969. In 1969 Ed joined the US Air Force and served at Indian Mountain Long Range Radar Station in Alaska until 1973. He worked as a freight broker for Whirlpool in Michigan, transferring to Ft. Smith, Arkansas. He continued working as a freight broker for various truck lines in Missouri and Kansas until he retired in 2002.
Since 1999 he lived in Lawrence, Kansas, where he played as much golf as humanly possible, partied with his golfing buddies at Alvamar and the Jayhawk Men’s Club, cheered on the KU Jayhawks, played guitar and ukulele, and hung out at home in East Lawrence. His quick wit and playful spirit will be greatly missed.
He is survived by Andrea Zuercher, his longtime companion; a brother, William Joseph Scholtes (Ange Heckert), Henderson, NV; a sister, Susan Hedger, Watervliet, MI; a daughter, Amy Catherine Scholtes Martin (Doug), Fayetteville, AR; sons Mark Edward (Emily), Bella Vista, AR; Jeffrey Paul (Erin), Ft. Smith, AR, and Phillip Joseph (Amy), Little Rock, AR; a niece, Lori Hedger Van Arkel, Watervliet; a nephew, William Edward Scholtes, Benton Harbor, MI; eight grandchildren and three grandnieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Joseph and Ileen Ruth (Burgoyne).
There are no services planned. Arrangements by the Neptune Society of Kansas City. Memorial donations may be made in Ed’s name to Veterans for Peace or The First Tee.
