Alberta Cornwell Mahoney

Alberta Cornwell Mahoney, 90, of Kansas City, KS, died Saturday, October 22, 2016 at her home surrounded by her children. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am Friday, October 28th at the Cathedral of St. Peter, 416 N. 14th St. Kansas City, KS 66102. Rosary will be prayed at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27th followed by a visitation from 57 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Peter. Private family committal service to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, KS. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to Sisters Servants of Mary, or to the Bill and Alberta Mahoney Scholarship Fund, c/o Bishop Ward High School. Alberta was born January 21, 1926 in Emporia, KS to Albert and Lela Hush Cornwell (died 1930) and raised in Emporia by her loving stepmother, Helen Dewhurst Cornwell, from age 10. She graduated from Emporia High School in 1943. When the family moved to Lawrence, KS, Alberta attended KU and was a cheerleader, worked for Phog Allen, and graduated with a BS in Bacteriology in 1947, after which she did bacteriology research at the university. She married Bill Mahoney in 1949, and raised five children in the Jayhawk tradition. Alberta leaves her brother Charles Cornwell (Mary) in Lawrence, KS; and her five loving children and 10 grandchildren.
