Fredrick James Smith

Fredrick (Fred) James Smith 85, Lawrence passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015. He was born October 24, 1929, to H. Karl and Madge (Bailey) Smith of Osborne, KS. He graduated from Osborne High School in 1948. He received a Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University in 1960. He served four years in the United States Air Force. Fred was an architect for Shaver and Company; Wilson and Company, Engineers and Architects in Salina; and spent five years working in Wichita. He retired in Salina in 1994.
Fred married Patricia (Pat) Hyde in 1957. They lived in Salina for fifty-two years and moved to Lawrence in 2011. He was a member of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and the Trinity Lutheran Church. He had many interests but the time spent with his family was the most special.
He is survived by his wife, Pat, two children – Creighton (Linda) Smith of Spokane, WA. and Lynnea (Wayne) Kaufman of Lawrence, grandsons Allen (Chelsea) Burkart of Wichita and Thomas Kaufman of Lawrence; two brothers-in-law Rex (Jeani) Hyde and Robert (Charlene) Hyde of Osborne; and many nieces and nephews by marriage and their children.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or Douglas County Visiting Nurses and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
A private family inurnment will be held Friday, May 29th. Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 30th at the Warren – McElwain Mortuary, 120 West 13th Street, Lawrence, Kansas.
