Lois Ann Llewellyn

Lois Ann (Nieman) Llewellyn departed this life on April 18th. She was born in Nortonville, Kansas on August 10th, 1930 along with her twin sister Doris, joining older siblings, Edward, Naomi and Elaine, to parents Margaret and Edward Nieman.
She attended Pittsburg State Teachers College and earned a Master’s Degree at the University of Kansas.
While at Pittsburg State she met H.E., “Lew”, Llewellyn at a “back to school” dance. They were married in1953 and moved to Lawrence in the summer of 1957. Lois soon began her 22 year- long career in the Lawrence School system teaching special needs children.
After her retirement from teaching, she served as the first Executive Director of Trinity Community Services, now Trinity in Home Care.
In 1978 Lois and Lew were awarded the Kiwanis Kansas Builder of Families Award. Lois received numerous recognition for her service and dedication to the community including: the FOE Eagle of the Year, Wallace Galluzzi Volunteer Award, Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Kansas District Teacher of the Year and Trinity in Home Care 2013 Inspirata award given to those who have given of themselves to lead, inspire and further the quality of life for older citizens. Since 1957 she was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran church, and dedicated to the Lutheran Women’s Mission League. She served as the Kansas State President of that League for 4 years beginning in 2000.
She is survived by her loving husband Lew and five children, Beth Llewellyn, Sally Kirkpatrick (Mike), Herb Llewellyn (Lori), Amy Wilson (Mark), and Matt Llewellyn who were blessed by her patience, understanding and strong faith.
She is also survived by two sisters; Doris Coen of Hutchison and Elaine Saffels of Topeka. Grandchildren Justin and Megan Kirkpatrick, Caitlin Killian and Gareth Llewellyn, Kensley and Ben Wilson, and Samuel and Max Llewellyn. Great grandchildren Cash and Lannie Kate Killian, and Morgan Belle Kirkpatrick.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lawrence. There will be a reception following the service and then burial will follow at the Nortonville Cemetery in Nortonville, Kansas.
The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts are gratefully requested for the Kansas District Lutheran Women’s Mission League or Immanuel Lutheran Church or to the charity of your choose and can be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
