Ella Irene Buhler Miller 1914 - 2013 Pretty Prairie, KS

ELLA IRENE BUHLER MILLER was born on May 23, 1914 to Helen J. Hansmann and David B. Buhler, M.D. in Pretty Prairie, Kansas. Her father was a well-known physician having been one of the first graduates of KU Medical School in 1904.
She was one of seven brothers and sisters, three of which preceded her in death, Esther Buhler Paxton, Victor B. Buhler, M.D., and Everett E. Buhler. She is survived by Helen Buhler Ossmann, Geraldine Buhler Smith and spouse, Glee S. Smith, Jr., Carol Buhler Francis and Spouse, George W. Francis. Her life in Pretty Prairie, Kansas was one of much activity in the schools and church, followed by her attending college at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas where she met her future husband, Gerald Lee Miller, M.D. of Grenola, Kansas. There were married in 1942.
Her husband was actively involved in many local, national, and international medical organizations and she followed by involving herself in many of the supporting auxiliaries to various medical organizations i.e. President of Jackson County Medical Society Auxiliary and various offices in Missouri State Auxiliary. She volunteered in many related organizations.
She was quite involved at her church, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, as she served on the Altar Guild, acted as chairman of the boys’ and girls’ choir, she was an officer of the Trinity Guild and served as a sacristan at the St. Luke’s chapel among a few of her spiritual activities. She served as president of the parents’ associations of both the former Pembroke Country Day and Sunset Hill where her children, Jerry Miller, Jr. and Sheila Miller Long attended respectively.
She was a dedicated docent at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art for 37 years as well as a member of the Society of Fellows at the same museum. At the Nelson-Atkins Museum she spent many happy years of learning, volunteering, as well as teaching visitors of all ages. She had many fond memories and dear friends from that experience.
She is survived by her two children, Gerald Lee Miller, Jr., M.D. and his wife Brigitte Miller of Mission Hills, Kansas and her daughter, Sheila Miller Long and her husband W. Audie Long of Dallas, Texas. She was “MeeMaw” to her four grandchildren, Gerald G. Miller (and wife, Cecile Favand) now of Belfort France, Ursula Miller, M.D. (and husband, Seth Sweetser, M.D.) of Rochester, Minnesota, Justin M. Long (and wife Sheldon Rockwood Long, M.D.) of Austin, Texas and Monica L. Long of Dallas, Texas. She was great grandmother to eight great grandchildren. Memorial services will be 1:00 pm Saturday, August 24, 2013 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 6401 Wornall Terrace, Kansas City, MO 64113.
