Lavon Marie (Peters) McCormick Martin

Lavon Marie (Peters) McCormick Martin passed peacefully in her sleep at home in Chappell Hill, Texas, on her 87th birthday. Born September 30, 1924 in Burley, Idaho to Harry S. and Lena I. (Hubbard) Peters, Lavon grew up in Minneapolis, Kansas. A graduate of the University of Kansas, she was employed at Gulf Oil in Ft. Worth, Texas, until her marriage to J. D. McCormick of Grapevine, Texas. They had two daughters, Donna Claire and Carey Anne.
Widowed in 1954, she returned to Minneapolis, Kansas, until she was employed in 1959 as Research Assistant to Dr. R. C. Moore of the Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology for the United States Geological Survey at KU.
In 1977 she married Claude F. Martin of Pratt, Kansas, and Houston, Texas. They were employed with Shell Oil and Getty Oil in Houston until retirement. Their retirement home property was their pride and joy.
Lavon was preceded in death by her husband J. D. McCormick, her husband Claude F. Martin, her sister Kerma L. Bremerman, and her daughter Carey A. McCormick. She is survived by her daughter, Donna C. McCormick and husband Gregory Sims of Lawrence, Kansas; her step-son and wife, Michael and Vangie Martin of Kerrville, Texas; her step-daughter, Claudia (Martin) Baird of Weatherford, Texas; brother-in-law, Jack Bremerman of Minneapolis, Kansas; and 3 nieces: Lee Ann (Bremerman) DuVall of Franklin, Tennessee, Susan (Bremerman) Adkins of Minneapolis, Kansas, and Poppe Marsha (McCormick) Weaver of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Graveside services will be at Highland Cemetery, 2:00 pm, Thursday, October 13, 2011.
