Alma Lou Smith

Smith, Alma Lou, 85, of Pompano Beach, FL, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2010. Born on March 3, 1925, in Kaw City, OK, to Thomas and Doris Harp, she resided in Baldwin City, KS, before recently moving to South Florida to live with her son and daughter in law.
She graduated from Hays High School in Hays Kansas in May 1942 then attended Business College in Oklahoma City. She then returned to Pratt Kansas where she went to work at the Pratt Air Base.
Alma married John Richard Smith in 1943 and later had two children, John T. Smith born October 26th, 1946, and Gary L. Smith born June 27th, 1956. After an accident took her husband in November of 1956 Alma raised her two sons and eventually went to work for the University of Kansas in Lawrence where she later retired. Alma loved the outdoors and was always willing to take any adventure she could. For her, there was nothing she could not do.
Family members who preceded Alma in death were: Her husband John R. Smith, her mother and father Thomas and Doris Harp, her two sisters Betty Lee Harp and Pasty Jean Lesher, and son John T. Smith. Alma is survived by her loving son, Gary L. (Jessy) Smith; grandchildren, Kelley, John, Brittaney and Nicholas; great-grandchildren, Max, Ben, Izzy, Matthew, Alexis, John Lewis, Tiffany, Chelsey, Chris, Jacquelyn and Bella; and her loving dog Echo.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, May 17th, 1:00 p.m. at the Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend, KS.
