Manhattan – Funeral services for Margaret E. Rice, 86, Manhattan, will be at 2 p.m. today at Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel in Manhattan. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery.Mrs. Rice died Monday, April 23, 2007, at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.She was born July 8, 1920, in Agenda, the daughter of Fred and Daisy Brewer Lisher. She grew up and attended school in Lawrence. She was a resident of Manhattan since 1949.Mrs. Rice taught in a one-room school for many years in Happy Hollow. She worked at Kansas State University Army ROTC from 1949 to 1965. She later became chief of U.S. Army ROTC cadet personnel at Fort Riley for 14 years and retired in 1984.She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion auxiliaries, National Association of Miniature Enthusiast, National Button Society, life member of the Manhattan Women’s Bowling Association, a charter member of the Manhattan Women’s Bowling Hall of Fame in 2001, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Toy Dish Collectors and the Riley County Genealogical Society.Mrs. Rice served in many positions on the Manhattan Women’s Bowling Association Board from 1954 to 1966. She won several city bowling titles, was a charter member of the 600 Club, served as the association scrapbook historian for more than 40 years and organized the Manhattan Youth Bowling Program in 1959 in association with the American Youth Bowling Association.She married Glenn H. Rice on June 27, 1943, in Wichita. He died Feb. 3, 1970.Mrs. Rice was also preceded in death by an infant son, Howard Glenn Rice.Survivors include a son, Derald Rice, Fort Collins, Colo.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.The family suggests memorials to the Rice Scholarship Fund for Manhattan Youth Bowling, sent in care of the funeral home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan 66502.Online condolences may be sent at www.ymlfuneralhome.com.
