Jeanne Fridell, principal of Woodlawn Elementary School, plans to retire after the end of the school year.

The school district announced in a news release Monday that Fridell’s retirement comes after 13 years at the North Lawrence school.

“After 40 years in education, making the decision to step away from my ‘home away from home’ is one of the hardest decisions I have ever made,” Fridell said in the release. “… I am proud of the warm, caring community of learners we have at Woodlawn.”

Before her time at Woodlawn, Fridell taught for nine years in Buhler and Ottawa. She then served 18 years in various positions in Manhattan Public Schools before joining Woodlawn for the 2006-07 school year.

The district will immediately seek to fill the position, according to the release. Fridell’s retirement, effective June 30, is still pending school board approval.
