Updated at 11:35 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019:

A 68-year-old woman was severely injured after being struck by a vehicle Saturday evening at the intersection of Sixth and Michigan streets, Lawrence police said.

Officer Drew Fennelly said in an email to the Journal-World that at 7:34 p.m. Saturday, a Chevrolet Trailblazer, driven by a 45-year-old man, was northbound on Michigan Street and turning westbound onto Sixth Street when it struck the woman in the crosswalk.

The woman was taken by air ambulance to a Kansas City-area trauma center, Fennelly said. Later Saturday night, he said the woman’s condition had been downgraded, and her injuries were considered life-threatening.

As of 11:35 p.m. Saturday, the intersection and the surrounding area were closed to traffic, a reporter on the scene observed.

The investigation is still in its early stages, and officers don’t yet know whether impairment was a contributing factor, Fennelly said. He said the driver stayed on scene and was cooperative with police.
