A line of cars moves along Highway 40 near the Lawrence Municipal Airport on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018 in blizzard conditions.

Sunday’s blizzard and icy roads played a part in more than two dozen car wrecks in Douglas County, said Officer Shawn Gross, a spokesman for the Lawrence Police Department.

Law enforcement agencies received calls for 27 car wrecks throughout the county on Sunday. Two of the wrecks caused injuries, but they were not life-threatening, Gross said. As of 4 p.m., three wrecks had occurred on Monday, none of which caused injury.

The Lawrence area received about 4 inches of snow on Sunday. Areas northwest of Lawrence received much more, said Kyle Poage, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Topeka. Areas between Manhattan and Seneca received 7 inches to a foot of snow, he said.

Although some main roads in Douglas County were cleared of snow Monday morning, others were still snowpacked, including parts of I-70 and residential roadways.

“Though city, county and state road crews have done a great job treating and clearing roads in Douglas County over the last 24 hours, we still encourage people to drive cautiously today since the roads still have snow and ice on them in sections,” said Sgt. Kristen Channel of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The weather in Lawrence will be mostly sunny the next few days, which will likely help melt some of the snow. Temperatures are expected to remain in the low 30s Monday and Tuesday.

“Even if it’s not that warm, the sun will help a little bit,” Poage said.

The temperature is expected to rise to the high 30s and low 40s on Wednesday, but rain or snow could return to the area later this week, he said.

As of Monday afternoon, the National Weather Service forecast shows a 20 percent chance of rain Friday afternoon and a 70 percent chance of rain or snow Friday evening and all day Saturday.
