Community invited to dog parade and birthday party this weekend

A parade and birthday party for Lawrence dogs and their owners will be held this weekend, according to a news release from the Lawrence Humane Society.

The Dogust Birthday Parade will include treats, crafts and games for dogs and their owners Saturday at Burcham Park, 200 Indiana St. Owners and their dogs are also encouraged to come in costume to participate in a dog parade on the Lawrence Loop trail section at Burcham Park.

Friends of Lawrence Area Trails, the Lawrence Humane Society and Pet World are hosting the event, which is being held this month to mark the universal birthday for shelter dogs, Aug. 1. The event is free to the public, but attendees are encouraged to bring a donation for the shelter, such as creamy peanut butter, meaty dog treats, Kong toys, bleach, paper towels or laundry detergent. Dogs should be vaccinated, leashed and well-behaved.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Burcham Park.
