Meet the 2018 male Athlete of the Year finalists

Jon Bock, Eudora

A talented midfielder for the Cardinals’ soccer team, Bock earned second-team all-state honors. The senior, who was a kicker for the football team, was capable of scoring from just about anywhere on the field with his speed. On the track, Bock has emerged as one of the Frontier League’s top javelin throwers and high jumpers.

Trey Huslig, Veritas Christian

Leading the Eagles to their second consecutive KCAA Class 2 state basketball title, Huslig was named MVP of the state tournament. The junior sharpshooter averaged 13.1 points and 2.9 assists per game. On the gridiron, Huslig starred at running back and receiver, accumulating 1,113 total yards and 17 touchdowns. At cornerback, he had 49 tackles.

Dalton Kellum, Perry-Lecompton

Engineering a high-powered offense at quarterback, Kellum earned all-Big Seven League honors with 1,555 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns. Through the air, he added 1,295 passing yards. The 5-foot-10 junior, who led his football team to a 7-4 record, added 40 tackles at defensive back. In track, he stars in the 100-meter dash.

Dante Jackson, Lawrence

Jackson was named the Sunflower League’s co-Most Valuable Player in football, leading the Lions to a 5-5 record as a dual-threat quarterback. Signed to play at Northern Colorado, the 5-foot-8 senior rushed for 1,215 yards and 12 touchdowns while throwing for another 974 yards and 13 touchdowns. He added all-league recognition as a punt returner.

LeeRoi Johnson, Tonganoxie

One of the top discus throwers in state history, Johnson signed to compete in track at Arkansas State. The 6-foot-2 senior has ranked among the state’s leaders in the discus and shot put throughout his prep career. In football, Johnson was an all-Kaw Valley League selection as a defensive lineman with seven sacks and 12 tackles for loss.

Stephen Johnson, Lawrence

A first-team all-state selection, Johnson won a pair of Class 6A swimming titles in his senior season. Johnson, who owns multiple school records, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.74 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:41.68 to lead the Lions to 11th place at the state meet. Johnson signed to swim in college at South Dakota.

Garrett Luinstra, Free State

Averaging 19 points per game, Luinstra led the Firebirds to their first Class 6A state basketball title game appearance. Selected as the Sunflower League’s Player of the Year, Luinstra guided his team to a second straight league championship with his strong shooting. The 6-foot-3 senior, who scored 36 points in the season opener, will walk on at Kansas.

Henry Nelson, Bishop Seabury

Continuing to break his own program record throughout the fall, Nelson finished fourth in the Class 2A state cross country meet. Only a sophomore, Nelson won six of the nine races he entered, including a regional championship. Nelson, who came off of the bench for the school’s boys basketball team, lowered his school-record 5K time to 16:05.

Korbin Riedel, Tonganoxie

Placing second in the Class 4A state wrestling tournament at 138 pounds, Riedel led the Chieftains to fourth place in the team standings, their highest finish in school history. The junior matched his program record with 43 wins this season, earning regional and Kaw Valley League titles. For the football team, he ran for 793 yards and nine touchdowns.
