Baker softball edges Corban, falls to Marian at NAIA tournament

The Baker softball team split its first two games in the opening round Bowling Green bracket of the NAIA tournament on Monday.

The Wildcats upended Corban, 2-1, before falling to Marian, 10-4.

After the Corban took a 1-0 lead in the second inning against the Wildcats, Eva Gonzalez tied it up with an RBI double in the fourth. The Wildcats scored another run in the fourth on an error, and that was all that BU ace Olivia Brees needed to get the victory.

Brees — who leads the NAIA in strikeouts — allowed one run on four hits while going the distance in the circle. The Baker junior struck out nine and walked four.

Baker rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth against Marian to cut its deficit to 5-4, but the Knights answered with a five-spot in the top of the seventh to help put the Wildcats away.

Megan Porche had a hit and two RBIs to lead the Wildcats. Jazzmine Thorpe and Makayla Stromenger collected two hits apiece.

Baker will face Corban again at 1 p.m. today in a win-or-go-home matchup.
