Letter to the editor: Disgraceful proposals

March 5, 2018

To the editor,

The proposals by Wayne La Pierre (NRA President), Donald Trump and others of their ilk are a disgrace and need to be called out for what they are: cowardly, insufficient and communistic. They think that arming each and every one of our school teachers with guns is enough to protect our children from mass shooters while at the same time they say that the more guns that there are in a school the less likely it is that a deranged, white male, mass shooter will attack! They refuse to make the proposal that will make a difference! Isn’t it obvious? Rather than providing our children with books, pencils and computers, we must demand that our tax funds be used to supply each and every child, upon entering kindergarten, with a Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol, including as many loaded ammunition magazines that can be stuffed into their desks. I don’t do the hashtag thing but will someone please start one for me?

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Reuters) – The Florida Senate rejected a proposal to ban assault weapons, and voted for a measure to arm some teachers, weeks after 17 people were killed in the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history.

An amendment that would have banned assault weapons attached to a wider bill failed on Saturday in a largely party-line vote, in response to the Feb. 14 killing of 14 students and three faculty at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Parkland.

"ilk", LOLZ! BTW, Mitch, I don't think any reasonable person would call the NRA a communistic organization. Also "...Rather than providing our children with books, pencils and computers, we must demand that our tax funds be used to supply each and every child, upon entering kindergarten, with a Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol, including as many loaded ammunition magazines that can be stuffed into their desks..." Outside your fevered imagination, nobody is calling for Glocks for each student.

Yes, arming every teacher is an asinine, idea, good thing no one has actually proposed it, or mentioned it in any way, shape, or form, which makes me wonder why the LJW let you post this letter since it's based on something that doesn't exist.

Every little mud show needs a geek to draw in a crowd. Before he stopped posting so often Fred was filling that role.

Brock Masters 1 month, 2 weeks ago

They allow it because it supports their agenda.

Truth doesn’t matter as long as what is said or written furthers the political move to disarm the people.

"Yes, arming every teacher is an asinine, idea",

Yes exactly AK. Firearms should be kept as far away from congenital Liberals as possible.

Good lord. What a catastrophe that would be. These Liberals cannot even train the students to break the world wide top twenty in Math, Science and reading, let alone train themselves to shoot straight?

WOW what a disaster that would be!!

It is important to note that the LTE writer didn’t offer any solutions to preventing school shootings. Hyperbole and lies will not solve the problem.

Armed security along with other security measures will stop school shootings.

I don’t advocate for arming teachers - let them teach but spend the money to hire professional security, install metal detectors and cameras to protect our children.

Yes, let's have Betty DeVos get her brother Eric Prince owner of Blackwater (a private mercenary army security LLC) a inside contract. That is the level of training that be effective, teachers that can shoot the bullseye out of a target10 out 10 isnt going to work,, targets don't shoot back while alarms are ringing, children are screaming, and bullets flying back at you at about 1 per second

Brandon Devlin 1 month, 2 weeks ago

Well, let's see. . .as Betsy DeVos' brother Erik Prince is no longer the owner or CEO of Academi (since Blackwater (later renamed Xe) no longer exists) . . .

The answer to this problem is simple. Harden our schools just like we do all public venues, and access to our state capitol and many buildings. We are already paying for hardened buildings public and private thru our taxes & prices we pay for goods.

Additionally, some school administrations & teachers don't believe arming teachers, and preparing them for aggressive behavior is a bad idea. Read the following article from Florida to learn more.

http://krqe.com/2018/03/04/metro-area-teachers-take-self-defense-active-shooter-training-into-their-own-hands/

I also ask, why are our athletic venues, college & professional, hardened, but not our schools & university's?

There is an old expression about "Dumb Jocks". Really?

It works well in Israel. I do not recall a school shooting there.

Are these guns in Israeli schools ?........ or Palestinian schools ?

And doesn't compulsory israeli military service for all create teachers who are familiar with guns and their use .

From its' creation in 1948 Israel has been a war in progress, so Israelis have a common external enemy and i don't think that they have the time on their hands that Americans seem to have to run around killing each other .

Israelis killing each other is what will occur if they ever make peace with the arabs.....it will be right wing orthodox jews against their less religiously obsessed fellow jews......sort of like Saul who became Paul who early on did persu and persecute the Christian Jews .

I went thru grade school and high school in KCMO and we never had school shootings nor did the teachers have guns........what has changed but semi automatic rifles, guns and bump stock like devices in the busy hands of the mentally insane becaused the NRA pushed it as their no check'em or stop them gun rights .

Monkey see, Monkey do......Monkey do it unto others......... without a conscience to turn off the impulse to do something murderous .

Charles L. Bloss, Jr. 1 month, 2 weeks ago

Israeli schools, with an accompanying outside sign saying that teachers are armed and will protect students. Look it up.

Why do Republicans think that their way is the only way?

Bob Smith 1 month, 2 weeks ago

Based on Israel's example, it seems to work. The model that was followed in Broward County failed in a spectacular fashion.

Ken Lassman 1 month ago

All young Israeli men and women undergo training in their mandatory tours in the Israeli Armed Forces, and many continue to serve in regular tours of their reserves, which all citizens are also a part of on an inactive basis until they are 40. Their security needs are very different as is their training, so comparing teachers in Israel and the US is not legitimate.
