Black Hills warns customers of phone scam

Black Hills Energy has received customer reports of bill payment scams.

Scammers tell customers they are past due on their account and that their service will be disconnected without immediate payment, according to a news release from Black Hills. Scammers have also told customers they have overpaid and that they must provide their personal bank account or credit card information to receive a refund.

Black Hills also warns the perpetrators are becoming more sophisticated, and manipulating caller ID or leaving a call-back number with a recording that mimics a utility’s phone system message and options.

Black Hills advises customers with concerns to call its service associates at 888-890-5554 to verify the legitimacy of requests for payment history, amounts due or whether an employee was dispatched to their location. Payment options and account access also are available at blackhillsenergy.com. Employment can also be verified by Black Hills Energy’s 24-hour emergency line at 800-694-8989.
