Letter to the editor: An honorable man

To the editor:

I read recently in USA Today how Sen. John McCain had been insulted by Donald Trump and his staff, as well as Fox analyst Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney. He was accused of not really being a hero and called “Songbird John” because he supposedly broke under torture.

Regardless, whether you were for or against the Vietnam War, you have to accept McCain as an American hero. He was a young man following orders assuming his country was in the right. He was shot down and held prisoner. He suffered greatly under torture, and I personally would not blame him if he did indeed break. I can’t even begin to imagine what he endured. Donald Trump has the guts to insult this man. While McCain was imprisoned, Trump received numerous deferments and was partying, while McCain was suffering. I would love to see how long Trump or McInerney would hold up and not break under the torture that McCain endured. Although it seems now that Sen. McCain may have little time left, we remember him for what he is. Sen. McCain is an American hero. He is a really dignified gentleman with unquestionable integrity who had a lifetime of serving his country. He followed his conscience and did not insult those who disagreed with him. His many honorable attributes are quite foreign to the Trumps of the world.
