East knocks off West in Shrine Bowl

Free State senior quarterback Gage Foster is lifted up in the air by Jalan Robinson after a touchdown against Olathe Northwest on Thursday at College Boulevard Activity Center.

The East team claimed the 45th annual Shrine Bowl with a 21-14 victory over the West team Saturday at Carnie Smith Stadium.

Gage Foster, a former Free State linebacker, contributed to the team’s victory as the lone area athlete in the event. Foster served as a coverage linebacker, a position he plans to play at Baker University this fall.

The East team jumped out to a 21-0 advantage in the first half before the West team surged back in the second half. The West team nearly finished off the comeback with a game-tying drive late in the fourth quarter, though the East team halted the attempt.

With the win, the East team has now won three of the last four meetings in the annual event.
