Woman driving stolen car arrested after west Lawrence chase, search

A woman was booked into the Douglas County Jail after a Saturday morning chase in west Lawrence.

Ashley Laura Lee Nelson, 38, of Kansas City, Mo., was booked into jail on suspicion of reckless driving, driving with a revoked or suspended license, driving a vehicle with an unreadable license plate, fleeing or eluding a law enforcement officer and possession of stolen property.

Kansas Highway Patrol officer Aaron Pressnell said the chase started about 8 a.m. Saturday when he saw a vehicle at West Sixth Street and Congressional Drive with a license plate bent so that the lower portion was unreadable. The chase continued west on Sixth Street and through northwest Lawrence until the driver abandoned the vehicle, which was reported stolen Thursday in Topeka, Pressnell said.

Officers from the KHP, Lawrence Police Department, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Wildlife and Parks joined in a search for the driver, Pressnell said. Nelson was arrested shortly after 9 a.m. near North 1750 Road and Kansas Highway 10.
