Firebirds edge Lions for team title with win in 400 free relay

Free State's Claire Campbell cuts through the water as she competes in the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle event of a quad on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center.

Not confined to the pool alone, flurries of activity often poured onto the surrounding walkway in between races Thursday at Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center. Swimmers from both Lawrence High and Free State had to stay up to date on the scores, with neither rival able to distance itself from the other in points.

Heading into the 12th and final event of their home quadrangular, the Firebirds held a one-point lead before their 400 free relay team of Kasey Dunn, Janet Stefanov, Ava Cormaney and Claire Campbell delivered a first-place finish to help close the meet, not only with a race victory, but also a team title.

After FSHS finished with 424 points to the Lions’ 419, Campbell said, as general rule, she tries to avoid scoreboard-watching during competitions. But she was fully aware of the stakes before diving in for her winning leg of the relay.

Lawrence High's Emily Guo competes in the Girls 200 Yard Individual Medley event of a quad on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center.

“It did get back to us,” said Campbell, a senior. “It was more exciting than it was nerve-racking.”

Lawrence’s Morgan Jones, Maddie Dean, Aubrey Fischer and Madi Heckman finished 1.36 seconds behind their FSHS counterparts (3:43.2) in the 400 free relay finale.

“My first 50 felt really good,” Heckman said, “because I was a little bit ahead of (Campbell), but after that turn, she caught up. I was just trying to go as fast as possible to keep up with her.”

LHS led in team points by nine through eight events, and the margin grew to 21 after a victory in the 200 free relay. But FSHS cut its deficit to eight points following a second-place finish by Ainsley Krug in the 100 back, and the team took a one-point edge into the final event after three Firebirds — second-place Cormaney, Payton Krug and Lydia Zicker– finished in the top four of the 100 breast, helping offset a victory by the Lions’ Marian Frick in the race.

“After every single event, we would go over there and watch and it would be really close,” Heckman said. “We’d be a point ahead, or maybe nine points.”

Free State's Lydia Zicker competes in the Girls 200 Yard Individual Medley event of a quad on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center.

LHS took first place in six events: Dean, Frick, Emily Guo and Jamie Abernathy won the 200 medley relay; Guo took the 200 IM and 100 fly; Eden Kingerey triumphed in diving; Frick, Fischer, Guo and Heckman prevailed in the 200 free relay; and Frick finished first in the 100 breast.

FSHS emerged victorious in four races: Campbell won the 200 free and 500 free; Cormaney took first the 100 free; and the Firebirds sealed their points crown with the 400 free relay.

The teams as a whole, as well as Campbell and Heckman individually, have enjoyed the back-and-forth friendly rivalry this spring between the two programs.

“It’s been really fun racing her,” Campbell said of Heckman, who typically swims in the lane next to her for the 400 free relay, “and it’s nice to have that consistency with her. And it’s always nice to see her and congratulate her at the end, no matter what the outcome is.”
