Firebirds win Emporia tennis tourney

Free State senior Ali Dodd and freshman Keegan VanPelt won their fourth tournament of the season in doubles, leading the FSHS girls tennis team to first place at the Emporia Invitational on Saturday.

Dodd and VanPelt, who have only lost two matches all season, posted a 4-0 record and earned an 8-4 win over Blue Valley West’s Andrea Wolff and Gwyn Gifford in the doubles championship match. Gabby Gorman and Anna Peard, Free State’s other doubles pairing, took third place with a 3-1 record.

In singles, junior Kate Piper had a 3-1 record and finished in fifth place. Andie Veeder placed sixth, losing her last match to Piper, 8-2.

The Firebirds will play in the Sunflower League tournament Thursday at Olathe District Activity Center.
