19-year-old suspect to face first-degree murder charge in Motel 6 shooting

Lawrence Police Department officers remained on the scene Sunday morning of the Motel 6 in North Lawrence the scene of a fatal shooting late Saturday night.

A Kansas City, Kan., man has been arrested in connection with a weekend shooting incident where one person was killed and two others were hurt at the Motel 6 in North Lawrence.

Tyrone J. Carvin, 19, is in custody and will be brought to Douglas County to face charges of first-degree murder, aggravated assault and two counts of aggravated battery in connection with the incident, Lawrence police said Tuesday, in a news release.

Carvin himself suffered a gunshot wound “in relation to the shooting” and was treated and released from a Kansas City area hospital, police said in the news release.

Carvin was in the Wyandotte County Jail on Tuesday. He is a Kansas City resident, Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Capt. David Thaxton said.

He did not appear in Douglas County District Court Tuesday.

The shooting took place about 11:30 p.m. Saturday inside a guest room at Motel 6, 1130 N. Third St., Lawrence police Sgt. Amy Rhoads said.

Upon arrival, officers discovered three shooting victims, police said in previous news releases.

One victim, 23-year-old Cameron A. Hooks, of Lenexa, died from his injuries, police said. Two other victims were transported to area hospitals.

Rhoads said Tuesday that the two other victims’ injuries, initially described as possibly life-threatening, were now considered non-life-threatening.

Rhoads declined to share additional details about the incident — including what led to the shootings and whether the people involved knew each other — citing the ongoing investigation.

In Tuesday’s news release, Lawrence police described Carvin as “one of the suspects” in the shooting.

Rhoads declined to share more information about the identity or location of other possible suspects, also citing the ongoing investigation.

“We are not willing to share any details of the investigation at this time,” she said.

Lawrence police urge anyone with information on the shooting to contact the department at 832-7509 or Crime Stoppers of Lawrence and Douglas County at 843-TIPS (8477).
