Temple steps down as Veritas AD

After spending the last three years building up Veritas Christian School’s athletic programs, including starting a baseball team, Brett Temple believes he’s leaving it in a good position to move forward.

Temple announced he was resigning as the school’s athletic director at the end of the school year.

“I feel like we’ve moved in the right direction,” Temple said. “I feel like we’re continuously striving to get to the right spot where we can financially be able to open up the possibilities of having other facilities for our own. Having our home venue, that’s something I worked really hard on.”

Temple, who is taking a job with Adidas as an NCAA coordinator, coached the football team last season and served as an assistant coach for the boys basketball and baseball teams.

The boys basketball team won a KCAA state title in March, while baseball and volleyball teams finished second at state.

“Just really getting our name out there, that was kind of the biggest thing,” Temple said. “Letting people know what we have to offer as far as an athletic program and what strides we’re making.”

When Temple started as the school’s athletic director, he had a five-year plan to make the school a member of the Kansas High School Athletics Association.

Veritas is an approved school, which allows them to schedule KSHSAA-member schools for games, but it doesn’t participate in the state’s postseason tournaments.

Temple said the biggest hurdle is finding the school its own facilities, including the basketball programs, which played last season at the East Lawrence Recreation Center.

“I knew it wasn’t going to happen overnight,” Temple said. “I knew there were a lot of obstacles in the way and a lot of challenges. But I feel like each year, we continuously grew, continuously reached our goals.”

With athletic programs growing, Temple said that was the hardest part of walking away.

Veritas isn’t expected to pick Temple’s successor until later this summer.

“These kids are amazing kids,” Temple said. “They give you everything they’ve got. They are really comfortable. I can’t complain about anything. All the parents are great, just tremendous support and backing.”
