The Friends of Hidden Valley help maintain and preserve Hidden Valley Camp, located at Kasold Drive and Bob Billings Parkway. Volunteers are needed to assist with a trail maintenance work day from 8 to 11 a.m. June 3. Volunteers will work with crew leaders to clear back the encroaching growth along the trails. This workday coincides with National Trails Day, a day to encourage people of all ages to find a trail in their area to either help maintain or hike. The public is invited to enjoy a guided hiking tour from 11:30 am to 1 p.m. Beginning at 11:30 a.m., Trail Guides will lead short half-hour tours and longer one-hour tours covering most of the trail system. Volunteers and guests must sign in, wear appropriate clothing including sturdy, closed-toe shoes, and wear insect repellent. Please no dogs or strollers. To volunteer or for more information, please contact Durand Reiber at durandi@sunflower.com. Rain date is June 4.

The Douglas County Safe Routes to School initiative, called “Be Active Safe Routes,” is a collaborative effort between the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department, Lawrence Public Schools, the City of Lawrence, the Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization and numerous community partners to improve the health and well-being of children by enabling and encouraging them to safely walk and bicycle to school. The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department and the Lawrence Pedestrian Coalition will bring the Safe Routes to School National Partnership to Lawrence to offer a Safe Routes to School Champions training course. Many volunteers are needed to participate in this incredible knowledge and skills-building opportunity. After attending the one-day training on Aug. 29, SRTS Champions will work with one Lawrence or Douglas County elementary or middle school and the adjacent neighborhood to promote safe and healthy activities to help achieve safe routes for all. For more information, please contact Gary Webber at gwebber@sunflower.com or at 312-4840.

Lawrence Memorial Hospital is looking for energetic and customer service oriented people who are willing to be a part of the caring team of healthcare providers. Lend a helpful hand to patients, visitors, fellow volunteers and staff members, by volunteering at the following opportunities. The 4th Street Health Plaza Desk needs volunteers to greet and assist people coming into the building. Volunteers in this area must be excellent customer service representatives and be able to assist people with wheelchairs. Active, upbeat, encouraging volunteers are needed for the Fit Assist exercise program at the main campus, 325 Maine St., and at LMH South, 23rd Street and Kasold Drive. Fit Assist volunteers are “exercise buddies” that lend a hand two to three times a week to someone needing physical assistance with an exercise routine. Volunteers provide positive coaching and feedback to the person they are helping. Hospital staff provide instruction and guidance to volunteers and exercisers. Volunteers are also needed in the LMH Gift Shop to operate the cash register, assist customers, and check in and display merchandise. This is a busy area that requires volunteers to be on their feet and moving around. Volunteers with a pleasant and caring demeanor are needed at the Admissions Desk to assist persons checking in for procedures. Training is provided for all assignments. Various days and shifts are available. For a detailed listing, please go to lmh.org/volunteer-services/opportunities or contact the Volunteer Office at 505-3141 or at Allyson.Leland@LMH.org.

Senior Resource Center for Douglas County provides resources, information, opportunities, and advocacy that enhance the quality of the second half of life. Volunteers are needed to deliver lunchtime meals to homebound seniors in Lawrence and surrounding communities in Douglas County. This is a fantastic opportunity to deliver a hot meal and a smile while making a big difference in the lives of local seniors. Most delivery routes take less than an hour so it is possible to complete a route during your lunch hour. This is a fun and easy way to accrue volunteer hours and get better acquainted with members of your community. Delivery drivers pick up meals between 10:30 and 11:15 a.m. and deliver them to residents before 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Drivers may choose a specific one-day-a-week assignment or may opt for a more flexible schedule. It is also possible to volunteer as a substitute meal delivery driver. Volunteers drive their own vehicles. To help defray gas expenses, reimbursement of $0.45 per mile is offered for miles driven while delivering meals in personal vehicles. For more information and to obtain an application, please contact Senior Meals Coordinator Johnetta Brown at 785-727-7881.
