Texas Tech slammed 15 hits, five for extra bases, and drew five walks to win the opener of a three-game baseball series in Lubbock against Kansas, 10-6.

“They beat our pitching up tonight,” KU coach Ritch Price said. “I will tip my cap to them. That is the best offensive team we faced all year. Their hitters were better than our pitching.”

The loss dropped KU’s Big 12 record to 11-11 with two games, both in Lubbock, remaining on the conference schedule.

Led by Tanner Gregg’s big day at the plate (3-for-4, three RBIs), KU took leads of 3-1 in the second inning and 6-4 in the sixth, but couldn’t cool the hot bats of the Red Raiders. Designated hitter Tanner Gardner was a particularly tough out for the Jayhawks. Gardner hit his first two homers of the season, doubled, scored three runs and drove in four. His two-run home run off of losing pitcher Zack Leban (3-3) was the key blow in Tech’s four-run sixth inning.

Leban, who recorded just one out in relief of shaky starter Jackson Goddard, allowed four earned runs on four hits and a walk. Lefty reliever Blake Weiman allowed two earned runs in two innings.

Kansas had 10 hits, seven against Texas Tech ace Steven Gingery, Big 12 leader in ERA and wins.

“That is as good as we could have swung the bats against Gingery,” Price said.

The second game of the series is scheduled for today at 6:30 p.m.
